I have loved you for a thousand years...

Some say that if a pair of lovers die together in tragedy, they will get another chance when they are reborn. Even if the two of you keep losing each other, you'll get to meet again.

This meme is that meeting. For the first time? For the hundredth time? That much isn't clear. What is clear is that on this, your seeming first meeting -

Everything rushes back to you. Memories, emotion, and all the comes with it...including the memory of how you two died. Overwhelming, isn't it? Some people find it hard to accept, for good reason. What will you do? You can't just bring it up, they'll think you're crazy! Maybe you don't want to bring it up, as you refuse to believe it yourself. And even if you do believe it, that doesn't mean you have to embrace it. You're your own person, after all. You refuse to love someone merely because of who you were in the past.

Or maybe you can't help but let these feelings rise to the surface because they're too strong. No matter what, you can't repress it. In fact, the more you two meet and spend time together, the more you find yourself falling back into the old roles...and making the old mistakes. That isn't good, though; there's one more thing. One of you, when you first met, had a vision about how the two of you would die this time.

You can't let that happen. Not again.

Play that the characters have known each other for a while, are trying to have a relationship while trying to be their own unique selves, not having a relationship because THE PAST DOESN'T DEFINE ME, or even trying to avoid death in an adventurous fashion!

[ The first time Sam met Clint Barton, he ran from him.

Not literally, not really. It's just - it was in the middle of a battle. Sam isn't officially an Avenger, but he's got the gear and he's on the mailing list, and when shit goes down while he and Steve are taking a pit stop in New York, of course he's there to help.

Then he runs into Hawkeye, swooping in to catch him as he falls, and shit gets even worse. Honestly, Sam thinks he's having a flashback. A really, really fucked up flashback, but he's felt this kind of distorted reality before, where he doesn't understand what's real and what isn't, where he can't tell what's a memory and what's going on right now. He doesn't understand where Barton comes in and why he wants to either burst into tears or hold him close and never let go.

Or why he's suddenly got memories of Barton dying, in more than one way, in vivid technicolor and surround sound and in one of them Sam's right there along with him, but that just makes him think flashback more. Once he's got enough distance to think about it, anyway. He's confusing him with Riley, maybe Sam wasn't ready for a battle like this, wasn't ready to watch a teammate go freefalling after getting shot.

He isn't sure that makes sense, especially since even after the battle's over and he's not trapped in pseudo memories, he still feels everything. The only thing he knows for certain is that he is absolutely head over heels in love with Clint Barton, and he has seen him die more times than he can handle.

(One time is more than he can handle, let alone two.)

So Sam doesn't handle it. He leaves, and it's only after the battle's over, after Sam'd hightailed it away with, well, pretty much no excuse at all, after he and Steve had left town again to pick up the trail on Barnes, that he wonders if maybe Barton had experienced anything similar.

He's too scared to find out. He doesn't even tell Steve, until one night when he just missed Barton too goddamn much he lets some things slip.

And somehow, a few days later, they're making a pit stop in New York again. Sam can't even bring himself to be mad, not with the way his heart picks up at the idea of seeing Barton again.

Steve disappears somewhere the second that they see that Barton's in the lounge area of the tower, and suddenly Sam's finding it a little hard to breathe. ]

...hey.
