God, it really hasn't. Still, it would be nice...Anakin has a mini heart attack as Tahiri peers around the corner, reflexively reaching out to grip her arm and haul her back even as she ducks down. ]

We can, but we're supposed to avoid casualties. It would be best if we could escape them. [ Options, options... ] How do you feel about vents?

Don't worry, this is an au where neither of these losers die.

Grumbles about "avoiding casualties". Even if she doesn't necessarily disagree. Much. ] Vents...? [ pause. sigh. ] Better than stairs.

[ Tahiri earns a wry grin. ]

Vents. Look at it this way: when my parents met, Mom suggested a garbage chute. [ As he's been talking, he's been getting out his multitool, getting closer to the wall to start prying the vent open. He could saber it, but if they do it right, maybe they can confuse the enemy about where they got to... ]

Can you deflect the blaster bolts for me for a bit? [ With her saber. ] Maybe try to hit the door control panel. If we can slow them down, we can disappear without anyone being the wiser. ...Hopefully.

Well, if it's between vents and a garbage chute, I'll take vents.

[ Tahiri moves to use her lightsaber to deflect blaster bolts while he gets fancy with his multitool. ] Try to hurry before it's our heads that are deflecting these bolts instead of my lightsaber.

[ She does manage to deflect one at the door control panel, so score 2 pts for team jedi. ]

Then I'm already doing better than Mom.

[ Assuming they make it out of this alive. But Tahiri was right: they can take the annoyed guards currently trying to get at them. They just can't do it without seriously disappointing Master Skywalker. So vents it is.

He hears the door slam shut and pops the vent as it does so, pushing it aside and gesturing for Tahiri to go first. ]

I'll close it up behind us.

Tahiri needs no more urging than that, hurrying into the vent after shutting off her lightsaber. She only goes far enough so that Anakin can get in behind her and close it up. ]

[ Now he's getting flustered, so Anakin will just trail off and climb in, carefully pulling the vent shut behind them. He goes quiet for a purpose after he's in; while he couldn't screw the vent in place with his hands, he just has to focus...

Really? How did theirs go? Hey, how long did it take them to get married after they met, anyway? I bet they had a really nice wedding, right? I've never been to a wedding. I mean, back on Tatooine there were marriages but I bet they're a lot different than anywhere else.

[ What's more useful for focusing than your girlfriend asking about your parents' marriage and talking weddings. ]

[ Tahiri. Tahiri, no. This is the opposite of helping. Nor is this the time or place to talk about his parents' wedding. ]

Shhh. [ He doesn't know if she's going to comply or not, but he has to tune her out for a second. It's important to cover their escape and get a move on before the guards deal with the door; with a moment or two of intense concentration, Anakin pulls back from the vent. ]

All right, let's go. That way should lead us towards the shuttle bay.

[ Waits to see if that shocks him out of his silence and ignoring her, and pouts when it doesn't. Then she pauses, listening. ] Do you hear that? There's a weird-- Anakin, you're still not listening to me, are you.

[ When he does turn back to her, she glares. Good job, Anakin. ]

[ Hey, completely failing at girls/friends is what he does sometimes. Anakin winces at the expression on Tahiri's face. ]

What? [ What did he do? Emperor's black bones, he's never going to understand Tahiri entirely, even if he knows her better than anyone else alive. ]

We need to hurry before they catch on. [ Let's...let's just leave the whole "Tahiri is pissed off at me for some reason" until after they are out of this damn place. ]

Did you hear a thing I said? Obviously not, honestly, Anakin you're unbelievable sometimes... I asked you if you heard anything weird, like a weird noise. [ And why he was so bad at multitasking / if they'd get married but there are more pressing things right now. ] Luckily we weren't attacked while you were ignoring me completely!

It's a little hard to do something when you can't see what you're doing while also carrying on a conversation, Tahiri. [ Please cut him some slack!!! ]

I didn't hear anything. But if there's anything that might attack us, that's even more reason to hurry, isn't it? We're already going to be late for the rendezvous.

[ He's using his let's be reasonable tone for all the good he thinks it'll do...a pause. ]

Grumbles, but begins crawling through the vent. She agrees that they should probably hurry. ]

Like a-- [ there's a click-clacking noise, like fingernails on plasteel, in the distance. ] Like that, did you hear it this time?

Blaster bolts! [ It's the most audible of the curses that quickly follow it, less family-friendly in nature and all cribbed from his father. ]

Tahiri, hurry! They've got a security droid in here. [ And they haven't got room to turn on their sabers. ]

[ Cursing, Tahiri does start moving her butt in a more hurried fashion. ] See, this is why you need to learn how to multitask!

How close is it to us, can we outcrawl it? [ Damn vents, maybe stairs or a garbage chute would have been an improvement. ]

How would our situation be improved if we'd left the vent open? Then we'd have guards and a droid! [ Kids, this is no time to argue...

At least he'd had her go in first. That puts him solidly between her and the droid, and as he scrabbles onward, Anakin casts out his senses behind them. The guards behind the door, probably close to breaking it down, and...there. ] It'll catch up if we just go straight. We need to get out of the way...as long as we go out onto another floor, we'll give these particular guards the slip, and just have to avoid, you know. All the other people who want to kill us.

[ THEY'RE GONNA GET SUCH HIGH MARKS ON STEALTH yeah no they're going to get scolded. ]

[ He's going to practice this whole opening things with the Force later. It's not that he couldn't shove it out and have done with it, but that would be an obvious sign they'd been this way. If he just gets the bolts out - and there we go, then just push the vent aside on a hinge and drop down to the floor below...

Anakin grabs the bolts out of the air where he held them in his mind, waiting for Tahiri to come down before he handles putting the vent back together again, as quickly as he can. ]

All right, but again I recommend multitasking... not that you're listening anyway...

[ But she does listen, then once he drops down she'll follow him. She stays on alert, in case anyone accidentally happens on the two escaping Jedi and decides to attack. ] Hurry up... [ Encouraging. ]

[ He trusted you to do the listening part, Tahiri! And indeed, it only takes a few seconds more to re-secure the vent, after which Anakin glances around. He'd already checked before dropping down that there weren't any life forms in the immediate area... ]

All right, we may need to scrap the shuttle bay idea and just get out of the compound. Chances are it's on higher security than expected...I might be able to disable it at the right access port, but the less time we spend here, the less chance we'll be caught. We already have the information we came for, anyway.
