It's a dog eat dog world these days, or at least it seems like it. People have turned off their empathy and allow themselves to merely watch the world and the floundering of others as uninterested, cold bystanders.

...or the person you care for - love - the most.

There's someone like that for you. You'll put yourself in the line of fire for them because your love is that strong...even if you don't realize it yet. Or, maybe, if your definition of "love" is tolerating them more or hating them less than anyone else. It doesn't matter if you have to expose yourself to pain, to others, or to them.

Because even if you're not with them or will ever be with them in that way, some people are worth going up to bat for.

HOW TO PLAY

• Comment with your character and preferences.
• MENTION IF YOU'D PREFER TO PLAY THE ONE BEING PROTECTED OR THE PROTECTOR. FOR BEST RESULTS, BE OPEN TO BOTH.
• Feel free to play these prompts in media res or play the aftermath.

PROMPTS

1. Physical: You have to protect them from a violence or an attack.
2. Mental: They're being tortured with cruel words or subtle barbs that are putting them down, and you can't take it.
3. From Themselves: With the way they're going, they'll destroy themselves. You have to stop it.
4. From You: It's for their own good. You have to stay away from them, no matter how it hurts.
5. Take It Too Far: Seeing them in danger has pushed you over the edge - you're hulking out and going crazy! It's up to the one you wanted to protect to pull you back.
6. Abuse: Whether familial, societal, or from a significant other, they're in a bad spot and you want to get them out. Of course, it's more difficult that it seems.
7. Outing Yourself: No one except the other person knew your feelings, but now, you're standing up from them and everyone will know, possibly ruining your reputation.
8. Unexpected: Either you're a meek and mild slip of a thing no one would expect to stand up for something or you're so stoic and "uncaring" that your selflessness is a complete twist.
9. Revelation: They didn't know your feelings for them. Well, confession?
10. Sworn: You've promised to protect them longterm, either to yourself or to them.
11. Bodyguard: Whether it's unofficial or in a professional context, you're their bodyguard. Falling in love is sticky.
12. Cover Up: You're protecting them from society's gaze by pretending to be their significant other or even married to them. Hopefully, your real desires don't ruin this.
13. Instinctive: You didn't even realize how you feel for them, but your drive to protect them has made you aware - especially when you jump into harm's way without a second thought.
14. Jealous: They don't want to be around that sleaze, do they? You think you're protecting them, yet it's your jealousy coming through.
15. Rescue: Dungeons, dragons, or thugs...this is a real, all out rescue mission! There's nothing that can get in your way.
16. Sacrifice: For them, you'll do the ultimate. Your life is nothing compared to theirs, and you'll sacrifice yourself with no second thought whatsoever. But have you thought about how they'd feel?
17. Repayment: They want to pay you back for all you've done.

[Fights are over before they barely even begin these days. Someone says something, or does something that Steve disapproves of, and he tells them to knock it off. He always hopes that'll be the end of it; it almost never is. Most guys just don't like being told what to do, especially not by someone whose ass they know they could kick.

The first punch doesn't even connect before Bucky's there, gripping the offending fist in his hand. Sometimes he breaks their hands. Sometimes Steve's pretty sure he's going to do worse, so he tries to stop it, tries to talk the soldier down with his arms around his waist, whispering soft words. See, the guys who go up against the Winter Soldier are at as much of a disadvantage as Steve is against them. So what does it say about Steve if he just lets it happen.

Steve sighs when he hears the other guys beat it, and Bucky's tense in his arms, like a pitbull on alert. But he's not pulling away to chase after them. Steve presses his cheek against the larger man's back, and he can feel it move with his breathing, a rapid, angry pistoning.]
