[Auron can't remember very much at all by the time he reaches the Ninth Precinct, but some strong compulsion keeps him from staring down that final gate. it's that same compulsion that prompts him to turn around and begin walking backwards, back towards a world he probably doesn't have any place in now.

his travels are slow, ponderous, but inexorable. it doesn't matter if he actually has the power to overcome these trials - he needs to return. there is no other option. almost as if in some cruel reward for his perseverance, memories come filtering back with his progress, splashes of pain and blood and a resounding feeling of failure. it hurts more than anything he's navigating in this river.
