The Haunted Meme

There are ghosts all around, at any time, lingering in places where they died or that were emotionally significant during their lives. Some of them refuse to give up the life they once lived, some have yet to accept that they have died, and some just want revenge against those who are still living.

Wherever you are, whatever you were doing, you've happened across a place where a particularly strong ghost (or maybe more than one?) is lingering. The ghost might try to possess you, using your body to do what it cannot, it might try to torment you in whatever ways it can, or it might just try to attack you. What will you do? Who you gonna call?

HOW IT WORKS:
Leave a comment with your character's name and canon, and your preferences. Remember that the ghosts can possess your character (influencing their actions or outright taking control of them) or torment them (exerting an outside influence or attacking).

Please respect others' preferences when tagging, and if a thread goes somewhere you aren't comfortable, communicate with your thread partner.


1) ANGRY This ghost either died angry or has become so over time. It might want to take out its anger on someone else, make noise, or hit or break things, whether by itself or using your character's body or special abilities.

2) VENGEFUL This ghost wants revenge. Maybe it's against someone who wronged them in life, maybe it's against their murderer, or maybe it's just against the living. They might mistake your character for the target, or use their body to exact their vengeance.

3) REGRETFUL This ghost is much sadder and quieter, consumed by regrets of things unsaid and never done. They might just lurk about and increase the emo factor, or they could drive your character into despair.

4) DEMANDING This ghost wants something done. Maybe they want a message delivered or a hidden treasure found. Or maybe they just want to force your character to compete a task. Whatever it is, they won't stop demanding it until they're satisfied.

5) LUSTFUL Being a ghost gets very lonely. Maybe they want to possess your character to experience the pleasures of the flesh once more. Maybe the ghosts of star-crossed lovers will drive two people together. Or maybe your character might just feel an intangible hand copping a feel...

6) OBLIVIOUS This ghost doesn't realize it's dead. They might resent your character's presence or mistake them for the real ghost. Or they could accidentally inhabit your character's body and try to continue their normal routine.

7) INHUMAN This ghost isn't the spirit of a person, but something else. Maybe an animal, maybe a creature thought to be imaginary, maybe an alien that hitched a ride on a meteor, whatever it was it wasn't normal. And if it possesses your character, neither are they.

[Bringing home ghosts isn't really a rare thing for him.

They come and they go, few of them stay for long-- but he's never entirely joking when he calls his place 'a halfway house for the recently departed'. Not many people can see them, and adjusting alone can be hard at best; Ryan can't always offer help with whatever keeps them stuck on this side, but he can at least offer company and acknowledgment, somewhere to stay without the frustrations of being invisible. It tends to be enough, or at least a good starting point for them.

This one, he's still getting used to.

John's been left a bit to his own devices, allowed to settle in and do as he likes-- the few other spirits there haven't necessarily been avoidant so much as getting used to his presence and trying to see what they make of him, but for the most part they aren't social sorts (something Ryan warned him about.) One never leaves the attic, another's more fond of the upstairs hallway; the grandmotherly one is often found in the living room or kitchen (and is generally the warmest of them), and he's probably seen the ghost of a boy about his own age watching him on occasion before quickly disappearing. Not shy, exactly, but unwilling to approach just yet.

Ryan, for the most part, hangs out either in his basement room or the living room, though he does check up on all of them every so often-- it's what he's doing when he finds John this time, hanging back to watch ghostly flames lap at whatever they touch, flickering just like real ones.]

I mean- I've never known anyone who could do things like that when they were alive, I-- didn't know if it stuck around after they passed. It's new.

[Maybe it's when Gene says he doesn't remember an argument they'd had only an hour or two before that Snafu starts to think something's actually wrong. They'd been fighting about something stupid - Snaf complaining about reinforcements, draining the foxhole properly, getting to know the green replacements, the fucking rain, who cares - and Gene had been more furious than exhasperated and Snaf had sworn and they hadn't talked for an hour afterwards. Their fights aren't the most mature anyway, so it's not like he'd said anything that was different or unusual, but when he doesn't remember it actually happened? That seems like kind of an issue.

Or maybe it's when Snaf sees him a little while later, closer to dusk, not flinching as a mortar lands close by, not even moving as a splatter of mud hits his cheek close to his staring eyes. His face is twisted into an angry, urgent expression and he's picking the skin around his fingernails until it bleeds and hasn't seemed to notice. That sure looks like a warning sign. Maybe he's just finally cracking up completely. It's kind of unsettling. A frown on his face, Snafu gives his arm a shove.]

[Quentin buys the house without realizing it. It's cheap, ridiculously so, and for the kind of work he's doing he needs somewhere big and ancient and private.

Of course, the complexities of his being a practicing magician will lead into a run in pretty abruptly. The IKEA van has barely completed its' drop off before he starts working on wards, real, serious shit. All Quentin is focused on for the time being is erecting enough of a magical barrier around the place that the energies he's planning to work with here won't attract attention from the bodies out there in charge of various forms of magical oversight. Still, when he heats the first iron sigil with a press of his bare, white-hot hands, and curls it into shape, a pulse will go through the house that'll set the hair on end on every single undead neck in the place.

It isn't hostile, this isn't any sort of exorcism, but it will certainly attract attention, as though fresh meat weren't event enough.]

[ A ghost? No, not even close. A ghost would imply there was a soul to linger, to be twisted, and that's something he is all too familiar with. It wasn't even the real him. What wonderful tricks the subconscious could play on an already broken mind--it is fitting that Lucifer would change his appearance to better suit the punishment for the crime.

Failure, isn't that what Castiel was afraid of? Is guilty of?

The mental hospital is anything but an aslyum, especially when some guests couldn't find it in themselves to leave. The torment he inflected on Sam had been personal, and so would this. This lingering image of Sam's time in Hell, a projection of his own desire to be tormented because he inherently believes he deserved it.

Lucifer stands at the window, glancing out between the bars that are really no match for any angel if they cared to do something about it. Castiel accepted his penance. How touching. ]
