Despite popular conjecture, romance doesn't have to be overwrought or over the top like a Shakespearean tragedy or a terrible Nicholas Sparks novel. Sure, there needs to be some intimacy to make it, well, romantic, but there are plenty of relationships that blur the lines between "friendship" and "relationship" in every way they can. In fact, your romantic partnership is just like that. It feels like you're dating your best friend, really, and in most cases, isn't that the best, most healthy thing? You're completely comfortable around them, and you never have to worry about being at odds - most of the time. You hang out, you bro out, you do things you both enjoy. And sometimes, you can even kiss or make out. How awesome is that? Maybe you were friends first and this is just a natural outgrowth of what you started, or you could prefer all relationships to be more bromances. Of course, throwing a twinge of romantic love or sexual attraction into the mix and even the best friendships can get...complicated. If anyone can beat the odds, though, it's you guys! Not having to care if your roommate is around or up, because like she gives any shit if you're naked.

Mion and Minako went together like . It was no surprise that they were thick as thieves. They were both outgoing, social, a little (or a lot) mischievous, upbeat... there were differences, of course. Minako was the good cop, to put it simply, a little sweeter, a little softer around the edges. Not to say she wasn't just as much of a ne'er do well as Mion, just that she was more apologetic about it.

Still, that was the catch: they were both mischievous young women. Teasing and joking was something they enjoyed, and that included joking about sex and romance. Who was attractive, who wasn't attractive, who had crushes on who...

The fact that they might have had a crush on each other never came up, but it was kind of an open secret. They flirted, teased, and joked with each other, neither of them willing to make the first 'but seriously' move.

So they just stuck to teasing. Like, say, Minako taking a dive in their after-school card game, playing it just seriously enough that Mion (hopefully) wouldn't catch on to the fact that she was losing on purpose. The penalty games were the more fun part anyway, at least to Minako, and she didn't have any ideas for a good one. "My luck is the worst," Minako huffed, brushing her hair back with her hand. It was true. Even when she wasn't losing on purpose, her wins were few and far between. Another reason she was hoping to get away with this.

"So, what's the plan for today, old timer?"

[Snafu's fingers are tight on the steering wheel, maybe not quite tight enough so his knuckles burn white, but he's definitely gripping hard. He's distracted - clearly - but the route is familiar and he barely needs to concentrate on the drive away from his dad's old farmhouse at all. Just because he didn't think he'd ever make it back here after his first couple weeks in the desert, doesn't mean he's forgotten the roads.

They added maybe five days onto the trip home, taking it slow, stopping in Dallas and, yes, in that goddamn national park for a day or two, where Gene seemed happy enough to almost seem like a different person, and so Snaf kept his opinion about birdwatching surprisingly quiet, for him. They still hadn't really said a word about what they were doing or why they were inching along, stopping in towns neither of them had ever heard of, let alone wanted to visit, to check out weird shops and roadside attractions.

Finally there was nothing left but the stretch of highway that branched off to Snaf's dad's farm. Then it seemed - to Snafu at least - too late to talk.

His dad hadn't been unhappy to see him; he hadn't hugged him either. He hadn't mentioned that it took them longer than expected. It had been a handshake that didn't last long enough, a cup of coffee around the scarred kitchen table in the kitchen with its peeling wallpaper, half an hour as the sun got lower in the sky. He'd called him Merriell and talked about the farm and Snaf's brothers and never said he was glad his son hadn't died in Iraq. He'd greeted Gene with a nod and asked a few questions about his family. He'd never asked about his plans for the future and he hadn't asked his son either. Then he had some machine to put away or cows to feed or whatever the fuck before the sun set and he'd pushed back his chair and they were dismissed. It had been a quick, unemotional reunion, and then they'd left.

And now here they are, driving in silence, Snaf's fingers curled around the wheel like he's trying to hold on to something that's fighting to get away. He's got a cigarette held between his teeth and smoke curls around his face. Usually they drive with music, but he didn't flip on the radio when they got in the car and it's just about the furthest thing from his mind right now. Another half hour and he'll be home - what passes for home, anyway - in his shitty little room in New Orleans.

And Sledge will be leaving. Can't forget that.]

The bed was soft, for a hotel bed. Ryuichi was used to traveling for shows by now, and he didn't mind the driving, or the plane rides (he loved those), or missing people back home, or even the hectic uncertainty of where he was going to be from one day to the next. Ryuichi liked his life to remain at least a little bit hectic. What he did mind, though, was the boredom that always seemed to find him in hotel rooms. It was really hard to stay entertained when everybody he knew was back home.

But now that Nittle Grasper was back together, he was traveling with Tohma (and Noriko, Ryu, did you forget?)! Bouncing himself off the bed, he walked to the door leading into the hall, opening it and bounding across the way to the door on the opposite side. He tried the door but it was locked, so he settled instead for knocking. Loud.
