WE MEET AGAIN. I rolled a 6, which just seems exactly like the kind of ending we should've had.

[This is so much tl;dr, oh lord.]

It is, without question, a broken, battered galaxy that's survived the Reaper War. The bare facts show billions dead, the Citadel shattered, relays broken, and the combined might of the galaxy's fleets left in orbit around one heavily damaged garden world with a biochemistry incompatible with two of their races.

Some might, and some do, wonder whether the cost of victory was too high. Whether, for all the cycle has come to an end with them, this cycle's civilization is as doomed as the Prothean Empire to fall, to fade, or to crumble into factions, fighting and a new dark age.

The latter is a popular theory with humans versed in the history of the Roman Empire.

But, like the vagrant greenery sprouting amongst the destroyed sections of Earth's great cities, hope remains. Hope grows, edging importunately into the seams and cracks of those bare concrete facts. The galaxy and its people are doing what sapient life does best: they are finding a new way.

The Citadel shattered in that last incomprehensible beam of light as the Crucible fired, but the ring and petals remained largely intact. Teams sent in expecting to do site assessment and body recovery instead found shaken survivors signaling from behind emergency bulkheads. News media reports that the combined efforts of C-Sec and the Citadel Defense Force have saved millions. The asari matriarch Aethyta's quotation was deemed unfit for publication, but Armando Bailey, recovering in hospital from multiple organ replacements, caused a mild stir of amusement when he granted an interview on the condition that the reporter first bring him a dinner of fresh sockeye salmon.

The Sol mass relay may have disintegrated from the force of the beam, but reports from the QECs scattered around the galaxy soon told the larger picture: the beam remained effective at killing reapers across the relay network, but only Sol and those relays next in line were out of commission. The military might of the galaxy was trapped... but not forever, and especially not long once Aethyta, full of snarky I-told-you-so's, took over directing the combined intellectual might of the Crucible Project and pointed them at her formerly mocked pet project of designing their own mass relays. The rebuilt Sol relay is expected to be deployed in a couple months, and after that the galaxy will truly be their own to explore.

In the meantime, the turians and quarians have forged an alliance to maintain the quarian liveships -- heavy losses of personnel to both sides have left them capable of supporting both species needs. The geth, having suffered a hard system crash in the wake of the beam, have come back online and are to be found everywhere in the Sol system. Many are serving as support and partnership for quarians, but many is the repair or rescue or even hospital team that's been surprised by the arrival of a geth platform. The consensus of the geth is that many wish to explore organic society as individuals and return to the concensus with individual knowledge to share. Individuality is a new concept, but they will integrate it when sufficient data is compiled.

Earth is being rebuilt. The dead reapers are being scavenged, melted down, resmelted and repurposed to destroy any last lingering threat of indoctrination. Their massive eezo cores are providing ample resources for the Phoenix Project's relay building. The husks and the other revanents, without an overmind to guide them, are slowly fading out or quickly being cornered and cleaned up.

And, as much a symbol of the rebuilding and reconstruction as she was of the war itself, the battered and bloody but still breathing body of Commander Shepard was retrieved from the rubble of the Presidium ring by the combined stubbornness of her crew (And the sensors and similar stubbornness of her ship.) She's been unconscious in an undisclosed location for months, with no visitors permitted but regular bulletins given out regarding her progress.

Of course, when you're humanity's second Spectre and one of your best friends happens to be the Shadow Broker, the 'no visitors' rule gets a little flexible. (The same thing happens when you're second in command to the Primarch, a quarian fleet Admiral, a krogan ruler or the Shadow Broker herself.) Thus, when the word comes that Shepard is due to be brought out of her medical coma, Kaidan's among the crew that drops what they're doing to turn up. They've compromised with the doctors by standing watches rather than all crowding in, and it's his turn to sit in the chair beside her bed, more grey in his temples than there was even a couple months ago, and a cane hooked over the arm speaking to his own rounds with the physiotherapists.

There's a window in this room -- they made sure of that. It's not sunshine as it ought to be, but even the grey and rainy sky and seascape reveals a Vancouver that's rebuilding itself into the city of light and glass it was before and will be again.

Harry finds himself standing at Nate's door before long, and considers knocking. No -- he shouldn't be here. He's dead, right? Dead man walking, for a few months now. It'd be better if he just left.

...he hasn't got anywhere left to go. And after everything went to hell, after the way things blew up in his face (quite literally, ha), he's thinking that maybe -- just maybe -- he should try it the hero way. Heroes knock, right? They apologize.
