oh jayne.
Jayne was... well, he was Jayne - obnoxious, sexist, dimwitted Jayne. That had been her impression of him for a long time, and she hadn't spent much time with him. That is, not until he went and did something kind, something that went against everything he was. So she confronted him about it, when they were back on the ship, and she had invaded his living quarters.
"Why did you save me? Those bandits had money to spare. You, of all people, should have taken the money and just left," she accused him, confused and therefore a bit angry with what had happened. She'd been kidnapped, the crew and the ship still in space, just near the planet, leaving only Jayne. Inara was certain she was going to be sold into slavery, but he wouldn't let that happen.
Jayne the carebear. lol
He was astounded at first, looking at her with his mouth agape because he was unsure how to answer her question. Plus, he thought it was kind of perfectly obvious. Inara was family, part of the crew, and Jayne was hired to watch over said crew. He took those vows to heart. Sure, he griped about it, and he also thought Mal was doing a piss poor job, and it should be Jayne's command, and not Mal's! Still, this ship, the people in it where, for all intents and purposes, his family--next to Ma, and Maddie. So, he wasn't going to just sit idly by, and leave Inara to be sold into sexual slavery.
After a few silent moments, he finally collected his thoughts enough to speak on the matter. "Well, ain't you goin' as moon-brained as River, 'Nara. Yer part of my crew, yer family. I ain't one to leave family twistin' in the wind," but that wasn't the whole story. And you could tell, just by looking at him, that he was hiding something more. He always had a bit of a crush on Inara, and he was always fascinated with her line of work, and wanted to always have some kind of time with a Companion.

But he wasn't really dumb, and right now, she felt a little guilty for thinking that about him. Because Inara knew he wasn't telling her the complete truth. Part of her knew she should have just thanked him again for saving her life, then turned and walked back to her shuttle. Instead... she hesitated. The last thing she needed was another complicated relationship on Serenity, but she couldn't help but feel a little indebted to him. She knew her way around a simple gun, but she wasn't the 'warrior' that he was. She had needed his help.
"Jayne," she began carefully, raising her brow, "is that really why you saved me? The only reason why?"

He swallowed the lump forming in his throat, squared his shoulders, and gave her a look. Intent on making her uncomfortable just so he could continue to hide his secret from her the best he knew how.
"What 'xactly are ya implyin' there, 'Nara? I jus' tole ya why I saved ya, what more do ya want?" His voice was gruff, but there was a hitch to it. This felt so bad to do, but he needed his secrets, didn't he?

Yet now, she is sure he's hiding something. The suspicion is clear on her face as she frowns at him, hesitant to leave but knowing it would be for the best. Any urge to peel back one of his layers and see deeper could only be a bad idea. She figured she would see nothing there that would surprise her.
"I want the truth, Jayne," she said simply, stepping closer. It was good that they were alone, because otherwise Inara is sure they wouldn't be having this conversation. "You didn't save me only because I'm part of your crew, did you?"

"What answer are ya lookin' for anyway? What magical answer do ya want from me, huh? Confess my soul, an' for what? So, you can look down on me as per usual, but with the added bonus of the truth?" His words were intense, but there was an actual fear driving them, and it showed.
