[It's been a long time, and the world had changed. Even after the end of the war, the world hadn't gone back to the way it was. New superpowers and impossible technologies had appeared in the world, changing the face of it forever and even as the war and the events of those early days became history, the people involved in them moved on, time went forward.

For the most part.]

[The peaceful afternoon is interrupted abruptly by the loud roar of a motorcycle engine as the vehicle rumbles through the streets before coming to a stop in front of one home in particular. The rider pauses, looking up before switching the engine off and removing her helmet and running a gloved hand through her hair, the red streak in it still as vibrant as it had been years ago. She climbs off the bike, retrieving a small parcel from the case on the back. The small box of cookies might not be much, but she hadn't wanted to make this visit empty-handed.

It really has been a long time since she'd visited this particular friend. Not intentional, it had just sort of happened that way, but as time went on she'd just kind of... backed out of the world. Taking to the roads and eventually settling in a small house away from the cities. It was a hard thing, watching your loved ones age and grow while staying more or less the same herself. Her own aging had all but hit a standstill decades ago, back when she was in her twenties.

Heavy riding boots thud on the walkway as she make her way up to the door, the chain at her side jangling lightly as the pair of scissor blades hanging from it bounce off each other. She pauses for a second before taking a breath and knocking at the door.

To be fair though, Raye Satterfield had changed a lot as the years and decades ticked by.

She looked almost thirty now.]

[Snafu tells himself that it's just going where the good business is. He tells himself that there's more work in Alabama. He tells himself that he's not going to look Sledge up because that part of their life is over - the goddamn war is over and done - and he still thinks that Gene is better off without him. He tells himself that neither of them need or want the reminder of their buddy's faces.

(Most of what he tells himself is a lie.)

He gets to Mobile, pretending that's not where he's been heading all along, but then he gets stuck. It's stupid, sure, but he finds odd jobs to do around the town and he keeps his head down and he just... waits. Maybe for a sign, maybe for what little better judgement he has to kick in, who knows?]

[There was talk of sealing his ability completely. Not something John should know, but Ryan reported it to him after he overheard it in the teachers' thoughts, because he was still such a goddamn good person that he knew John would argue against that and should have his voice heard. They'd both been targets, after all, but John was the main target.

And John would've argued against it. As unpleasant as a mutation/personality combination could get, that person was still born into mutation and no one had the right to take it away. It would've been the final strike against the school, having the Professor play god like that. For the students' protection, mainly his own, or not.

But it never came to that. It turned out that the Professor had a friend who cared just as much about protecting mutants but was not possessed of the same soft heart; he was, however, possessed of a helmet that could block any telepathic suggestion. With those two assets - a firmer hand in dealing with Petre's viciousness and a total invulnerability to his impelling abilities - everyone felt that he could still be given a chance without further endangering the school or forcibly containing the ability within his own mind.

So. He was leaving.

He is leaving, and John is sitting on the front steps as the car holding Petre pulls away, feeling a bit like a soldier at the end of a long and ugly war. He doesn't know how he'll function normally anymore, or even remember how he functioned without the constant pressure and manipulation and, sometimes, near-terror. Part of him is sad, but the further those taillights recede, the clearer it becomes that he was living half-inside and half-outside an illusion; what Petre offered was neither false nor true, it simply didn't exist. He can't mourn an illusion.

Still, he looks small and lost as he sits there with his arms around his knees, considering what on earth is next for him.]
