The "Adopted" Sibling or Child Meme

They say blood is thicker than water. Family is everything. But what about the family you choose, the ones that aren't necessarily bound to you by shared blood? Sometimes, they can be closer than anyone you're just related to through chance. You chose them, after all!

This person in particular is someone you're closer to than almost anyone; it's more than friendship, it's darn near familiar. No, more than darn near, it is familial. They may be younger than you, maybe even by a considerable margin, but they may not be. They could just seem that way, in their innocence or vulnerability. You want to protect them more than anything, keep them close, and spend time with them so their life can be improved by whatever you can do.

Officially or unofficially, you've adopted them as your own. Your family, with you as an older sibling or parent figure. This could make things better for them...or worse.

Mary Marvel, also known to the superhero community as Mary Batson, is a fairly optimistic person on a normal day. Today is not one of those days. Today Doctor Sivana just destroyed the people she called her parents since she was five.

Yes, others died too but what really struck her was that she was alone again. She still hadn't found her twin brother Billy. She was so sure he was alive out there but she just couldn't feel much hope right now.

Mary contacted a few of the others in the League. She wanted them to know they wouldn't have a heavy hitter for a while.

The last person she contacts is Batman. She needs advice.

"Batman. This is Mary Marvel," her voice cracks slightly over the communicator. "I need some advice. Are you available?"

Batman should be the last person anyone in a vulnerable emotional position should call, or want to call. He doesn't exactly have what most would consider a comforting presence.

Which is why when she calls him, even without having been caught up on details, he's surprised. Not enough for it to show in his voice, but it's there. "I am. Where are you?"

"Outside of Gotham. I... couldn't stay in Fawcett City tonight," she admits. She sounds younger than she appears to be.

"Doctor Sivana he...." She had once mentioned the mad genius. Her greatest foe really given that he was as clever as she was if she was properly channeling Minerva.

"It's bad." She failed. Maybe Superman would be better to turn to right now but Mary needs someone who is more realistic than herself and Superman. If anyone is realistic on the League it would be Batman or maybe Green Arrow.

"Stay where you are. I'll be there in a matter of moments." And would bring her home if it came to that, because he's not exactly a comforting presence, he is overly pragmatic, he can be harsh and he can seem cold.

But he isn't a bad person and he certainly isn't actually unfeeling.

He doesn't even break the communications link with her, just leaves it open while he (quickly) gets dressed, into his car and drives - fast. Not talking to her exactly, but silently there.

"I'll need to land." Which she really shouldn't be flying right now. She knows she is a bit too emotional to notice the important things. She almost hit a helicopter while on her way here. She feels bad about that.

Mary lands. It should be easy for Batman to find her. She shivers slightly even with her invulnerability she can't shake the cold feeling that settled over her. She wasn't felt this bad in years.

"I'm up on that water tower just on the west end right before the exit leading to Gotham." She would normally enjoy the view but she went there because it was practical.

"Be careful." Was all he has to say about her landing. Emotions have a way of getting in the way of the physical, and though he trusted her ability she was clearly not all right at the moment.

When he made his way to the tower he parked and did the practical thing himself. He climbed it. He could have used a grappling hook and hauled himself up, but it wasn't that much faster and climbing gave her more warning and time to prepare.

When he swung himself over the railing he moved to where she was and said, simple and direct: "Talk to me." It might even have been some kind of demand, because hell if he knew how not to be demanding.

"He placed a series of bombs all over the city. I was able to use some of my speed to get there quickly. I was able to get most of them," Mary starts her tale.

"I was late to getting the last three. They were clustered together and..." She takes a deep breath. "Four hundred and eighty six people."

Dead, given her tone. The way her voice cracks. "My adopted parents were there."

Her parents are dead again. "And I...I'm not really as old as I look. It's the powers. I transform into how I'll look when I'm grown."

Meaning she's a kid really.

Bruce isn't loquacious. He isn't demonstrative. He isn't good with children The proof of that is in those children he's tried and failed to care for. Both Billionaire and Batman are constructs - smoke, mirrors and theatrics. He is emotionally stunted. He isn't good with grief, including his own.

What he isn't, is a robot or psychopath. He is perfectly capable of empathy - and compassion. He'll fail, but there's no one else here right now, and he isn't going to leave her. He has to try.

He listens to her in silence, then reaches up and pulls his cowl off. Runs a hand through his hair and then reaches to his throat and unfastens his cape, and drops it around her shoulders. It's heavy and warm. Commissioner Gordon gets credit for him thinking of that.

"I'm sorry. It isn't your fault."

Mary is glad for something besides her cape. It doesn't do her much good. Her uniform wasn't exactly made for American weather. The Wizard Shazam had originally been from Egypt after all.

"Batman?" She blinks a bit like an owl. Well, more like a startled deer perhaps. Batman taking off his cowl is unusual. The only other member of the JLA who is very public happens to be Wonder Woman. Diana has never really cared for hiding who she is. It goes against the Amazon's mission.

"I keep trying to tell myself that. Sivana is... not a stable person." She hates the words crazy or insane but they do fit the man. No sane person sets out to bomb a city the way Sivana did.

The cowl's purpose is disguise, but also to intimidate and frighten. There's no one here to see him, and he trusts that she'll keep it to herself. Not that she's the only member to know his identity.

"Sivana is insane." He doesn't have a problem with the word, clearly. "How many would have died if all the bombs had gone off?" It was rhetorical - more, many more, was the obvious answer. "How old are you?" Actually, legally.

...He works on solutions and information more than feelings. The loan of his cap and removal of his cowl is his emotional reaction and just about the best he can do with it for the moment.

Mary would never betray Batman's trust. She came to him because she trusts him and is a firm believer that trust has to go both ways. He needs to be able to trust her.

Mary has to do the numbers. "... A lot. He doesn't do things by half."

She doesn't want to verbalize how many people could have died. "I just turned fifteen."

No, he doesn't do things by half. He's about to half Batman coming down on his head, though, which could make things interesting. Killing people is bad. Killing kids' parents strikes a personal chord.

"You can come home with me, today. I'll make some phone calls tomorrow morning."

[She walks over to a tree, swings at it with an open arm that changes into an actual metal scythe, changing back after it hits, then follows with the other arm, hops back and glares at it, the entire tree exploding in a fireball.]

"That's just something small, Emeralda could also call Crescens, but there isn't enough space."

[ the poor guy called knows better than to get insulted by being called something with half a brain, but he still looks terrified as he steps up. ]
