There's no loyalty like that of a pet.

>> premise
Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a conscientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapiens. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?
As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

With that said, thank you and welcome to your first day as a pet's master!

>> how to play
Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules
Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!
Comment to others.
Play out the scene.

>> prompts
This by now means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Pregnancy: So, about that whole "hybrid" thing. It maaaay be more true than you think, even if pet/human pregnancies are the stuff of salacious tabloids.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

[ Can be played as either, but if Peter's the pet, he's going to be a bird with blue and gold plumage along his back and arms + talons/claws. He's moody and not liable to follow any orders - he's probably the type of pet that takes a dominant role over his master. ]

[As an owner a laid back owner that will be strict if she feels the situation needs it. She will love to tease her pet and might tease some more if she finds the reaction cute.

As a pet a black cat that loves to rub up along her master. She mostly keeps to herself due to her past, but when you get to know her she's a very loyal pet who will defend her master.

I have a handy kink list here

[ As a pet Yamamoto will be an excitable dog - an akita to be exact - who loves to play games with his owner. As an owner he'll be super affectionate and loving. I'd love to pair him up with an older pet, either an ex-stray of an old family pet - but pets his own age are fine too! [ That sounds perfect. Yamamoto will pour all his affection onto his big lovely panther, no matter how much Gieve insists he'd prefer a girl master. I love the idea of it being a temporary thing, like for protection, but Yamamoto just keeps buying more pet toys and treats and spending so much time with Gieve that he's basically decided they'll be (a stupid, young and dorky) master and his older sexy pet. Poor Gieve gets little say in the matter. ]

[ So sweet of you, Yamamoto. Your niceness is getting exploited by a conman. Except he'll wonder how it'll go when he wants/needs to leave. He's no good with permanent things, so that would be a troublesome an interesting master to have. Would you like me to start or would you like to start? ]

[personal profile] baseballer 2015-04-22 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[ I'd like you to start. Also, wouldn't it be oh so nice if Yamamoto bought a collar for his pet, clipped it on without asking, and it turns out to be specially made so it can only be removed by humans? Because sure, he'd laugh it off all teasing like, but it'd still be a genuine show of ownership. ]

[ Sure, that would be so very nice. And very annoying for Gieve. Hope this works for you; ]

Gieve likes windows, because they let him see the world outside the room or house he's in. It's a good way to keep an eye on who comes and goes, and to tell if danger is approaching. Looking out windows has saved his life more than once. Plus, he likes the big outside world, with all its wonders and many things to see and even more things to steal. Granted, it has gotten him into trouble sometimes, but he has not judged any of those instances as more trouble than whatever treasure he has taken is worth this far. Watching from a window rather than being outside, on an evening like this, though, makes him glad he has a place to use for cover. He has taken refuge as a person's pet before, but not someone quite so young or... male. Or energetic. Almost too energetic.

From his perch in a window on the second floor, Gieve has good view of the road, but is fairly invisible from the outside, thanks to the curtain that is partly hiding him. He secretly makes it a point to avoid being seen by people passing by, because you never know who might be connected to whoever is looking for him this time.

He keeps his gaze on the rain-wet asphalt and watches for shadows hiding outside of the light from windows and lamp posts, tail twitching slightly as he sees someone approach, and ears moving toward any sounds they might catch. But he's focused more on what's on the other side of the glass, and not as much on what is on the same side of it. The people living in this house is somewhere, but it doesn't really matter, since he doesn't care much for them. They're just a means to an end, and nothing else.

It's impossible for Yamamoto not to care about another person. Friends, strangers and even enemies find themselves on his good side far more often than his bad, in part because of his overpowering friendliness and optimism. Which goes a long way to explain why he can't leave the cat alone. Rather than see Gieve as a suspicious creature - unowned pets over 25 rarely attract positive attention - Yamamoto found himself enchanted from the moment they met.

He creeps along the hallways of his own home, bare feet barely padding against the ground, using every inch of his (secret) assassination training to approach without being discovered. Because he has a wonderful surprise to share.

"You sure love looking outside," Yamamoto whispers into the big cat's ears when he's close enough. The heat radiates from the beautiful animal's body; hugging him on cold nights has become something of a habit, and they've only been together for a short time. Still, it's been long enough to give Yamamoto ideas. He slides one arm around Gieve's body and pulls him in for a loose hug, his free hand reaching into the pocket of his hoodie to draw out the surprise. All he needs is to create a distraction. The smile on his face comes through in his words, "Ah, maybe you're desperate to go pee?"

