The Harem Genre Meme

The harem genre: because love triangles are so overrated.

TV Tropes (I'm not linking it for your own good) defines this genre as having "one lead, and at least three, often a lot more, characters who are romantically interested in him or her. Usually, each character personifies a single classic characterization archetype." So basically, one character is the object of affection of several others. This leads to hilarity (or angst) ensuing as the protagonist tries to sort out their feelings and the competitors try to win their beloved's heart.

HOW THE MEME WORKS
1. Before you comment with your character, use the Random Number Generator to find out their role in this crazy little game called ~love~.

ONE. The Object of Affection: Congratulations! You now have a small army of people who are in love with you! Hopefully, your group is fairly sane.
TWO. A Member of the "Harem": You're in love, whether you admit it or not. But, unfortunately for you, you're not the only person with eyes for your sweetheart. Love is a battlefield, as they say, and you might just have to fight for your right to be with them. ...And that might just be literal.

2. Once you have your character's role, comment! In the subject line, you might want to include character name, canon, any preferences (het, f/f, etc), and role. If both roles are okay, you can note that.
3. Others will respond, rolling for the scenarios.
4. Play out the scene!
5. For a meme like this, threadjacking or other characters "interrupting" might be fun. You can put if you're alright with that or not. It also might be better to ask before you jump in if someone hasn't said yea or ney.

SCENARIOS

For The Object of Affection and A Member of the "Harem"
1. Meeting for the first time:
This is how the two met, and how one party presumably fell in love with the other. Did they meet at school? On the job? Perhaps there was magic involved, or some kind of quest to save the world. At any rate, this is the encounter that started it all. Maybe it was love at first sight, or something rockier.

2. Confrontation:
One of you is ticked off. Maybe you're tired of the person you love being surrounded by other men/women. They shouldn't be so...so...flirtatious! Or on the other side of the coin, you might be ticked off at someone you didn't even ask for being way too clingy. You don't like them that way! Whatever's happening, some angry words are being said.

3: Confessions:
The cat's out of the bag now. Everyone's coming clean, and, if you're lucky, you're the one that special person is choosing.

4: Make up your own scenario.

"Harem" Member vs. Harem "Member"
1. Competition:
It's a cook-off! No, it's a show of brute strength! ...A sing-off? Heck, it might be something completely mundane and not even a competition for both parties. But at least one of you wants to show off how much more worthy of your love's attention and adoration you are.

2. Confrontation:
You've seen how that hussy has eyes for your baby, and you've had enough. It's time to lay down the law. Whether you chose to give them a stern talking to, try to sabotage their "date" with your potential love interest, or go with the good ol' fashion punching their lights out, you want them to know you mean business.

3. Giving up:
Try as you might, you just can't keep up with this game anymore. Or, on the more depressing side, you've noticed that the other person is much better for your love than you are. So, you've decided to remove your horse from the race, and you're telling the competition as much.

4. Make up your own scenario.

You sure are spending a lot of time with those other Servants.

[Shirou takes a long glance at the beer being placed in front of him at the table. And then mentally giving all sorts of thanks to whatever god that can hear him that Taiga isn't around to take it all.]

It can't be helped, you know. A lot of them are either associated with people I know or come here to freeload and talk to whoever comes around here.. Kind of like other people I know.

...I actually made a contract with you.

[Though seeing how many other Servants have also made at least provisional contracts, this doesn't amount to much.]

And I help you with feeding all those other mouths.

And because of that, I keep giving you the more larger portions than Saber gets. That's called 'rewarding', Lancer. Why is this a problem all of a sudden? You didn't seem to mind all of this before until now.

...We barely hang out alone together anymore.

[Lancer was like a puppy dog--he wanted the entirety of anyone else's attention at any time, even as he himself clearly got easily distracted.]

Between work, school, and coming home to make dinner and all. What, is there something you want to do with me? I mean, I guess I can make plans this weekend coming up soon. But you do realize if we go somewhere, then there is a chance that other people would want to come in on this guy's hang out thing.

... although I wouldn't mind if you keep Archer out.

We can go fishing on Saturday. After I get off of work. I know a secret spot.

Oh. Sure, I don't mind. But I'm not sure if we even have a fishing set here. [Nevermind he can probably project a fishing pole but shhhh.]

In the worst case scenario, I'll just tie a string to my lance.

[That was how he had fished before poles were invented.]

N-No offense, but I'd rather not have to deal with anything involving your lance. Again. Specially if it's something with only you and me here.

[Everything about her manner seemed hesitant, her tail and ears drooping, and she couldn't look him in the eye. But she'd come to him for a reason, and she wasn't about to back out now after she'd worked up the nerve to talk to him.]

Mm? What is it, young lady? You seem awfully nervous. Come come, over here.

[He motions her to come closer to him and directs her to sit down on a chair next to him. He had a glass of water ready for himself, but she looked like she needed something to drink more than he did so it was already there siting on the table for her.]

Please, try to get yourself comfortable. Is there something the matter, dear?

[The way she moves is almost guarded, and when she sits her hands are placed in her lap even though she murmurs a quiet thank-you for the water. It takes her a moment before she can think of the best way to phrase what she's trying to say.]

I... [Her voice and hands are shaking, so she has to take a deep breath to calm them, loosely clasping her hands between her knees as she stares at the floor between her feet.]

For a long time now, I know we've been watching over the same person. I know I never spoke openly about it, and tried to hide my feelings, since because of what I am I knew it would never work out. I'd...hoped, I guess, that there might have been a chance, but that was stupid of me and I know that now. I never had anything to offer that wasn't outclassed for miles by others, and it will only cause everyone more problems for everyone if I don't realize this. So I just came to say that...

[She bites her lip hard, fighting to keep her voice steady and hold back the tears that were threatening to overflow.]

I wanted you to be the first to know that I'm sorry for causing problems, and I support you. You're a wonderful person and more than anyone could ever wish to have by their side, so please take care of the master, you're the only one I would trust in that position.

[When had her hands shifted to grip her knees so hard, she couldn't say. The pain that tightened her chest until she couldn't breathe left Mika bowing her head so Enkidu couldn't see her face, she was ashamed of herself enough as it was to want him to see her crying. Why couldn't she have held back her feelings better? She'd tried so hard to convince herself it would have never worked anyway, yet still it had lingered like a thorn in her side.

And now after all this time she'd finally given in and admitted to the defeat she'd always known she'd fall to, but it didn't make it sting any less.]
