Wandering the keep at night was relaxing. Everything was quiet and he didn't hear a quiet voice of responsibility telling him to stand up straight, look authoritative, and whatever you do don't let anyone see you're not absolutely certain about everything.

"I happen to think it's a fine time. Surprise inspection. Everyone in their small clothes or night dress." Clever remarks made for a fine deflection in some cases. "Although I clearly haven't caught you off guard. Burning the midnight oil?"

There were more than a couple people aong his inner circle who were known to keep late nights, so if he wanted to have a quiet night outside his quarters the battlements were the place to go. Until Leliana had quietly chided him for a predictable routine that left him alone and exposed.

Hey, Varric is the king of deflecting with humor - he's all too happy to go along with it when others do it.
