YOU ARE NOT MY ENEMY
A slave/reluctant master romance(?) meme


The seed of the idea has existed for ages, perhaps as long as there has been the concept of enemies among humanity - so, a long time. It goes as follows:

You are in an unfamiliar and dangerous territory, most likely the home of your enemy. Whether there is a war raging in the background or just barely-bandaged hostility is irrelevant. Your safety does not depend on that. Instead, you are an example. Your freedom is forfeit. A prisoner is what you are...no, you're a slave. And you're given to someone for service or for entertainment.

You're prepared to hate your new "master." Who wouldn't? Slowly, however, you realize that things aren't as they seem. Your master is no cruel owner; in fact, they don't even want to own you. But they are as much of a pawn in this scheme as you are. Still, they show you kindness and their subtle rebellion fans the flames of your own. Over time, your feelings towards them begin to change. It may be some sort of Stockholm Syndrome or it may be a true emotion, yet either way, something fragile and perhaps even beautiful is growing between the the two of you. Could this be love? If it is or if it isn't, there's one certainty: if you are found out, it will be the end, most likely, of you both.

This is the situation your character finds themselves in. Are they master? Slave? How do they accept their fate? Their new feelings towards their "master"/"slave"? All of this is up to you, as well as how this all ends for the pair.

Of course, there's a precedent for it ending badly and bloody, for obvious reasons.

2. Unwilling: Well, "unwilling" is sort of implied in general, but you are especially rebellious and refuse to be tamed. You throw any kindness you receive back in the giver's face. When you begin to feel something for your "master," you reject that as much as you possibly can.

ENDING

1. Good: The idealized, happy ending. You both get away from the system that keeps you chained and live freely together.
2. Bad: The realistic ending. Your little affair is unearthed and your heads end up on the chopping block.

It's been well over two fortnights since he set foot on Westeros, and Bennet still can't get used to it. Not a single shred of it. He's ridden through its highlands, tasted its crops, and killed quite a few of its sons.

If he had his way, he'd kill this one too.

Not for ill will, mind - he bears no grudge against the so-called King in the North. In that, he differs markedly from his company's employers, the House of Lannister. They've already begun demanding the Stark boy's head be sent to King's Landing. Similar requests have been made by the Freys, the Tyrells and even the Karstarks, until recently a vassal house of the Starks themselves. Clearly, Robb Stark had made himself quite a few enemies during his brief tenure as king.

Confirming Robb's death would make matters much simpler for many Westerosi highlords. And that's exactly why the Horsemen will not kill him.

Tywin Lannister thinks them no more than a band of savage sellswords, the so-called Horsemen of Apocalypse. He has no idea what their true purpose in Westerois is. None of them do. But they'll learn, those gilded nobles in their castles. Soon enough they'll learn.

And as for Bennet du Paris, better known to these people as Exodus, he has been given their leader. A reward for his valor on the field, granted by En Sabah Nur himself.

The youth is brought to him in chains, beaten but unbowed. Apocalypse's expects him to break the boy's spirit, to make this Stark boy the first highlord to learn their creed, but he can see just by the fire in the boy's eyes that will be no easy task. He is bloodied, bruised, but still he fights.

Exodus lifts his hand to forestall the guards from damaging his new slave any further.

"That will be enough. Leave us."

The men throw Robb Stark, not at all gently, to the tent floor and leave as instructed. Bennet crosses the space between them, wanting a better look at this so-called Young Wolf.

The "gift" arrived on a Friday afternoon with a perfunctory note: "Best regards, Uncle." Shackled and scuffed and dirty, he was dumped onto Haru's beautifully woven blue and indigo rug by a pair of men that he recognized well enough to understand what was happening even before he'd opened the envelope that one of them handed him and saw his uncle's seal on the back.

From his spot on his divan, Haru raised his eyes to look over the top of the note to the impressively built young man who was, even now, leaving traces of sand and dust on the hitherto spotless floor. His very first thought was that he looked miserably dry. Probably he had been brought straight from the caravan depot, carted through the streets under the searing desert sun, and who knew what would have been done to him before that. More than likely, he'd been captured in a raid, though he could just as easily have been taken on a battlefield somewhere.

It wasn't an inconsequential thing, being given the gift of a slave. It was a new experience for Haru, but everyone knew what it meant whether it had happened to them or not: to be a slaveholder elevated one's social standing considerably. To be given a slave as a gift meant that a person had a benefactor who was looking after them in the highest order. Status as a slaveholder was more valuable than any amount of money (of which Haru already had plenty); it was even more valuable than that most precious commodity: water (of which Haru also had more than most). But having a slave also came with some substantial expectations for conduct and behavior. Not least of all was the expectation that slaves be used thoroughly, properly, and on a regular basis. Failure to do so was tantamount to treason.

It made the whole proposition a lot more troublesome than it was worth, as far as Haru was concerned. It made no difference what he thought though: this was not a gift that he was at liberty to decline.

Haru folded the note and slipped it back into its envelope before slowly getting to his feet. He was almost loath to touch his new charge, hyper-aware that he would be doing so in total disregard of what the man might want. From here on out, what his slave wanted or didn't want was (at least formally) to be a matter of complete irrelevance and this first touch was meant to establish the paradigm.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Haru was already imagining the powdery dryness of the dust that coated the man all over--the "gift" his uncle had given him was a bit of a fixer-upper, evidently.

Haru stepped closer, the loose, open robe he wore revealing his bare midriff below a form-fitting shirt, and the billowing material of pants practically showing the lines of his legs through loose white muslin. With one hand he waved the pair of attending guards away, adding emphasis as he had to repeat the gesture when they seemed reluctant to leave him alone with a new, and possibly rebellious, slave.

Only when they were gone did he reach down and tug the gag free of his slave's mouth, offering him a waterskin to drink from. Haru had to hold it for him, since his hands were still bound, but he gave him a chance to drink his fill, a rare opportunity in a land where water was so precious and carefully guarded.

"What's your name?" he asked finally when the man was done drinking--a request, not a demand. It seemed like too much trouble to bluster around and try to force things, after all. Better to avoid that if he could.
