Joan came to Albuquerque looking for a murderer.

She's still not sure exactly who it is, but the evidence suggests that the man who bludgeoned Christos Ruiz to death with a lead pipe in New York has ties to the Phoenix area drug trade. Like in drug rings everywhere, the main movers and shakers are very good at maintaining their anonymity, but the lackeys get arrested periodically, and Joan has identified three guys who she thinks have been carriers for the cartel. They're all in various stages of the judicial process, and, being desperate enough for cash to repeatedly break the law for little pay (or some drugs) they're being represented by court appointed lawyers.

Or, rather...lawyer.

Joan has been trying to talk to Mr. McGill for a week now, claiming to be a reporter writing a piece on those who represent the underprivileged, but he's never still. He pops in and out of courtrooms, in and out of meetings with prosecutors, in and out of the jail. Joan has walked with him from place to place, up and down stairs, and she wonders how this guy survives on vending machine chips and coffee. On Friday she managed to get him standing still in the court house lobby for a moment, and gave him a warm smile. Asked him in a very slightly flirtatious manner if he would like to get some decent coffee with her that weekend. Maybe actually be able to talk.

And here she is, sitting in a coffee shop, hoping he shows up. She's there to try to coax information out of him, of course...but she's also curious about him now. About what drives him, what keeps him going. How he can keep defending people who often seem pretty indefensible.

This could turn into one of her more interesting dates.