Turning the conversation to something embarrassing provides enough cover. Those slender fingers of his work fast while he talks, looping the soft end of a collar through the metal clasp and feeding it along, making sure it won't be too tight when he seals it shut. Which he does in an instant. A silver bell hangs from the front of the collar, one that'll jingle playfully whenever Gieve moves. But there's more than that - a metal disc which reads if you find me, please call followed by Yamamoto's cellphone number also hangs from the collar.

"I bought you a collar," he says with the most carefree laugh, taking a couple steps back to see how it looks. The run of blue material is beautiful, complimented by Gieve's natural charm. The silver catches the light quite nicely. But the best part is the clasp itself; Yamamoto doesn't know how, he didn't listen to the explanation at the pet store, but pets are unable to remove their collars. Probably a security thing. Only a human can unfasten the collar, and even then it must be the human who put the collar on in the first place. No way he's explaining that just yet though. "Check it out in the mirror!"

He points - energetically, of course - to the mirror hanging on the wall.

Some cats had a reputation for being cool, and aloof, but not Blair. Blair was the epitome of a social butterfly, and her eagerness to please was almost more like a puppy than a feline. But she was definitely cat. Ears. Tail. Sharp claws. And don't get her started on catnip, or balls of yarn.

But the thing was, most of her classmates at her old school had been a little put off by her friendliness. She didn't really understand humans' need for personal space. Or modesty. So she didn't really fit in, or have a lot of friends.

Until she met Stiles.

Stiles has kind of always been a dog person. He always wanted a dog and, as soon as he was old enough that his dad couldn't bitch about it, Stiles had gone to the shelter looking for one. The problem was that...there weren't any available. The four that were still there were reserved. Stiles couldn't afford to go to the pet store to buy a purebred at full price; he could, however, afford the adoption fee at the shelter. So to say that he was disappointed in the lack of canine availability would've been a gross understatement. He'd been, in fact, ready to leave the shelter all together when one of the volunteers working there had stopped him. Wait, she'd said, because she was certain she had a cat he'd like. He'd told her that no, he didn't want a cat; cats were too aloof and he didn't like their attitudes, but the volunteer asked Stiles to give Blair a chance, just for a couple of minutes, and she promised he'd see that Blair was perfect. She'd "be like having a dog you never have to walk," the volunteer had boasted. Blair was independent enough that she could do things on her own, Stiles was promised, but she had the general demeanor of a dog: excitable and sociable.

He hadn't been disappointed when he'd given her the chance. Stiles took Blair home and learned quickly that they got along pretty damned well.

He'd probably had her for near a year, now, and it was like having a live-in best friend. ...a really hot one who had no idea she was hot and oh God, why? Why? Of course Stiles would be the one to blur lines with a pet person. He tried to be more careful about keeping her at an arm's length when he figured it out. And this is why I wanted a male dog...how the hell I ended up with a hot female cat is beyond me, but this is why I wanted a male dog, he told himself miserably day in and day out. He just needed to get his shit together, that was all. No big deal, he could totally do that, right? He could.
pumpumpumpkin: (human pb: kat dennings)

[personal profile] pumpumpumpkin 2015-04-23 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Blair had been ecstatic when Stiles had decided to take her home. She wouldn't have complained if he had wanted to take her on long walks--as long as he didn't try to make her wear a leash--but she was equally happy to lounge around on the couch, watching movies, playing video games. She'd even help him with his homework, if it meant he'd pay attention to her. Sure, her motives were maybe a little bit selfish, but she always gave as good as she got.

And then he started acting funny. Blushing a lot, and sitting on the other end of the sofa. Shutting doors that he used to forget to keep closed. That sort of thing. So, Blair was confused. She knew that he liked her, she could sense it in this body temperature, taste it in his scent. But he seemed so uncomfortable sometimes, she wasn't sure what had gone wrong.

"Are you mad at me, Stiles?" she asked, one day when she couldn't stand to wonder any longer. "Was it something I did?"
companero: (ι've вeen lyιng ғor мy wнole lιғe)

Blair's question caught Stiles off guard and he looked over at her where she was sitting on the other end of the couch, eyes wide. "What? No! No, I'm not mad, why would you think I'm mad? I'm not mad. I'm not, I wouldn't nev—no, I'm not mad, Blair, no, not even a little," he sputtered stupidly.

Maybe he'd gone a little overboard with his attempts to keep from feeling what he was feeling, he thought in retrospect. Of course he had, because that was what Stiles did; he made things worse trying to make things better.
