The 'We're Stranded' Meme

THE ‘WE’RE STRANDED’ MEME

You’re stranded it’s as simple as that. Maybe you were on your way to a nice relaxing holiday, a business trip or maybe you were just on your way home. Whatever the case, it doesn’t look like you’re going to be reaching your destination any time soon. You’re stuck and all you can do is to try and survive until help arrives. If help ever does arrive. Well, at least you’re not alone. No, there’s someone here stranded with you. Maybe you know them, maybe they’re a complete stranger or maybe they were stranded here long before you. Whoever they are you’re going to have to work together to get out of this mess.

What you do to survive and what happens to you is up to you. Do you search for food, do you try and find any signs of human life, do you have a run in with the locals or the local wildlife or do you just close your eyes and hope someone finds you. Whatever happens good luck.

WHERE ARE YOU STRANDED?

On an island – You’re stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere. There’s no phone or radio signal and there are no signs of life (that you can see). It could be a huge island with a dense forest in the center or it could be a small, sandy island with sparse vegetation cover. It’s up to you.
In the jungle – One minute you’re making your way along a jungle trail and the next minute you’re completely lost. You have no idea where you are, you have no idea which way to go and all you can see around you is trees and more trees. Have fun in the jungle. Look out for the wildlife and any local tribes
In space – The sci-fi option. For some reason you were in space. Maybe you’re inside a ship stranded in the middle of nowhere or stranded in the middle of some kind of asteroid field. Or maybe you were outside of your space shuttle and now you’re stranded with no way to return. Let’s hope your oxygen supply doesn’t run out
Open Water – Maybe you were simply out for a swim and the current was too strong, pulling you out to sea. Maybe you were diving and after resurfacing you’ve realized you have absolutely no idea which way is land and your boat is nowhere to be seen. Or maybe it’s a Titanic-type situation and your ship has sunk. Better get your life jacket ready.
High in the air – Maybe you’re trapped in a ski lift high above the ground just like the movie Frozen. Maybe you were on a roller-coaster or a Ferris wheel and the rides malfunctioned. Or maybe you’re just stuck at the top of a really, really high mountain or cliff. Whatever the situation you better not be afraid of heights!
Inside an elevator - This one is pretty self-explanatory. You were in an elevator, the elevator stopped and now you’re stranded inside the small space, probably with a bunch of people you don’t know until help arrives.
A cave – Maybe you had planned to explore the cave system or maybe it was a spontaneous event but you went inside and now you’re stranded with no way out.
The middle of nowhere – This can cover any landscape really: a mountainous area, a desert, the middle of the countryside, a tundra area. Whatever the landscape there’s no signs of human life anywhere. You’re stranded.
Wild Card! – Don’t like any of the options given? Come up with your own scenario!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Extreme weather! - You're caught in a blizzard or a thunderstorm.
Searching for food/supplies!
Setting up a camp/shelter from the rain
Coming into contact with (possibly dangerous) locals/local wildlife
Calling for help
Trying to find a place with better signal
Just generally freaking out
Trying to come up with a plan
An obligatory smut option
Wild Card! – There are so many options and so many things you could do in this situation. Use your imagination!

[Actually he could probably survive in space. At least for a little while. Certainly longer than a human. But it's a moot point since they both need to survive.]

It has been a long while since I traveled the galaxy by ship. Bifrost is faster and more convenient, but we of Asgard take it for granted.

[Something shiny and red catches his eye. It's a ship that looks fairly whole He points it out to Peter and makes his way towards it.]

It certainly would have been useful to have a ship or two when the bridge was broken.

Bifrost is the big teleporter thingy you've guys got, right?

[ He follows close behind, then moves to inspect the ship. The hull looks mostly intact, which is a good sign. Better a sturdy shell than a broken one; the machinery can be patched together from the wreckage of the other ships. ]

Gotta wonder why they even have a ship graveyard like this. Past visitors, maybe?

That is correct. Unfortunately I have been unable to contact the Gatekeeper to retrieve us.

[Thor ponders Peter's question as he moves inside the ship. There's more damage here, with some components burned and broken, or missing entirely.]

I suppose this could be where they discard the ships of their other victims.

[He drops the bundle of fried wiring he was inspecting and sighs.]

I suspect this may be the best we can do. It's something to start with at least.

[ It's a lucky thing the ship itself is relatively small -- not unlike the Milano, in terms of layout. He immediately seeks out the engines to check out the damage there and lets out a low whistle. ]

Damn. This must've been a fast little ship when it was, you know, workin'.

[ He ducks beneath the casing. ]

This thing's been through hell, though. Rusted up like nothing, for one. Wires are all corroded, for another. The whole thing's gonna need replacing.

Failing that, we could just take out the supporting bars and use them like clubs and keep wandering the wastelands like Mad Max.

Mad Max? Who is that?

[He gets the gist of it even if he didn't get the reference. Should they continue to explore? Or should they work towards leaving the planet?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. There is also survival to consider. They haven't seen a speck of life yet. At some point they will need to eat.]

Some dude who lived in a post-apocalyptic world. Don't worry about it.

