So, again, I must ask you: what do you get out of defying me so? If I were to discard you like yet another useless pawn, how much would that sting?

What sort of question is that? It would go far beyond stinging to making life near impossible on my end.

[The request earns a look that quite seriously indicates that this line of questioning is far from fair, considering the situation. For all his seeming openess, he does keep much to himself. And he'll even try not to answer for a moment, before having to.]

How many people do you believe remain steady over time, of which actually recall me? No matter if they can cross in or out of the stream of consciousness, there is no easily accessible memory of who I am.

[Well, even with a truth serum, it's obvious chaos still speaks in partial riddles, leaving a lot for the other man to fill in on his own.]

Isn't that why you maintain such friction between us? Intentionally or not, you do want to remain relevant to me, don't you? You want to be treated as an equal?

No, that is not why the friction is maintained. That is merely because we do not agree on the path to be taken. But yes, I do wish to remain "relevant," if that's how you wish to put it, but I am already your equal.

[Wilhelm really can't get that pleased, mocking smile off of his face.]

[It's good sometimes when a question isn't elaborated on. Although if Wilhelm keeps pushing it, chaos may elaborate something else; like trying to smack him. Really, Wilhelm's the only person he knows who can break his usually reserved self.]

[The look on chaos' face sort of implies Wilhelm might have just broken his brain, just a little. After all, what sort of question is that? And does he actually have to answer?

Well, he may have to, but Wilhelm's going to get a mumbled answer so he can't actually hear it. Two can play games.]

[The question is open to interpretation, to an extent, but there's still something downright dangerous about it. Wilhelm does like to play for keeps.]

[There's a small glare at the request. And yes, the question may be open to interpretation, but there's enough meanings that the answer will be the same without an expansion on which meaning Wilhelm means.]

[He sort of wonders what answer Wilhelm expects, even as he considers the question. Wilhelm knows chaos has always been far more human than him. It's why he hates the role he was assigned so badly; he is human, while not human, and close to all of them, but none of them at all.

Indeed, there are only a few of whom he could say he is entirely close to, and Mary has been at rest for a long time. Although, that doesn't answer the question, does it? Actually, he doesn't seem to find an answer, even thinking on it.]

I don't think I do. Not in how some people might.

[Wilhelm is contained in a human avatar as much as chaos is. He is not an abstract concept. And, whether or not he wants to admit it, he cares about humanity enough to attempt to save them from themselves.]

Then why didn't you want me to hear?

[chaos would never question Wilhelm's desire to save humanity. He understands it, respects it, they just happen to usually be on different sides in how they wish to handle it.

Yet there are things chaos cannot understand, and will not use any power to understand, about the other man. One such thing is the entire depth of emotion he knows is hidden. And so he returns the question with a question.]

Would you wish to answer such a question so openly, if it were presented to you?

[For now, to no one's surprise, Wilhelm seems unwilling to admit anything about himself. chaos will just have to wait his turn.]

[Well, that actually wouldn't surprise him. No matter how good his mask, someone who is trained to see into the eyes would notice many things cross his.

And though he doubts he'll get an answer, he asks.]

[It's one of the few things wherein Wilhelm can interpret chaos accurately. He's had plenty of practice with it over the years.]
