Daemon Meme

Welcome to the world of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series, a world in which humans are constantly accompanied by dæmons: the beloved animal embodiments of their inner-selves. Dæmons shift their shapes frequently when people are young but begin to settle into one, fixed, animal form as children reach puberty.

A Few Basic Dæmon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Neither the person or the dæmon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a dæmon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's dæmon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Dæmons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but dæmons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's dæmon without permission is a terrible violation.

How The Meme Works:

Just design a dæmon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muses's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's dæmons and let your dæmons interact.

Really, by all rights, Aodhan should probably have settled by now. Elisha's been very blithe about the whole thing--of course the youngest Ace is one of the oldest unsettled Clubs. There's a poetic justice to it; a sad narrative about clinging to youth.

Eileen hasn't minded it. Yes, shifting has been getting more difficult. Yes, the possibilities are getting much smaller. No, he hasn't been able to turn into anything that can fly in a while, and that's certainly no fun. It doesn't matter. It means she can spend that much longer with Aodhan trailing at her side in the form of any of the various large jungle cats that he can still pull himself into being.

The scratch at Rachel's door which accompanies a rather insistent knock one morning doesn't sound very jungle-cat-like at all. The soft, high-pitched whimper doesn't either.

It's-- understandably so-- not something that was a norm in Narnia. It's something the Pevensies had told tale of, certainly, and their daemons had been proof of the truth of their words. Still, it was another thing completely to read about it in history books and to actually experience it for herself in this world, even if she hadn't quite known "growing up" the entirely different life she'd led.

It's one of those things that, as she watched Caelum circle above them, she can't help but ask Caspian, "Was it this odd for you, having a daemon?"

[ magra is still trying to get used to dat as he is now. so used to him being a being a small church maya, having him settle at long last is a bit of a surprise. having him settled into the philippine eagle is whole other story.

Sam Winchester | Supernatural

[ Sam Winchester was born without a dæmon. In their world, this was completely unheard of, and it instantly set his father on edge, wondering what could be wrong with his son. Growing up, he told all his friends and teachers that is dæmon was a very shy spider that didn't like to leave his pocket to avoid drawing attention to himself, but his lack of a dæmon always made him feel like a freak.

They learned much later that Sam did have a dæmon - it had just been born inside of him rather than outside like everybody else. When Castiel rescued Sam from the Cage, he unknowingly left his soul behind - his dæmon, which Lucifer and Michael had separated from him. After being reunited with his soul, Sam had to learn how to live with it outside his body rather than inside of it.

Ignis is a dark crimson dragon. She is about the size of a tiger, has four legs and a pair of wings. Even though having a dragon dæmon is incredibly rare, that is not the most notable thing about her: she is a creature that has been ripped apart and put back together again, and it shows. Her scales and skin carry innumerable and grotesque scars, and although he may have been beautiful once, she is difficult to look at now. ]

[While he'd never been to hell or had to deal with anything quite like Sam had dealt with, Bucky knew all too well what it was like to be separated from your daemon in a way that wasn't natural; to have you and your daemon both put through the ringer.

His situation had been because of experimentation though and while both he and Nyx had escaped and been on the run since then, things had never quite been the same.

Though it wasn't all bad.

Nyx, a large black german shepherd, was able to wander farther from Bucky than most daemons, giving her a chance to scout areas and be his eyes and ears in places he didn't feel safe going in case someone recognized him. Neither spoke much but communicated through other means and that, in itself, was also odd for most; a lot of the reason they stuck to small towns and the woods.

It was in one of said small towns that Bucky and Nyx encountered demons for the first time and neither were quite sure how to handle it but months on end having to survive on the run had taught them how to fight, if nothing else. So the pair had easily gotten involved in the fray, the large canine keeping her human safe as he attempted to put down some of the odd possessed humans.

Too bad it wasn't that easy.]

She's quiet and observant, but incredibly loyal to both Bruce and her new-found friends. When Bruce transforms into the Hulk, Marie also transforms - into a lioness about the size of a car. ]
