[ Nikolai's job is a dangerous one. Full of cold knives. The KGB at his back, a constant shadow. They know what he does, but they pretend not to. They hunt him as easily as any of the vory v zakone. He's replaceable, even with the stars over his heart. Stars over his heart, stars over his knees. A man with stars is not supposed to kneel.

But he's on his knees now, his teeth against his man's thighs. Slacks. He's dressed well, for a Jew. Nikolai has need for information and payment is a nebulous thing. He has heard of this man with the powers to make a man burst into flames, like a star. Ex-Nazi. A scientist. Nikolai is a Vor, but he is an agent still. He is still Russian. He knows what it means if this man steps on American soil. He knows what the missiles mean. Nikolai is Russian. He fears not the cold. He fears the fire.

(The KGB might not believe him. He is no patriot. Nikolai has no bleeding heart and his job names him traitor over and over, inking the word to his skin deeper than any of his tattoos. He tries, nonetheless. He does not know why.)
