Well, you've really done it now. You're in a mental institution. Maybe it's a modern facility with a therapy garden, compassionate staff members, and a warm environment meant to help nurse people back to health, or maybe it's a glorified dungeon where the government shoves people they don't want to deal with and patients are abused by staff. Regardless of what it is, you're there, and it doesn't look like they're planning on letting you out any time soon.

Maybe you're actually not supposed to be there and you're trying to arrange for your release. Maybe you actually are meant to be there and you're struggling with your illness. Maybe you're not a patient at all and you're just there to visit or earn your paycheck. It's up to you.

[She's having "difficulty coping with her adoptive father's death", which is apparently code for "is delusional and believes that Bruce is lost in time". It's... irritating, but she won't be here for long. This little stint is mostly to appease Dick. Her intention is to cooperate for a few days, let them come to the conclusion that she's not a danger to herself, and be out of the place as quickly as possible.

For now, though, she's barely tolerating the experience. The psychiatrist who's supposed to be assessing her apparently took one look at her history and pre-determined that she was suffering from some kind of abandonment complex and now appears to be flirting with the idea of diagnosing her with reactive attachment disorder, which is just stupid. And she had the misfortune of getting a nightmare the first night she was here, so now they're encouraging her to take a light sedative at night to help her sleep.

For now, she's just sitting in one of the common areas, thumbing through someone's old copy of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.]

[Given the sheer existence of Harleen Quinzel in the world, Tim can honestly say that she's encountered enough evil psychiatrists to last a lifetime. But it looks like she has to deal with one more, because patients have been entering this clinic with their various harmless disorders and coming out of it criminally and violently insane. She's tracked them all to a single doctor, which means it's time to check herself in.

Alicia Draper has been suffering episodes of severe depression and self-injury, which nicely covers for her array of scars. Luckily, she has caring family who have sent her here to recover under the care of the expert doctors on staff. And if she happens to be investigating the clinic and trying to gather evidence of what they're doing to the patients, then who'd notice?

Hopefully no one, since Tim's currently slipped out of her room when she's supposed to be asleep so she can have a look around.]

How Bart got added to the visitor's list was anyone's guess, but he showed up every few days, almost like clockwork. Why Tim was here didn't matter, but he was going to do what he could to help make her time here a lot less torture if he could manage it.

He got along with most of the staff, and some of the other patients, doing his best to bring a little midwestern charm along with some of Tim's "homework" so she could keep up, although the pages and books were thoroughly examined before being allowed inside. No hardbound books, no three-ring binders or spiral-bound notebooks, and all other kinds of restrictions to prevent anyone from using things as weapons or to harm themselves. It was almost sad.

[It's the darkest timeline. Dipper's waved his conspiracy theories and magic and code stuff at enough of the wrong people that they've decided that maybe hanging out in the Mystery Shack is hazardous to his health and perhaps a nice, quiet hospital with helpful nurses and lots of people to talk to him and help him realize that none of that stuff is real. Gnomes? Please. The eighth and a half president? Ridiculous! One-eyed triangles with top hats?

All things considered, the therapists would have an easier time convincing him if that one-eyed triangle wasn't still floating around. Not much of an easier time since Dipper knows what he's seen, but somewhat easier.

Currently, Dipper's sitting in the cafeteria, mushing his mashed potatoes into a vaguely triangular shape and then smashing it with his fork. What issues? No issues at all.]

He's hiding, obviously, at least it had been that at first, due to a very singular case, but the constant tests, and pretending he was actually amenable had led to ... succumbing to the drugs, which were more or less a substitute for candy in this place.

He doesn't function well, which only leads to more experimentation, and basically accusations that he's not cooperating. He once begs for a phone call, just to call, please... but that's obviously not been earned, they say.

No one earns a phone call in this place, that much is obvious.
So then he'll try to escape. He's fairly sure that's one of the worse decisions he's ever made. At the moment he's trying not to succumb to the claustrophobia in isolation. He'd been in a place very similar to this as a child - doctor's insistence, but his father hated the place, and set up the house specially for a "troubled child".

His head hurts the room is making him dizzy... and he's not sure how long it's been but he wants to eat - even though the food isn't that great and is rather bland and tasteless.

{Apparently trying to poison the people of Gotham with candy had been a little harder than her and her partner in crime had first anticipated. Of course as these things always do they had started off well. They had managed to kill a whole classroom full of children before they got caught by the authorities. Candy Cane had been the first to get caught and...well she wouldn't call herself insane...except she was. Which is exactly why she's here now at Arkham Asylum. She didn't expect to be in here long. Her partner Sweet Tooth was still out there in the streets of Gotham and he wouldn't leave her here to rot. Would he? She laughed in a high pitched and slightly manic way when she thought of him leaving her behind. He couldn't do this without her. He'd be nothing without her!

