Marriage for love is a such a modern concept. In the past, marriage was
recognised as a social contract. Unions were entered into for many
reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,
et cetera. Whatever the reason, congratulations, you're getting married!

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR MARRIAGE:
① Station → You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you.
② Feud → You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families.
③ Economics → Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down.
④ Empire → You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable.
⑤ Tribute → You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war.
⑥ Bloodline → Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection.
⑦ Disapproval → Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be.

[Oikawa having been trained in polite conversation and diplomatic matters doesn't mean he chooses to use those skills. While this marriage is for the benefit of his new fiancé's family, there are some mutterings about Oikawa's finally getting rid of him. Absurd, of course. Oikawa is a delight! Lovely company for all and could have any pick of partners to dote on for the rest of his life. But it's Yamaguchi who gets that honour.

Overall, Oikawa isn't thrilled with the situation. He likes his freedom and he thought he could keep it for much longer verging on forever but with his sister married for years he's the only option for Yamaguchi. He supposes it's good they're nearly the same age but knowing nothing about him doesn't sit well. Oikawa might die if he doesn't have a sense of humour.

And so, it's their first meeting. A rubbish day for it, rain crawls down the windows and gusts blow at the doors. They were set up for walking in the nearby gardens but somehow that doesn't seem like much of an option any more.

Oikawa shoots the rain a disgusted look. Making himself seem like the catch he's supposed to be is harder when the atmosphere doesn't cooperate. Still, he tries to remain patient as he waits for Yamaguchi to arrive. He stands, rather than sits, because if he sat down then he wouldn't be able to stop himself from bouncing his leg with nerves and that's hardly a good first impression to make.]

He had managed to convince Torchwood to let him meet the man he was going to marry first. Jack might be willing to live by 21st century rules but he was going to do it with his 51st century morals intact.

He stood in the lobby of NCIS trying to ignore the guards assigned to keep an eye on Torchwood's immortal prize and waited calmly for Tony to arrive.

INTERGALACTIC POLITICS + FIRST MEETING + BRUCE IS INSANE

[ They could've came as conquerors. With their physiology, they apparently have an incredible amount of power under the yellow sun. Their Military Guild had advocated for war, for a return to the days when they were an empire, but the Science Guild and the Art Guild rallied against them and encouraged the rest of the other Guilds to vote against war.

So they came armed with politics instead of weapons. They spoke about peace, about intergalactic cooperation. They showed Earth leaders pictures of Kryptonopolis, of sprawling crystal structures that have no equivalent on Earth. They told Earth about alternative energies and machines that they can offer to help clean up Earth's atmosphere and reverse the damage that humans have done on it.

But it will be for a price: if Krypton is to aid Earth, then there will need for there to be a more secure alliance. For security, Zod had said, an oily smile on his face.

Hostages in the form of political marriages. In which the most important - and eligible - members of both societies will be wed, and those of Earth will move to Krypton to live. There has been quite a debate regarding the idea of 'importance' on Earth - there are no such problems in Krypton, for there are strict hierarchies within Guilds - but the criteria that was settled on by popular vote was money.

Bruce Wayne is one of the richest men in the world. He is not married. Fortunately, he has recently returned from his 'long studies abroad'.

There is nothing Bruce wants less than to leave Gotham. Especially for some political marriage. His city is his priority. The world can find itself another scapegoat.

The first method: he drapes himself around men, mostly Europeans. Declares himself to be gay. Not a problem, the Kryptonians tell him. Apparently they have mastered the technologies of birthing matrices, so marriage between two of the same gender are definitely possible. Even welcomed, because there are a dearth of Kryptonian women in high enough positions to be wed.

He pretends to be a rake. Have sex with men. Have sex with multiple men. (Or, rather, do some foreplay and then leave to do what he has to stay in Gotham for-) That is frowned upon, but the Kryptonians apparently waved it off as 'Earth eccentricities' because they heard something about how humans have a higher sexual drive than Kryptonians. Bruce brooded on that for a few days, and punched criminals even harder in the face out of sheer rage. He thought that Kryptonian prudishness would win over, but no.

Another tack: he pretends to be a complete idiot. Then, and only then, do negotiations regarding his particular marriage actually stalled. Until one particular Kryptonian, named Jor-El, insists on having Bruce Wayne as his son-in-law. Something about a long ago friendship with someone of Bruce's family, which doesn't even make sense, because Bruce is the last remaining Wayne, and any other Wayne - his parents - all died before the Kryptonians came.

And things snowballed until today: the first meeting with his 'intended'. Bruce is sure that Kal-El is a nice man. Handsome too, from his pictures. But he cannot - cannot - leave Gotham. So he takes his last gamble, and pretends to be completely mad.

The man who steps out of the portal into the House of El in Krypton is dressed in an utter fashion disaster of a suit. It's too big for him, the tie too broad and garishly coloured. A pair of dark glasses - the wrong shape for his face - sits on his nose. There is a match in his mouth, and he sucks on it.

He gives his intended a sweeping bow. It's sloppy. ]

Working for Howard Stark had its advantages, but it also had it's elephant's share of disadvantages. For example, when he made enemies like Edgar Hoover and that led to personal investigations of all of those closest to Howard, including his butler and right hand man. While Jarvis had been assured repeatedly that he and his wife's citizenship had been all above board, it turned out that Stark had greased the wheels in his impatience to get his butler established in New York with him.

Now he was meant to be deported within the month if he couldn't prove that he had other, legal ties to the states. The plan that Howard had come up with was preposterous, but by this time Jarvis had little faith that Howard would be able to find anyone as capable as himself of looking after the eccentric millionaire. The debt that he owed Howard was a lifelong one and as ridiculous as the plan was, he could see no other solution than to go with it. He could only console himself with the thought that Anna wasn't alive to see him perform this level of farce.

His fiance was to be a woman that worked for Stark Industries. Howard had personally approved her after thoroughly interviewing dozens of loyal employees, though Jarvis had to doubt that the women knew quite what they were getting themselves into. He could only imagine the kind of woman that Howard would approve of as wife material, so he wasn't particularly looking forward to meeting Ms. Carbonell.

He sat nervously at the table normally reserved for Howard and his guests in the corner of the Rainbow Room, his foot tapping the ground silently from nerves rather than the music being played by the live band. He spotted the woman moving towards his table and stood up, forcing a smile. He had expected her to be beautiful, he wasn't sure Howard knew any other women, but she was absolutely breathtaking.

He held out his hand for her. "Ms. Carbonell?"
