THE 'TRUE SELF' MEME

"In Jungian psychology, the shadow or "shadow aspect" is a part of the unconscious mind consisting of repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts.
Everyone has another side to them that they keep hidden away, feelings they bottle up to save face or avoid conflict. But what if those feelings take a life of their own...?
Perhaps it's your best friend, a close family member, a hated enemy, or maybe it's just a complete stranger. No matter who it is, they are different now, possessing creepy yellow eyes, a distorted voice, and a disconcerting aura. Take care in what you say to them, though, because there are three little words that will set them off into an unstoppable rage...

How to:
Step 1: Post with your character with their name and canon.
Step 2: Others respond stumbling onto your character.
Step 3: WHOOPS. Character A has been replaced by their Shadow or Other Self!
Step 4: Play out the encounter! Will you start an epic boss fight? Have a pleasant chat? Or maybe just flat out ignore them? Run wild!

It might have been hours or it might have been days since they'd first come here, but Thor didn't care. Jane had been lost, here, cast adrift by an experiment gone disastrously wrong, and he meant to find her if it took until Ragnarok.
As dangerous as it was for them to be here, for both of them to be here, he was nevertheless grateful for Darcy's company. Otherwise, the mist, the endless expanse of grey skies, and the distant murmurs that might have been the wind and might have been something else might well have driven Thor well and truly insane by now.
They had been moving together through a maze of towering monoliths when the mist grew thicker and heavy, enough to blind, and something had pulled Thor forcibly away from Darcy, out of her grip. All Darcy would be able to hear would be a shout of alarm and a very brief scuffle before a crack of thunder and a flash of lightning lit the world to the point of blinding.]
no subject
She did not regret it. Jane was in danger, and Darcy would be a poor friend indeed if she sat at home twiddling her thumbs when there was actually something she could do about it. The tight grip she kept on Thor's hand, however, is only partially attributed to the increasingly terrible visibility. She draws strength from his presence, an indomitable rock who does not flinch from any foe.
She squints, trying to pierce the thick mist, but can barely see a foot in front of her. Darcy opens her mouth, intending to ask Thor a question, when he is suddenly wrest free of her grasp and hauled away. Letting out a startled cry, Darcy freezes, flinching at the sounds that seem to come from all sides.
The blinding light drives her briefly to her knees, eyes squeezed shut, hands covering them. She breathes heavily, trying to feel the air around her, with all its cloying chill. It only makes her feel that much more isolated.]
Thor? [Her voice is small, tentative, as she slowly stands, opening her eyes and blinking against the aftereffects of the lightning.]

Tony has almost as many issues as Loki, I'm realising.
It's part of why they work! For a given value of "work".
"Work" is a relative term for them, tbh.
"Function"?
I think that works. XD Also, ouch, Loki is breaking my heart.
It's always easiest to hurt the ones you love. XD
So very true.

[When Loki had finally been caught after his last escape attempt, Odin hadn't taken any more chances. Something - perhaps Frigga's memory, perhaps lingering affection for the child Loki used to be, perhaps consideration for the only son he had remaining - had kept him from killing the sorcerer outright.
So he'd sealed his powers and cast him down to Earth for SHIELD to inevitably deal with. SHIELD had found him, and done so.
They hadn't killed him, however. Loki, or at least the secrets his body held, was too potentially useful. But eventually, he'd been as good as dead. Or at least, he'd stopped responding. That had made things...easier.
Or so they'd thought. But on some deep, dark, almost-psychic level that maybe only existed between siblings, Loki had reached out, and Thor had heard.
Thor, of course, would be the first to admit that Loki had done a great deal of wrong. But when he came to investigate, he was nevertheless appalled - both at Loki's treatment, and the fact that his brother's presence on Earth had been kept from him.
That had been three days ago. Jane had eventually gone along for moral support, dragging Darcy along with her. And so they were all three of them there on site when Loki opened newly-yellow eyes at long last, where he'd been left under heavy guard in the medical bay.
By the time the alarms were sounding, his guards lay in frozen or torn pieces on the floor, and Loki had staggered out into the hallway with a bloodied scalpel clutched in one shaking hand.]
Where are you, brother...?
no subject
Thor's primary concern, naturally, is his brother. When the second set of soldiers trots by, he tells the girls to stay put, hefts his hammer, and rushes off after them.
Yeah. As if. Darcy doesn't want to be anywhere near whatever has the entire facility in an uproar. She intends to get the fuck out of dodge, but cannot seem to convince Jane to leave, even though they would be far safer outside.]
What if he needs me, Darcy?
[She grimaces, knowing Jane is being retarded but unwilling to leave her there alone. When silence descends upon them, eerie enough to make her shiver, she compromises. Jane will remain there while Darcy investigates. Not too far, mind; just enough to see what's going on, if she can.
She steps out into the hallway, looking both ways as if crossing a busy street. Nothing. No sounds of gunfire, no screaming, no supervillain monologuing. Nada. Disconcerted, though silence should reassure her, she slowly heads down the hallway, peering into rooms nosily as she passes. She turns a corner and is faced with an equal amount of nothingness.]
Must be a false alarm...

[Not unlike the inversion spell, something had caught those who lie to themselves and others with the force of a kick to the chest. The Loki that Currently Is was ripped from reality and replaced with an embodiment of all his guilt, issues, secrets, and lies. Much like the inversion, all those qualities Verity appreciated about him were nowhere to be found.
The energy that caused this new little problem knocked out power around the entire apartment, or so it would seem. Verity might see that as a lie--as a matter of fact, nothing about her current apartment likely felt true. If she stepped into the hallway, it would be just as inky black as her room, and just like her apartment, trying to look out any windows yielded only a void. Windows wouldn't open, glass wouldn't shatter, and those exits? They just weren't even there anymore. It probably almost felt like she was the only person left in the building. She wasn't.]
Verity, Verity, dear sweet Verity.
[The hall in which she heard the voice would illuminate slightly, just enough to wash his more distinguishable features in a dim glow.]
Just how did you find yourself here, Verity? You don't belong. I can take you back home.
[He could and he would if she asked. He would be more than delighted to do so.]

When the lights had first gone out, she'd assumed that it was just that - a power outage. So she'd gone to a window with the intention of looking outside and seeing how bad it was. Outside had been nothing more than inky blackness that even a city-wide outage couldn't possibly have explained. She'd tried to open the window, and it had stuck despite all her best efforts even after retrieving a hammer for assistance.
So she'd gone outside, gone knocking on the door of a few of her neighbors, just to see if they were all right. No one had answered.
It was only then that her feeling of unease was starting to overtake her determination to do something. So Verity had gone in search of Loki, who for all his many faults was just a generally good person to be around in a crises, and besides, the otherwise oppressive silence was starting to make her ears ring.
So when Loki spoke, from somewhere behind her and back down the hall, Verity let out a strangled gasp of shock even as she whirled around.
It...looked like him. It was definitely shaped like him, sounded like him. And she very much wanted to go home.
But somehow, something in his voice made Verity's hackles stay up.]
Thanks, but...kind of think we have other things to worry about, right now.
["Dear, sweet Verity" said the spider to the fly.]