This place was like hell to her. Everything was dull and dreary. There was no color anywhere and worst of all there was no candy. But she'll keep up her overly cheerful act for now. She wants them to start to underestimate her. Start to think that she's not such a threat after all and that's when she'll strike...

She lets out another sudden burst of high pitched laughter from the side of the common room she was currently standing in. Some of the patients looked at her, some of them minded their own business. She speaks, not speaking to anyone in particular}

(She might appear to be another patient or a staff member, a comforting figure even. Or she might appear to be dead with the bullet wound and calling your name. She may even alternate in appearance.)

(She's a newbie, someone with some sense of "I can do some good" but slowly becomes disillusioned over time. She still holds onto her compassion, but what if the lines get blurred? /Shippy option.)

Claiming to be from the future is an awesome way of getting yourself locked up. Wanting to kill a child or his mother will keep you there. But Harrison is charming, kind and gentle when he needs to be...just don't piss him off.

Bart Allen doesn't exactly remember how he got here. Or much of anything after the desperate moments as he realized only he had half a chance to stop Eobard Thawne and fix what damage had been done to his timestream. After that, things got fuzzy.

He knew he'd been wandering in Central City, supposedly delirious and raving. And as near as he could tell, the Speed Force was either gone or so muted he didn't have any powers to speak of. And that was why he was still here. Technically a John Doe, because there were no records anywhere of a teenaged Bartholomew Henry Allen, II. And they didn't even really let him watch or read the news because at least one doctor claimed he got 'too worked up' about his delusion that time had changed.

The only plan Bart really had was trying to find a way out before he actually started believing what everyone kept telling him.

Hanna (Movie of the same name) | OTA

On the good days, Hanna was one of the hospital's more amiable patients. She took her medication, she ate her meals and she went to bed.

The only problem was that she also had bad days, prone to fits of violence -ones that she almost always seemed to regret afterwards- or daring escapes. She'd made it all the way to the outer fence one night, and all the way to the roof another time.

No one was quite sure where she'd come from, though she insisted that she'd been living in a cabin in the arctic with her father. She often insisted a lot of things that no one could make sense of.

Yesterday had been one of the bad days, and she was still sporting a bruise from where she'd headbutted one of the orderlies and had ended up rolling herself into a table. But, alternately, today seemed to be one of the good days, as she was just sitting in a chair in the rec room, knees drawn up to her chest, watching cartoons.

Alicia Draper was checked in for severe depression and self-injury. She seems to be making a small amount of progress, although her doctor is still concerned she might try to hurt herself again. She can't really blame him. If she was someone else looking at the scar tissue on her body, she'd assume Alicia Draper was extremely creative and determined when it came to causing herself pain.

Tim Drake, however, is here because information filtered through to Oracle that there's a patient here who's a little too competently violent and might possibly be someone who should be under more specialized care.

She spent the last couple days settling into the place and observing the patients. She's finally going to attempt to make contact with Hanna, although at the moment that means sitting down nearby and sharing some silence in front of the television.

Arthur (Inception) - OTA

The thing with Somnacin was that it wasn't traditionally addictive. Or, rather, wasn't addictive in the same way things traditionally were. Of course, it altered brain chemistry the same as any other hallucinogen, and with long-term use it suppressed the ability to dream naturally and, occasionally, led to paranoid thoughts that the real world was just a dream-state that one only had to wake up from to be free.

Which was what had happened to Arthur, his business partner -who had gone through that experience once before, with his wife- recognized the signs and had been the one to turn Arthur in.

Arthur himself was incredibly lucid, even reasonable aside from his conviction that this was all a dream. That conviction was the reason he had an ankle monitor that sounded an alarm if he went any higher than the second floor because he had tried to drop himself off the roof, and not just once, but twice. His explanation had been that everyone knew that to wake up from a dream that deep you had to die.

That conviction was also the reason that he was on suicide watch, even though he didn't consider himself suicidal, and hadn't tried any other routes besides the long fall. But as had been explained to him by a very patient doctor when he'd protested, just because he hadn't yet didn't mean he wouldn't later.

Clint 'Hawkeye' Barton - MCU - OTA

Cognitive recalibration only worked for so long, apparently. Or it had only fixed part of the problem to start with.

The trouble had started a few weeks after they'd saved the world, when he'd wake with his ears ringing, he just kept thinking it would go away, until it got to the point where he was coming to in strange places with his ears still ringing and no recollection of how he'd gotten there.

