MORE THAN PARTNERS


You two are a complimentary duo, a team that many would envy. One leads, the other follows. One offers support or intel or back up to the other, or perhaps even medical help for the other, the beserker or powerhouse. Whatever your cause may be - working for an organization, working for yourselves, adventuring, demon hunting, fighting giants, protecting humanity from rogue alchemists, or just living life in a situation that calls for a "partnership" - you work like a well-oiled machine.

But it's more than partnership. You look out for each other, watch each others' backs. No one will hurt your partner on your watch.

But it's more than that, too. More than anyone can ever know. You two care for one another nearly more than anyone else in the world (or perhaps more "nearly" involved), and you're partners in a different way as well...or, at least, you're dangerously skirting that line.

Even if that's a dangerous game, there's one thing for certain: you can't and won't let any affections and emotions get in the way of making sure they stay safe.

Bruce loves watching Natasha dance she is just so graceful and lovely that it makes his heart hurt to look at her. It reminds him of how lucky he is to work with her, to be close to her.

[ Clint feels like an idiot at least eighty six percent of the time. And that's not a bad thing — he figures you can't play with the big leagues unless you have some kind of anxiety about it, about fitting into everything the right way. The Avengers are a little outside his purview — he's an agent with a neolithic weapon, who trusts gut instincts and decidedly doesn't follow Captain America into heroic battles — but that's who he is now. He's kind of surprised about stuff like that.

Other things that are surprising: Natasha. He meets up with her back in New York after a series of texts that are equal parts coded and not. (Thanks, Hydra.) He has his sunglasses on his head and arms braced on the rail of the balcony, his beer about a third full. The sun's setting. It'd be romantic, or something, if it were any other city than New York.

He doesn't really pretend not to stare. He glances at her sideways, then again as he takes a pull from his beer. A beat, then: ]

There is something really weird about Nageki. He's a ghost or a hallucination or an alien or some kind of not-human, but whenever he's asked about it, he just gets agitated and disappears. That's a talent of his.

But he never disappears for long. He was there from when the new SHIELD moved in, just a random Japanese teenager sitting on the edge of what would become Coulson's desk. No one else sees him. No one else responds to him. But he lurks around the Director's office, even when there's supposed to be top secret information relayed in there. Whenever he's asked to leave, he just gives a blunt, "I was here first. Besides, there's no one who can hear me if I wanted to betray you."

But when he's not just lurking, he's surprisingly helpful. He perches on the edge of the desk and offers (often unasked for) insight on cases. He keeps a careful, invisible eye on everyone who comes in and out of the building. He tells the esteemed director exactly what he thinks without any nostalgia or judgment--"Agent Fitz has started talking to himself. I think he still thinks Agent Simmons is here." "Agent Skye hasn't made progress with writing. She's becoming frustrated." "You should let Agent May supervise another carving session. You're ruining that desk."

Today, Nageki is perched on the edge of the desk again, reading through Donnie Gill's file. He didn't ask before he took it. He never asks. He just leafs through the pages, frowning in concentration.

"Something is bothering me about this."
