[The arguments are to be expected. Luke replies calmly and patiently.]

My father was missing almost the exact same limbs you are and yet he was one of the most powerful Force users in the galaxy. I don't imagine you'd want to be compared to him but all I'm saying is that you shouldn't use that as a gauge for your abilities.

And not everyone with Force abilities becomes a Jedi. In fact, most never do. Some live their entire lives never knowing about their powers. That Jedi I found with your name was probably the last one in your lineage.

Besides, [he allows himself a little smirk] ever wonder why you're so good at sabacc, a game of chance?

[No, Hobbie isn't overly inclined to feeling particularly honored by the comparison, even if he realizes that Luke's perspective on his father is rather different from just about every other person in the galaxy. So he can't quite keep the slight twist of distaste off his lips at that, sorry Luke.]

I just thought it was all charm and good luck. [He says, dryly.]

[Dry humor and sarcasm are to be expected around Hobbie but Luke is a little concerned that he doesn't seem to be taking this seriously. He stops walking and turns to face him, keeping his expression and mannerisms firm but calm.]

While it's true that you wouldn't be as strong as you could have been due to the high percentage of your natural body that you're missing, you're still plenty strong enough to become a fully-fledged Jedi if you wanted to.

Now, I don't want you to feel obligated to make a decision one way or another or to even consider a decision at this point. I only want you to understand and accept that this is real, what I'm telling you is true... and I would recommend taking some time to come to terms with that.

[Hobbie sighs and scrubs a hand through his hair.] Okay, Luke, let's say I believe you... [Luke doesn't lie, after all, and if this isn't a joke, then there has to be some truth to it.] ...I'm still not sure why you'd want me.

And that's not some false modesty thing. I meant it when I said I'm not like you. You're a far better man than I could ever hope to be.

[He is, after all, in the business of killing people, if you think about it.]

[This new avenue makes Luke furrow his brows and tilt his head in confusion. He honest to goodness has no idea where Hobbie is getting this from. He's never mentioned such a thing before and Luke is a bit gobsmacked. In fact, he's almost upset that Hobbie thinks that about himself.]

What in the galaxy ever gave you that idea?

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2015-05-20 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
[he raises his eyebrows] Come on, Luke. You are the best man I know. That's a lot to live up to.
last_ofthe_jedi: (rotj: i'll say this once)

[Luke's features smooth over a bit but he doesn't look satisfied by that answer, just embarrassed.] Here I was hoping you'd mention some horrible thing you did once and I'd smooth it over with a pep talk.

[He sighs softly and decides to try a new angle.] Hobbie, you and I are both in situations where we often have to make the hard decisions. We have to take care of the dirty work that no one else wants. We protect people, and sometimes that requires doing things that might make us murderers or criminals in the eyes of those who are ignorant to the way things work behind the scenes.

We had to do things like that for the rebellion and I can promise you that being a Jedi doesn't make that all better. In fact, I've found that it gets worse. If you truly believe I'm a better person we'll have to compare headcounts sometime.

We do those things so that other people can live in peace and ignorant bliss if they so choose.

[He smirks softly.] So forgive me if I still have no idea what you're talking about.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2015-05-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
[He can't quite suppress a crooked smile at that.]

You have a point. [After all, if one counted the first Death Star, it'd be hard for anyone to 'catch up' that headcount. Except maybe Wedge. It doesn't really change Hobbie's opinion of Luke, though. Maybe it's just something about all the Force meditation that makes Luke seem so...settled. Or something.]

I'll think about it, okay?

[Luke shakes his head.]

Don't think about any offer I might give you. Think about what you want, but also consider that there are other ways you can use your abilities without committing to the path of the Jedi. Learning to use the Force can come in handy for just about anyone. It would make you a better pilot, a better fighter, possibly even better with people.

[Luke can't help a small grin. Nobody in Rogue Squadron is exactly known for their social etiquette and prowess except for maybe Tycho. Even Luke admits that he's become far easier to talk to ever since he learned to be more patient and control his emotions.]

Though, I also want you to keep in mind that you're a better candidate than you think you are. Becoming a Jedi requires years of training and sacrifice and the fact that you're a rebel veteran means you're already halfway there. Being a longtime friend of the teacher can't hurt either. [Not that Luke plays favorites, it just helps to know his students so well ahead of time.]

Oh and– [his smile fades and he glances to the side as his voice lowers] don't take this the wrong way but I'd be lying I said I wasn't desperate at this point. [Honesty at its finest.]

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2015-05-20 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Way to make a guy feel wanted... [It's said lightly, though.]

Having a hard time finding candidates?

[Then again, considering what happened to the last Jedi Order, it might be understandable if people were a little hesitant to sign on with Luke. That and his reputation was a little larger than life. All sorts of stories got around about him and the holodrama producers seemed to be on overdrive.]

[Luke briefly raises his eyebrows in emphasis.] No, actually I have no problem at all finding them, it's keeping them alive once I've found them that seems to be the trouble.

[He pauses and glances at Hobbie apprehensively, realizing that probably sounded terrible.] Though I don't think you have anything to worry about. You already tried to die about fifty times under my watch and you were never quite successful. [Luke starts laughing.] One more check in your favor for being a good candidate.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2015-05-20 11:42 am (UTC)(link)

[Hobbie snorts.] We have got to get you salesmanship lessons.