A few weeks ago they'd gotten wise and shipped him here, where there was always someone to keep an eye on him, where he wouldn't be able to do anything he'd regret later.

Steve Rogers | MCU | OTA

Steve was one of the regular volunteers, he was still on-call as an Avenger, of course, and if the world needed saving he'd be there.

But in the meantime he volunteered at a lot of places, convalescent homes, soup kitchens, animal shelters, and here. He had much the same set of tasks in any location, listen to people's stories, provide a helping hand, and here he played orderly as often as he did candy-striper.

Dean was a new patient at the ward. Of course, he didn't believe he belonged there, but that was a story for another day. For now though, they have all been ushered into the day room for their 'social' time (social time was for suckers) and he's staring at the orderly with a way too straight back and clean cut look--even for an orderly, it's a little over the top.

When the guy passed by closer to where he was sitting, he spoke up to catch his attention.

"Dude. Hey, dude. I know you from somewhere..."

No one really knew where she'd come from, all they knew was that her story of having been inside a computer had to be wrong and that maybe she'd seen the Matrix one too many times.

She'd had no ID on her when she'd been brought in by a good Samaritan, and they could only guess she'd been isolated for most of her life, or had gone through some sort of trauma, but no amount of time talking with the therapists had done any good. She stuck to her story and wouldn't be swayed from it.

She was in the library, curled up on a windowsill seat, watching the rain outside, book open in her lap.

Witnessing his mother's murder as a child caused Barry to snap and fall into a self imposed silence. There also might be a man in yellow who speeds in to taunt Barry and make him break down further.

A man dressed in red, trailing yellow lighting is speeding through the hospital, can you see him, did you let him down. First catch him and you may find out.

A quiet orderly who uses his height and strength to keep the patients in line. He doesn't seem to be afraid of much, but he's kind, gentle and sweet.


[Delusion]

A ghost of failures past, Sam haunts anyone who let someone die or suffer for no reason. He comes from hell as a burning soul, screaming out in pain. If you knew him it's worse because he taunts you for your failures.

What if Castiel hadn't taken Sam's delusions away. Well you'd get a shaking, terrifed mess of a moose who screams for his brother, taunts a version of the devil only he can see and talks about angels. Try to help him at your own risk.

Gabriel has always believed it's the quiet nights with Sam that are probably the worst. If he's shouting and screaming then at least he isn't' stuck inside his own head, it means he knows where he is and that his brother is somewhere else. The quiet nights Gabriel worries.

Most of the guests talk to themselves, or to people that aren't there. Talking to the devil or to angels isn't rare either, although to be honest the way Sam does it is chilling. It's as if they have a far more... personal relationship. It's more than the devil persuading a sinner, it's not business-like.

Which is exactly why on those quiet night, Gabriel makes sure to check on Sam more often.

When Mary had given John the flash drive with her past, she told him she would go to prison for the rest of her life. She hadn't thought him capable of getting her sectioned. "For the baby," he had said. But because he had done this against her will (probably with Mycroft's help), she would never be released until they decided she could be released.

She supposed she should be grateful. This place was used by MI-6 for their agents when such intensive therapy was needed, so they would at least understand. Now, two months in, she was hoping she could get herself released by Christmas. She had done everything they asked, which is why she suspected that Mycroft or John had total control of her stay. Because it didn't seem to matter that she was trying. If she wanted to be out by Christmas, she had only two months.

She hadn't seen Sherlock since she had been brought in. For all she knew he had died. Well, in that case, perhaps she does deserve to be here, if only because she had caused the original injury. John had only come once - it was early days when she was so angry and hurt by what he had done that the visit went poorly. She still hoped that one day, John might find it in his heart to forgive her and release her.

Lizzie had been in the institute for some time, her mind set that it was the eighteen hundreds and her sister would come to release her. The nurses had tried to tell her her sister was dead, but what did they know? They were stupid and deluded creatures...No, Emma would be here soon.

Until then though, she spent her time watching people. Today, she'd been watching the one they called Mary. She seemed to think they'd let her go if she was good...pfft, they wouldn't, not in her opinion. She was just playing into the game the nurses and doctors played.

Waiting until Mary was sitting at one of the tables, Lizzie finally approached the woman, sitting across from her, her big eyes intelligent and a little crazed. "They'll not let you go unless someone comes to release you, they don't like letting us free."

This is Dean who never actually was a hunter. But he believes he is. And he believes that everyone around him is woven into his intricate story of a lifetime of hunting monsters and saving people, fighting the devil, befriending angels, going to Hell, Heaven, Purgatory and everywhere in between. His only solace from his actual past traumas in life is to escape into this fantasy world--although even there he has demons that eat him. But at least there he has his brother and Castiel, as opposed to reality where he is horribly alone and surrounded by strangers in a sterile psych ward.

