[ Alex always hated it when someone new would get hired on at Adult World. The thing was, he was the manager, so it was his job to train them and sometimes he made a bad call with his snap judgments; sometimes the people he thought would do really well ended up being a waste of time. Amy had been. He'd liked her, too, and he felt so stupid afterward because she'd pissed it all away, wasting all of her time getting paid to write shitty fucking poetry and let random people shoplift because she couldn't be bothered to even notice there was anyone else in the store with her.
So when Amy quit, Alex hadn't wasted any time with the red tape of asking Stan and Mary Anne before hiring the very next person who asked — he put up a Help Wanted sign in the door and, even though it was after dark, not an hour later, Laura had shown up, walking in with the sign in her hand and something that resembled hope in her eyes. He'd said he had to clear it with them first, but she was unofficially hired. Alex had excused himself to Stan and Mary Anne's office and called them at home, explaining the situation. He'd been working for them for years and they said that they trusted his judgment. Alex wasn't so sure that was a great idea, but they needed the help and why should they wait for weeks to pass before someone else came in like they'd had to when Amy had arrived to begin with? So...Alex hired Laura officially. She'd started the very next day.
Laura was pretty, but she was the unattainable kind of pretty and Alex was still wrapped up in Amy for the first God knows how long that Laura had worked there. He'd hated Amy for slamming his pride; for putting down Stan and Mary Anne the way that he had, but he still couldn't make himself hate her enough to stop thinking about her. Time passed, he finished training Laura and they got along really well. Even Rubia liked her and she hadn't had to warm up to Laura the way she'd had to with Amy. Rubia had liked Laura from the start. That, to Alex, was a good sign. Alex liked having Laura around. She made coming to work more fun.
He's due in at two today but this morning, he finished the painting he'd been working on and decided, fuck it, might as well go in. He knew Laura would be there and at least she'd make the time pass more quickly. When he walks in, he sees her just barely in his line of sight, reaching for a box in the store room and it looks like she's talking to someone. Probably Stan. Alex shucks off his coat and pulls his hoodie up over his head because it's cold as a motherfucker outside, but it's hot as the Devil's asshole inside, because the furnace is busted and Stan and Mary Anne have been trying to get an appointment with the guy who fixes that shit for over a week.
The crashing sounds he hears makes him jump a little and he manages to get the hoodie off just in time to see Laura standing frozen in place with a box and at least a dozen dildos on the floor. His mouth flattens out in a line with dimpled cheeks indicating that he's trying really hard not to laugh, because to be honest, it's a little funny, when she says simply Ow.]
