There was really no need for him to keep tabs on Max. He knew full well that she was more than capable of caring for herself. It was, after all, one of the many things he adored about her. She was fully capable and independent. She didn't actually need him. But that in itself was the rub. She didn't need him, and because of that simple and true fact, Courfeyrac felt so helpless and desperate to be in her presence that it was very nearly driving him mad. He often hung around the places where he knew she would be; the lobby, the gymnasium, and so on, just on the off chance she might happen by. It was difficult enough coming up with excuses to cross her path there and he felt unjustified in trying to intrude on her in her suite, so he dared not venture there. Instead, he took every advantage that he could just to see her, smile at her, and hear her voice.

Everything was so strained now. He loved her, he absolutely did, but admitting that to anyone, even himself, was a task so monumental he feared he might never be able to come to terms with it. She'd been like a sister to him, a baby sister, a little girl. He'd loved her so fiercely then and had died to protect her. And now she was grown, and suddenly he saw her and the world with new eyes. He could change this place. He could do it. And he wanted to do it, not just for Max, but for everyone who had and might ever suffer as she'd once been made to.

God, how he loved her.

But he could never tell her. It felt somehow wrong, like a taboo to have known her as a child and to have fallen for her. Besides that, he was a libertine, and while libertines were lovers, they were rarely if ever in love. It went against his nature to love just one girl when he could make love to whomever he chose. And anyways, it was better this way. He was a revolutionary. It was dangerous to meddle with a politically minded man. Never mind that Max was a genetically engineered killer. Pfft. When he rationalized it that way, he felt better in his decision to ease back on his visits and simply love her from afar.

Still, his heart leapt into his throat when the elevator door opened and Max was revealed inside. He gulped as she entered, and then he smiled. In that instant, his resolve seemed to evaporate. It was as though there was no one alive in the world besides the two of them. Him and Max. "What a surprise, my love. I was just headed down and hoping that perhaps you and I would meet."