Orderly
Dean is a surprisingly gentle orderly. He likes spending time with the patients, even if he's supposed to be supervising them, and has no problem making jokes with them or giving long sessions about the perfection of Keith Moon's drum skills or how classic American muscle cars are supposed to sound. On the other hand, get too out of hand with him or push him to a point and he becomes a tough, no nonsense person, and with his height and size, most patients pay attention.

The retro virus, designed to change a Wraith's feeding from sucking the years from a human, to "normal" food, had worked. After over six months, a serum was developed and Todd took it, wanting change for his kin more than any other. But the detox he had to go through had almost been not worth it.

Agony, shivers, hot flashes, nausea, you name it, he went through it for two weeks. Doctors Beckett and Keller considered taking him off the drug, but the Wraith was stubborn, and endured it.

He was now on normal food, under watch at a special hospital, where he'd remain until there was a certainty that the retro virus worked and could be distributed to the rest of his kind.

But two months after the detox, he was still having trouble coping. His appetite was almost non-existent for starters, his sleep habits were too much or not at all, and to top it off, he had moments of great anger, taking out his frustrations on the orderlies, even trying to feed off one once, though the feeding slit was gone.

So, they'd moved him to a different ward and to a floor with no one else on it to keep him solitary. And after that, bit by bit, seemed to forget about him, checking in on him via cameras as contact with humans seemed to upset him.

However, for the first time in he didn't know how long, the doors unlocked and he turned to see who was gracing him with a face-to-face visit.

[A generally quiet patient who holes up in odd places, often on the floor behind stacks of books. He isn't entirely antisocial, but he has a sharp tongue, and he doesn't like to be touched.

Leo hears voices in his head, and sees little golden lights no one else can see. At this point, he has no reason to think he doesn't belong in this place. Not when he still has occasional screaming fits, trying in vain to block the voices out. Not when he violently refuses to let anyone take his glasses off, or cut his hair. He's not stupid. He knows perfectly well why he's here.]

Doctor

Not much was known about the strange man that had come to be one of the head doctors at the hospital but considering his skill level, no one really questioned his mysterious nature. He didn't associate much with any of the other doctors, far too focused on his patients, and there was always something about the way he looked at his patients; something so fascinated and awed.

It was a look that said he wanted nothing more than to get into their head and learn more.

Calvin had planted himself in the hospital with a goal in mind. He wanted to find others he could use, find individuals that had the potential he sought to make things happen. His first attempt had failed but that wasn't going to stop him from trying again.

Not when he had so much at stake.

The doctor strolled down the hallway, making his usual rounds to check on some of the more intriguing patients he'd come to call his own, arms behind his back as he hummed a merry little tune.

Every hospital had those patients that everyone knew not to mess with. Doctors approached with an air of caution and generally a few security guards in tow and the other patients? Well, most tended to keep their distance; crazy but not crazy enough to tempt fate.

It had been SHIELD that landed him in the asylum, Calvin far from pleased with the situation but they had taken precautions to dampen his strength and keep him from escaping.

Sadly, it did nothing to keep his temper in check.

Hands gripping the back of the chair he stood near, the man glanced around the room, sneering at a few that dared to look at him. It was odd to grip something so tightly and have nothing happen; frustrating even as he scoffed and knocked it to the side, taking up pacing now as he started to mutter to himself.

[Dottie knows this state of being is temporary. It's only a matter of time before she'll break out and away. Leaning back against the wall she watches the man pacing - passively.

SHIELD's asylums are rare. They're more prone to putting people in places and forgetting they exist. Forgetting to put them there. Other projects (the Arkham project anyone?) are shelved. People here are just too powerful or dangerous.

The muttering gets an eyebrow raise.]

[It's over, now. He's in here for having a split personality, but these people can't help him. Telling them details would mean the chance of 'getting better' and being let out. Tadashi knows his other personality is dangerous, so this is where he'll stay, for other people's safety, for the sake of everyone he loves. The psychologists haven't connected the 'Saionji' personality to anything criminal yet, but he knows the truth.

And in all honesty, as much as it hurts his Aunt Cass and his little brother Hiro to see him like this, at least they're safe from him. Everyone is safe, and so this institution with its' guards and endless locked doors is like a sanctuary. Not that he's free from lying and pretending he's fine - that will never happen - but some of the load has been taken from off his shoulders.

Tadashi Hamada is a kindly inmate, a listening ear to his fellow patients and an optimist in spite of it all. Even in these life circumstances, there's good that can be found, if you look for it.]
