THE CAPTIVITY MEME

You've been captured -- or maybe you've been held captive for a while now. Whatever the case, you've lost your freedom, and there's a specific person responsible for that. You might be a prisoner, a mental patient, a kidnap victim, or someone's pet. Maybe you're there willingly, or maybe the choice has been taken away from you completely.

Both smut and non-smut scenarios are possible. If you don't want to play smut, please indicate so in the title line of your tag.

1. Leave a tag with your character. Be sure to include any limits on what you are willing to play, as this meme has the potential to be triggering.

2. Someone else tags in and uses RNG to generate a number between 1 and 9. The second character is holding the first character captive now.

3. ???

Scenarios

1. For their own good. Does this person really think they could make it on their own? It's a big, scary world out there, and you need to protect them from it, whether they like it or not.

2. For the good of society. Forget protecting this person -- it's your duty to protect the world from them! Maybe they committed a terrible crime, or maybe they were falsely condemned, but it's your job to keep them locked up where they can't do any more harm.

3. Because they're not well. How's your bedside manner? Whether you're Florence Nightingale or Mildred Ratched, you're in the position of ministering to the mentally ill. Maybe this person genuinely needs your help, or maybe you're just turning a blind eye to their true sanity.

4. For the money. Higher aims? What higher aims? This person is your meal ticket, and they're staying put until their loved ones pay up.

5. For their love. It might be a case of yandere, or it might be a consenting BDSM relationship. Whether it's by mutual agreement or by force, you're keeping them simply because you love them.

6. Because they're cute and fluffy. Who's a cutesy wutesy? They are! Yes, they are! This person is your pet now. Maybe they're a different species from you, or maybe you just don't care that you're both people. Maybe you're even an alien zookeeper looking after a new acquisition.

7. Because they're your property. Slave? Livestock? Who cares what they think - they're our property, and you decide their fate.

8. For the lulz. Hey, what's a little bondage between friends? You'll let them go, once you're done laughing and snapping photos... maybe.

9. Choose a scenario, or combine several.

Hunter doesn't exclusively work with Hartley's group. There are times when a prospective employer doesn't need that many guys, or can't afford to take the whole set. They're not cheap, after all. Each of them is more than capable of doing little jobs on their own, or little jobs surrounded by more affordable hires. As a gesture of solidarity, they typically split their takings, as if they'd done it together.

He tries to pick wisely. If he quit every time he was asked to do something he hadn't signed up for, he'd be broke. He'd have more enemies. Still, he's not amoral. He'll work against units of the British army, even the SAS if he's pushed to it and the pay's good, but he won't work against SHIELD. That's one of Izzy's rules, and his own preference. If a job is guaranteed to pit them against the agency, they don't take it. If the wind changes in that direction, that's their cue to bow out quietly. No money is worth burning those bridges.

The job he meant to do today was simple and harmless on paper. Well, harmless provided he didn't give much thought to the far-reaching consequences. Just a small group of mercs, buying some weaponry for a bloke in the private sector who wouldn't want that sort of purchase on his bank statement. They were supposed to make the trade and deliver the weapons, giving as good as they got if anyone tried to stop them.

Unfortunately, SHIELD stormed the supplier's place while the deal was going down. It turned out that the weaponry was based on reverse-engineered alien technology, which is exactly the type of thing that SHIELD wouldn't want proliferating in the weapons market. It turned into a panic, a firefight.

Hunter made it out almost unscathed, but he's not the first one back to the flat, where they said they'd regroup if things went to shit. As soon as he's through the door, he learns that the others managed to take a hostage. That might explain how they escaped at all. It was probably a heat of the moment decision, and now it's too late to go back on. Besides, the mercs are feeling resentful about the job they can't finish, the money they won't get. And now they've got someone to direct that resentment toward.

The first thing Hunter hears about her is that she's SHIELD, blonde, a real hot piece of ass—audible quotation marks on that when he repeats it in his inner monologue—and that she took a lot of guys down before someone managed to return the favor. For a minute, he's not very successful at feigning indifference.

It quiets some of his anxiety, when he asks to take the next watch, and sees a stranger tied up in the kitchen.

Out of the context of domesticity, the kitchen is an implicitly threatening room with a lot of weapons of opportunity. They dragged Sharon's chair right to the middle, like an island, to keep her from getting her hands on anything she might use to escape. They've secured her with nylon rope and two sets of handcuffs, one wrist to either chair arm. They couldn't trust one thing or the other to do the job.

Hunter circles once, taking stock before he grabs a beer from the fridge. After, he settles himself in a twin of the chair she's in, aggressively casual, putting his feet up on the small dining table. His thumb ghosts over a recent cut on his eyebrow.

"What kind of SHIELD agent lets herself get captured by the likes of us?" He ventures. It might sound like mockery, but that's not the idea. He's just frustrated because this is lose-lose.

The others want to ransom Sharon back to her employers. Hunter knows better. There's a real chance they won't negotiate. SHIELD's more likely to send in a whole team to rescue one of their own, and that team won't hesitate to neutralize threats. He tried to tell them that.

It'll be better for everyone if she escapes, and quickly. He knows he has to do something to help; on principle, even if it doesn't earn him any quarter with her hypothetical rescuers. He could loosen the knots, at least. He isn't the one with the keys to the handcuffs, but he could get them.

[But seriously: any interest in forming an awkward science genius friendship? Maybe The Government has Ock in captivity and Eph has been charged with getting the low down on Ock's tentacles (due to their parasitic qualities), and if they could be removed, or modified, or useful. Eph could be pre-canon (no vampires, he's just a contentious epidemiologist going through a custody battle), mid-pilot (same as pre-canon except a plane has landed at JFK and everyone on it was mysteriously dead, and then 4 people were suddenly not dead), or if action interests you, canon current (in which case Eph would be all: hey you with the arms, remember me? I'm breaking you to help me fight the vampires there are now because: arms. BTW I am maybe definitely wanted by the FBI for a lot of murder I didn't do). Or something else?]
