The air smelled of smoke and death, a silence of exhaustion and cautious optimism descending over everyone. Their victory came at a heavy price, bodies of friends and family still strewn about, leaving the victors dazedly collecting what they could. They had won, though, and that gave the people a charge of happiness until they looked upon a familiar face and started to cry.

War was hell, and winning still hurt.

Sasuke was kneeling in the dirt, drained, pained, blood running down his face as he could barely keep his eyes open; they burned as if some horrible mixture of salt, dirt, lemon juice and acid had filled them. He used too much of everything, he knew it, but it had been necessary. It had been needed. He had protected his brother’s dream, and in turn, helped a team he had dismissed so long ago.

Now, if he could just stand up, that would be helpful. But he was spent, at his limit and beyond, and before he knew it, he fell into the dirt. He had enough energy to roll onto his back and stare at the sky before he closed his eyes. Dammit. Someone would probably be by soon, would either try to kill him, “save” him, or talk to him, and he was too weak to stop either. His tattooed palm twitched against the ground, frustrated at his own humanity.

[ Let's not go into the messy details of the hows and whys, because frankly. she doesn't want to talk or think about it right now. She made a series of decisions that may or may not have been influenced by alcohol, and that's as much detail as we're willing to go into. To her credit, when the world itself is ending, there's a bit of "well, why the hell not?" that seems to apply for once in her life, even if she knows better.

But the point of the story is that Sam Winchester finds herself doing things that aren't, well, very angelic and perhaps saying things that one shouldn't.

With so many thoughts running through her head, it's unsure of what slipped out was "I love you", "I need another drink", or "I need to pee". Maybe some awful combination that doesn't make her situation any better.

[It started out as a 'this is ONE time, that's it' sort of thing between Sarah and Dean, but then it took its own kind of course. It wasn't 'friends with benefits' or anything of the like, but there was something there between the two of them. Whether either of them wanted to admit it was a completely different story. Sarah preferred to keep her distance and handle her shit on her own. But there was something about Dean that made her give in and talk to him, telling him a secret or two before they started to kiss, make out and promise it was another 'one time' thing.

They were about to go at it again, ready to give into their desires and let their desires take control when those three little words slipped out. She wasn't sure if it came from her, him, or if it was even heard. Maybe it was the radio crooning some stupid love song. That had to be it, right?]

Wow.

It had been a surprise to watch the suit explode, and it didn't take him long to process that Vanko really had killed himself in the process of trying to take out both himself and Rhodey. Two for one, sure - but they had enough flight left in the both of them to get out of the blast range.

Where ever Rhodey had gone.

Which left him with only one thought. Pepper.

One smooth gesture had him flying off toward the expo, there were imploded suits everywhere - a few buildings collapsed, and he vaguely hoped that their evacuation plans were well thought out. There were certainly enough people on the ground to assume the best.

Oh, and there - in a less densely populated part of the Expo grounds, he can to a stop at the bottom of the long, sloped staircase, dropping to the floor beside the wreckage of an imploded drone. It got a frown from him, and he kicked at the shell of an arm, unsure if he could look up towards where he knew Pepper stood - eventually, the face plate of his suit came off and he let it hang from his hand, loose at his side, turning his head just enough to barely glance up at her.

"Still on your feet."