[ And that's how Peter got eaten by Thor, son of Odin.

Luckily, those dark little thoughts haven't occurred to one Peter Quill, son of ???, who prefers to think in the here and the now. Worry about the big stuff when you absolutely have to. Right now, he sees an old engine in need of replacing or weapons in need of making, and he knows which the easier job would be. ]

It'd wouldn't be a longterm solution, but I can probably manage some really rudimentary blasters from the scraps around here. Probably wouldn't last longer than a dozen shots, but after that you can just punch dudes. Assuming there are any dudes to be found. They're hidin' themselves pretty well.

[Luckily for Peter, Thor has no desire to find out what Terran tastes like.

He nods at the suggestion.]

Defense first, escape second. And if our kidnappers do return, we can just take their ship from them and use it ourselves.

I like you. [ He says it as he's ducking down, rescuing some piece or other from the spent engine. ] You're practical.

Also, just a heads up that I'll probably be duckin' behind you most of the time, if and when the fighting starts up. I know how you Asgardians like to brawl.

[Thor chuckles and starts opening hatches, looking for any leftover supplies.]

Understandable. You Midgardians are so fragile.

Aha!

[He locates what must have been a weapons locker. All the energy weapons are gone, but someone left a sword. And there are only a few rust spots. He gives it a few practice swings.]

This will be useful.

[ -- Peter will never understand how or why it is that these aliens keep picking up bladed weapons when they have so many awesome guns available. Still, he knows better than to question it. ]

Is it even still sharp?

[Thor runs his finger along the edge to test it.]

Sharp enough, and better than nothing.

Have you found anything worth salvaging or should we range farther afield?

[ Mimicking Thor's tone, ] Farther afield, I think.

[ And then back to his own voice, ] The hull and bulkhead's in good enough shape, but anything in here is long past bein' useful.

Very well.

[Out of that ship and on to the next?]

If we can find what you need, how long do you think it will take to put together something we can fly?

[ He pauses, licking the front of his teeth, then, ]

You want the truth or a convenient lie?

[Thor doesn't even hesitate.]

The truth.

[And he can guess it's not good news just from the question.]

[ He puffs out a breath. ]

If we cobble together some parts in good condition and if we luck out and the parts are compatible without any finagling? Couple of days.

If the opposite of all of that? Much longer.

[The answer doesn't seem to surprise or worry him.]

Then we plan for "much longer", just in case. If we are lucky, we may be able to find supplies abandoned in these ships.

Fingers crossed that the supplies are stuff either of us can actually eat.

[ In a pile of wreckage, he shifts aside debris to pull out a blaster. It reminds Peter of an Uzi, almost, with a long, narrow attachment on the barrel. A silencer, maybe? A quick inspection shows the damage isn't too terrible; he can probably fix it with relative ease. ]

Now I have a gun. Ho, ho, ho.

[Peter has good timing, because just then there is the unmistakable sound of a ship's engines. Thor looks up as a small star ship drops down into the atmosphere and flies over them. It starts its descent on the other side of the hill, back the way they came.]

I think you may have a chance to use it. I have a feeling that ship may be looking for us.

[He grips the hilt of his borrowed sword tighter.]

[ -- Ah, dammit, there's still some work that needs to be done on the blaster before it's completely battle-worthy. He'll have to make do with 60% efficiency.

He stands to peer at the ship -- he doesn't recognize the make, which is concerning. After that, he hits the trigger behind his ear, and his helmet unfolds in blue light around his head. ]

What do you think -- ugly and monstrous as all hell or basic humanoids?

My money's on scary and fangy.

Perhaps it will be both?

[He nods in approval of Peter's helmet, then starts running back towards the hill.]

There is only one way to find out!

[He's smiling as he runs, happy at a chance for action. As his brother once noted, Thor is partial to punching his way out of any situation.]

[ Of course the guy would run first, ask questions later.

Of course. Very Drax-ish.

Peter sighs heavily before following after him, making whatever on-the-fly minor adjustments to the blaster that he can. He's not going to be much help if every shot goes wide, after all. ]

[Thor is almost at the top of the hill when it occurs to him that he's probably running into a fire fight against energy weapons and he doesn't have Mjolnir to block the blasts for him. So instead of charging over the hill like he normally would, he actually slows down and drops flat at the top of the hill to survey the situation before rushing in.

The ship has landed about half way between where they are now and where they initially met. Thor waits for Peter to catch up.]

No one has come out yet. Is the ship familiar to you? I have not seen one like it.

[ Good sense? From an Asgardian?!

Peter never thought he'd see the day.

But as it is, when he sees Thor drop down, Peter has the good sense to crouch as he draws near, dropping down to a prone position as well. ]

Looks kinda like a hodgepodge, doesn't it? Krylorian, bit of Badoon, bit of Galadorian. Best guess? They took a look at the best pieces from their visitors, cobbled it together.

Scavenger race, maybe?

That would fit with their collection of wrecked ships back there. They have most likely taken all the best parts.

[He looks over the terrain again, but there still isn't much cover. If he can get in close, he can take away the advantage of the energy weapons.]

We should try to get in closer before they emerge. Did you get the weapon working?
