No, it's OK. Our lives aren't great, but there's not a lot we can do about that without making them worse. [Either by not doing anything or by fighting monsters. It's a no win situation either way.]

The cops were, as it turns out, busy dealing with the fallout from another shooting about a block away. It had taken a while to clear the area--this one had happened on a main road and attracted a great deal of attention from irritated motorists and curious onlookers--and by the time Eddie had shown up, armed with a briefcase of supplies, the scene had become badly contaminated. He and the other techs had carefully swabbed bloodstains, photographed the body from multiple angles, taken impressions of footprints and done everything else they could think of, but it was difficult to tell who had left what and conflicting witness accounts had only exacerbated the issue. As bold as the crime had been, unless the police got a good lead, the evidence would probably be of little use.

Eddie had seen this sort of thing before, knew it could be mob-related, and thus didn't keep his hopes up. Even if someone came forward with information, the corruption in the department was such that these cases could inexplicably go cold. There was nothing he could do about that.

He'd parked at a meter some distance away, so after a final, perfectionistic sweep of the scene he packs up and takes a walk down the street, still wearing his police jacket and carrying his briefcase. The sight of Hayden stops him--could he be another victim or the suspect? Eddie looks around futilely for an officer, then watches the limping man for a few moments, trying to figure out whether he's armed. Harassing a gunman is really the last thing he wants to do.

"Excuse me!" he blurts out at last, running the few steps up to Hayden's side, his expression less concern than a frightened curiosity. "You're bleeding. Do you need some help?"

I look like him. I thought I was him for a ... a while. I sort of am. But I'm mostly me. It was his body they got rid of. The Templars. Bad ones.

[He pauses.]

Sam chuckled; he had a feeling Ash would be interested. "I'll see if I can find them. In the meantime, I need to find you a crutch so you can move around."

Maybe Ash would like to see that Growlithe, too; it must be in better shape by now, with Tracey taking care of it. At least he knows its injuries weren't anything his assistant couldn't handle, or he would have asked for his help by now.

Hayden paused, looking the guy over carefully. The GCPD jacket he was wearing didn't inspire much confidence. There could be no official record about this, which was why he'd decided a hospital visit was out of the question. He did need help though. It was hard for him to assess the severity of his wounds on his own, and most things medical were beyond his scope.

"That depends," he replied, voice neutral but eyes narrowed. "Are you gonna report it?"

He would be more than happy to see the Growlithe though to make sure that it's okay. Maybe even help find its owner later once he's gotten a little rest.

[That starts to give him the shape of things, as it were, and it's a shape that's too familiar. Anders' jaw tightens at the mention of 'templars' and there's a surge of anger from Justice as well. Another abuse, an injustice, inflicted on his people by those who claimed to be their protectors. Another reason things had to change.

Taking a breath, Anders steadied himself and exhaled slowly. Getting angry about past actions of templars wouldn't help now, only draw attention to them both.]

Templars, I'm not surprised. It seems they got up to a lot of that kind of thing no matter what Circle it was.

[What they'd done to him, to Karl, to the mages of Kirkwall... Sometimes it was more of a wonder that he could still control himself enough not to simply attack them on sight.]

[One second he was on his own, fighting with a wolf with his back to a tree, knowing all the while that he didn't really stand a chance against a wolf. Then he wasn't on his own, and the chances, at least in his eyes, became far more in his favor as another wolf attacked the one trying to devour him. Carolyn, it had to be, and he wasn't going to leave her to fight this wolf on her own, even if he was far less capable in the fight than she was.

Once he had the space to do so, Roddy darted all the way out of the hole in the tree, scurrying under the wolf, and biting the underbelly of the wolf with his razor sharp incisors.]

[Sounds about right. Hawke's magic is anything but delicate and careful when he's using it to light people on fire. He swings it like their warrior friends swing their blades- Anders, meanwhile, wields his like a scalpel.

He briefly panics as Anders hisses, assured that he's killing him by doing it wrong, but the press of the hand on his face makes him slow down.]

[He bites his lip and eases up on the spell, making it more gentle, trying to focus on what it does rather than forcing it through. And in a way he can see what Anders means. He feels the flesh stirring beneath his fingers through his mana, like little pinpricks on a gloved hand. He feels the wound and tries to ease the magic over it to let it do what it can.]

Soubi could easily have fallen asleep right there, had let himself start to drift when he heard footsteps return and the order. He could easily have ignored it.

...But he was so tired. Tired of making his own choices. Tired of everything. So he simply obeyed, forcing his battered body to move again and shrug off the heavy coat. Reminded of the glasses that had managed to stay on his nose, he blinked before simply plucking them off and dropping them carelessly into the hand stretched out to him.

And he was too tired to do more than tense a little at the touch to his neck, but made no attempt to pull away. Why hide the name that had been carved into his neck, the name that bled each time he went against it? 'Beloved'. For someone who was not loved. Ironic.
