The Superhero's Significant Other Meme

You're just an average Joe (or Joanna, as the case may be). You live a normal, unassuming life and go on with your day-to-day business. There is, however, one thing about you that is a little unusual - beside your sparkling personality.

You're dating a superhero.

So, what's in this week's issue? Are you childhood friends come together? Do you actually know your love is that caped crusader? If you do, is it a thorn in your side that you will always come second to the cause? Of course, there's always going to be that annoying time where they try to "protect" you by breaking up with you. Oh joy. Well, at least, how's your sex life? Surely those super powers can make for some interesting bedroom trysts. Maybe after one of them, you can tell your beau that you're a superhero, too.

...but what if your significant other isn't the hero? What if they're the villain?

[ There were certain distinct disadvantages to having serially dated three different superheroes within a few years of each other. For William Laurence, the disadvantage was that he was made late for meetings at SHIELD because an enemy of Kazilik holding a grudge decided that the best way to get his attention was to take a hostage. It would have been more alarming if this wasn't the third time in the past eight months that this had happened. As it was, Laurence ended up dispatching the man himself with a punch to the throat.

Not the smartest move considering this beast prided himself on the chitinous bone armor he'd gained in an botched experiment. The enemy was down but Laurence's hand was quickly turning black and blue from the abuse. With his undamaged hand he take out his phone and calls John. ]

John, could you let Riley know that I'm going to be late for the meeting today? I had an unexpected delay...

[ How to explain that he'd throat punched a bioterrorist into submission? There was also the matter that he was reasonably sure he'd broken his hand doing so. ]

[John Granby has had a pretty decent career so far as Kazilik, with his fire powers coming in handier than expected in both the professional and personal spheres of his life. (S'mores on demand? Hell yes.) Sure, there are a few super villains who are still a little bitter that he set their secret bases ablaze and threw them in jail, but most where smart enough to leave him and his friends alone.]

[Most.]

[After he'd fallen into a relationship with a SHIELD agent, said boyfriend had gotten kidnapped an exorbitant amount of times on his account. Laurence was trained of course, and he was always fine in the end. But it was still horrifying to get a phone call like this.]

Will? [He doesn't eve have to explain what happened for Granby to know, but he'll ask anyway.] What kind of delay?

[And he's already half way out his apartment door, struggling to get a coat on without dropping his phone.]

[ Rather than explain he takes a photo of the unconscious villain and uploads it directly to Granby's phone. His hand is already starting to throb, a punishment for not investing in a pair of knuckle dusters after his last combat evaluation showed his unfortunate tendency towards punching rather than more advanced martial techniques. ]

I'm beginning to think I might need to find a new flat. [ Clearly his current one was now known considering he'd been taken from his parking garage. ] Would it be alright if I stayed with you tonight?

[ He puts the phone on speaker as he tries to find a sturdy piece of cable to tie up his would be kidnapper. His hand makes some vocal objections to the effort. ]

...I also might need a lift to the hospital.

[The picture comes through and he nearly, nearly starts screaming obscenities at the sight of it.]

You've got to be shittin' me--

[To hell with the stairs, he's climbing out onto the fire escape, somehow balancing the phone while still sliding down the railings. Too bad flight wasn't in his line up of super human abilities, or he'd already be in the stratosphere instead of fumbling with his car keys.]

Of course you're staying with me. [As if he was going to let him out of his sight after giving him a heart attack like that.] God Will, are you okay?

[That villain, who he couldn't be arsed at the moment to remember the name of, would be lucky to escape the day without a serious set of burns.]

I think my hand might be broken, though that's my own fault. His throat is less armored than the rest of him but sturdy enough.

[ He finally finds a suitable cable and begins the work of tying up the Grand Chevalier with just one good hand. Thank god for his experience with the navy giving him a ridiculous amount of knowledge regarding knots. ]

I'll just need a lift to the hospital. Don't go rushing and causing any traffic accidents, I'm perfectly fine beyond my own self inflicted wounds.

You broke your hand. [Deadpan. God Laurence, he can't take you anywhere.] Just, hold on, I'll be there soon. Don't do anything stupid.

[He doesn't hang up so much as put it on speaker and throw it on the dash in front of him. He can totally drive safely and get there in record time, thank you very much.]

[...hold on.]

Where the devil are you?

[ Dryly. ] Yes, I broke my hand. It seemed like a easy enough trade off rather than letting him break something rather more vital.

[ Like his neck.

At the question of his location he simply activates the tracking beacon that SHIELD had installed on his phone after the last kidnapping incident. ]

I turned on my tracker, you ought to be able to find me now.

[ While he waits for John to arrive he contemplates sitting down for a rest. In the end he'll be found sitting on some piled bags of cement with his feet braced upon the Grand Chevalier's back. The villain is still unconscious thankfully, though Laurence will be glad to see the back of him. ]

[Oh god, don't say that. He doesn't want to think about what could have happened.]

Even though that might be true, it doesn't change the fact that you're hurt. [One way or another, William Laurence is going to be the death of him.] I have it, so stay put, and try not to break anything else.

[Thankfully it's not too far away-- though that is a bit disturbing when he thinks about it, that some crazy enemy was camping out so close to home, but it works out in the end. And he only breaks half a dozen speed limits to get there.]

[Granby has called in a retrieval unit too for good measure, mostly because he doesn't want to have to drag the villain in himself. That and he has an idiot boyfriend to take to the hospital.]

Will!

[ Laurence rises when Granby arrives, nudging Grand Chevalier to ensure he's still unconscious before going to greet his boyfriend. Contrary to his reassurances he's got a few bumps and bruises from the initial kidnapping and the fight that followed. Thankfully he also has the good grace to look sheepish about it.

Though to his credit, he hasn't broken anything else since Granby ended ]

John.

[ His hand is already rather swollen and he's feeling it quite a lot now that the adrenaline has worn off. And yet at the same time there's a part of him bursting with pride at having taken down a metahuman with his bare hands. ]

I'm sorry for worrying you so much, truly. But he ought to be down until retrieval takes him away.

You idiot. [There's no venom or heat in it, no real intent behind the words; he's just relieved Laurence is (mostly) alright. The insult is further undermined by Granby dragging him into a hug, mindful of his injuries but appropriately crushing none the less.] You have to stop scaring me like that.

[Whether Laurence is into PDA is irrelevant, considering the retrieval team isn't there yet and the Grand Chevalier is out for the count.]

I'm buying a new security system and you're never leaving.

[ Despite his aches, John's threats drag a laugh out of him. Laurence rests his forehead against his boyfriend's and smiles. ]

Will this one also manage to keep your cat in? The last three couldn't do that much.

[ To be fair, Iskierka was a terror of a cat, as smart as his own Temeraire but with a predilection towards destruction that was all her own.

He means forward to kiss John softly while they still have the privacy for it. ]

You don't need to worry so much, I should have been on alert this morning but I was preoccupied talking with my father or this never would have happened.

[ooc: AU Twenty-something Mindy who has supposedly given up the vigilante way of life. Bring on the unsuspecting significant others.]

[He'll probably be the hapless significant other...]
