[ A little under two decades ago, the Kryptonians came to Earth. Hundreds of them, their alien anatomy receiving power beyond any human's imagining underneath the yellow sun. They came because their world was going to self-destruct, and they needed a new one to destroy.

Their leader's name is Zod. His armies - a bare handful of Kryptonians - wiped out armies, navies, air forces, literally earth and sea and skies with soldier-corpses. Afterwards, the humans of Earth knelt before him. For the first time since its inception, the United Nations reached a unanimous vote.

The leaders said they had no choice.

But humans are stubborn. Wilful. This was their Earth, and slaves will always want freedom. No matter that Zod has instituted a new language in place of English that tried to exorcise the word from their vocabulary. They know what it means to be free. Some even remember a time when the skies were not filled with flying Kryptonians and their crafts. Some remember a day when humans didn't have the weight of chips under their skins; when they didn't wear decorative collars and worked for their own sakes instead of aliens'.

Bruce remembers only blood. The blood of his parents as they tried to protest. The way they had died, right in front of him, their throats burnt and bleeding from fires that came from a Kryptonian soldier's eyes. His parents had tried to obey, at first. They died trying to save the life of a human whose name and face Bruce doesn't even remember.

There is a rebellion. Deep underground, built around lead mines. There were none in Gotham - the industries were mostly steel, made from imported iron - but Bruce hasn't been in Gotham ever since the first night when he ran, holding tightly to Alfred's hands. Now, he's somewhere in Kazakhstan, seeking information about a meteor that has recently crash-landed.

The humans called it poetic justice. Bruce thinks that it's irony instead: Krypton taking vengeance for the destruction her people has wreaked upon her, and sent glowing green stones down to the place where they now call colony and forced to think as home.

This is what gives Kryptonians away: the way they float, half an inch above the Earth, as if their feet are too good to touch the ground. Bruce narrows his eyes. He has some of the green mineral with him, but now he reaches out and grabs a handful of the trailing robe, pulling the alien stumbling down to his level.

He doesn't kill. Not even Kryptonians. This isn't an assassination. This is, instead, a test: ]

I didn't realise that the Eastern Europe plantation warrants the personal attentions of the vaunted House of El.
