He'd stopped to examine a selection of peaches, when he'd noticed the dark haired young woman. She seemed familiar to him, but he wasn't sure why, so he found himself watching her. Moving through the crowd as she did, trying to place where he would know her from or if he even knew her at all.
He came to a sudden stop, when she abruptly turned, as if she could feel his eyes on her. His expression was one of someone who was mildly startled, but not overly concerned with having been caught following her. He tilted his head to the side, making eye contact.
A few quick steps and he was directly in front of her, looking down at the strangely familiar woman.]
I am Archangel Michael. Do we know one another?
no subject
Which failed when he introduced himself, her jaw dropping.]
Wouldn't you remember?
[The words tumble out before and she clamps a hand over her mouth. She can feel heat rushing to her face as she waves a hand, doing to her best to look properly contrite.]
Sorry, words are not always my friends. Ah... [Try as she might, staying calm seemed a slippery task, made all the more difficult by the feeling that she should know him and the way he stared.]
I'm Victoria and as far as I know, this is the first time we've met, Archangel.
no subject
[If Michael had been the type to be more facially expressive, he would have smiled at her flustered attempts to converse with him.
Her flushed cheeks only adding to the amusement he felt with the entire situation.]
It's a pleasure to meet you, Victoria.
[His eyes narrowed slightly, scanning her face, and his head tilted to the side. The visual assessment of her as one final endeavor to glean a small hint of meaning behind why she seemed familiar to him. Michael nodded, taking a small step backwards.]
I find I must agree with you. I may have seen you here.
[A small sweeping motion of his eyes over the market.]
no subject
[Another flustered wave of the hand before she catches on and brings it to her chest. She wondered if he'd laugh were he human. Still, she smiles and inclines her head in a respectful nod.]
And you, Archangel Michael.
[Her cheeks pink further, her blush creeping down to her chest as he studies her and despite the echo of 'it's rude to stare', she stares back. He looked so human, just impossibly still and poised.
He moves away and she's oddly disappointed. It takes her a moment to formulate an answer.]
Most likely. I doubt you'd be a visitor to my aunt's cafe. Or Cloudland.
[She looks away, drawing in a deep breath and sighing, trying to ease her nerves. She was only shy because of who he was. Not because he felt so very familiar.]
So what brings you to the market on this day?
no subject
Michael's eyes watched the flush deepen, moving from her cheeks to expand across her neck and chest. They stared at each other a moment, before her words struck him as peculiar.]
Cloudland?
[He skipped over the bit where she mentioned her aunt's cafe. He'd been in a few before, but never one located within Vega. It was the mention of a place called Cloudland that he found interesting.
She looked away from him, and Michael's eyes traced the curve of her jaw. Familiarity washing over him again, but, in a way, not from her physical appearance, rather, from something inside of her.]
I came to purchase peaches for a friend.
[He'd actually been wondering the market streets looking for another angel. He needed to find out if the angels hiding within Vega were joining him in his fight against Gabriel, or going to leave the city. Michael couldn't tell her that of course, as nobody knew there were other angels in Vega besides himself.]
And what brings you here?
no subject
Yes, it's a club. There's musicians, performers. Sometimes I host evenings, sometimes I dance.
[The question is enough to make her at ease. Cloudland was almost a form of escape, a collaboration between creators that gave what they could to make something special. The thought alone brought a smile. She looks back at him, nodding. Okay. A friend was unexpected.]
I needed to get a few things for the cafe. I already got most, should be delivered soon. Now I'm just... wandering.
[And for some madde reason, he hoped he would spare some time to wander with her. She didn't want him leaving.]
no subject
[He'd witnessed a variety of dancing styles over his many years, and was curious as to what kind of dancer she was.]
Wandering. Does that require company?
[Michael was still caught on the familiarity of her, and didn't want to end their conversation just yet. He gestured towards a nearby vendor's stall.]
I have years of experience that may help you with your selections.
[A smile small accompanying his play on words.]
Just as I head for bed. :P
[She'd been raised on it by one of the women working in the cafe, Sharon. Sharon's daughter Alena was Victoria's closest friend.
Her eyes widen a little at the question before she grins.]
As a matter of fact, yes, yes it does. It really isn't wandering unless you have company.
[The smile seemed so natural, she felt almost proud to have drawn the expression out. Victoria nods.]
I have no doubt. Please, lead on.
Sorry, stupid work got in the way. :(
[He shook his head, smiling at what he'd previously told her. His years of experience doing nothing for him now.]
Good. Then, if you don't mind.
[Michael extended his arm, gesturing for her to take it. His gaze settled on her mouth, the smile she was aiming at him, sweet and unforced. He turned them, directing her towards the stall he'd pointed to a few moments ago.
He was finding the new company to be taking his mind off of more pressing matters, and that he was relieved for it.]
Thats okay!
[She gave a half shrug.]
At the very least entertaining. [She hoped he'd go to watch, hoped he'd like what he saw.
Accepting his arm, she couldn't help but note how firm the flesh was beneath his coat sleeve. As she followed his lead, she told herself to get a grip. There was no need to feel so light headed. He was only...
Oh. Right. The Archangel Michael.
Clearing her throat and she switched mental streams and turned her attention to the produce in front of them.]
So how can you advise me on apples?
no subject
[He nodded, fully excepting her invitation to watch. And if the timing was right for them both, he hoped it would be soon.
Michael interpreted the way she held his arm, and cleared her throat, for exactly what it was. His lips quirking up at the thought, but he took her cue and spoke of the fruits in front of them.]
The red ones are nice.
[He was sure she would find his response humorous and that she would be able to call him out for his small lie. He didn't have any real knowledge of produce, just wanted to accompany her on her trip, both which were glaringly obvious now.]
So are the green ones.
[A light chuckle.]
no subject
[Nervous as she was, this was nice. She plucked a red apple from the pile just as he spoke and paused. Oh you cheeky bugger.
She turned her face towards his, one dark brow arched, the very image of scepticism. Which of course was when he finished his joke. Her straight face crumbled and Victoria laughed.]
Right, of course. And the last time you tasted an apple was when?
[She put the fruit back, shaking her head and smiling. If he kept this up, she'd be in real trouble.]
Cheeky bugger.
no subject
[His voice was thoughtful, mentally flicking through what he was supposed to be doing then. Nothing. Alex would be busy with his Archangel Corps duties, so Michael would have no pressing matters that night.]
Then, I'd love to come.
[Surely it wouldn't be too odd for the angel to be found, inside Cloudland, watching her perform, right?]
I honestly couldn't say when I've last had an apple. Food is more for taste than sustenance with angels. and apples aren't the food that appeals to me most.
[An idea for a small game came to him, so he stopped them, his hand clasping over hers.]
Guess. Guess what is.
no subject
Then you're most welcome to come. I'll even put you on the guest list.
[It could be, but Cloudland goers were fairly secretive and yet open minded. Also filled with shadowy corners.]
I... Did not know that. [Obviously, but she was enchanted with the idea that he could enjoy taste.]
Seriously? Hmm. [She wasn't a fan of guessing games, but his hand over hers and his earnest gaze was enough to convince her. Turning her head back to where he'd been when she set eyes on him, she tried recalling some detail that could give her a hint. She glanced back at him, biting her lips as she thought.]
Is it a fruit?
no subject
A part of being immortal, I suppose.
[Though how it all worked was strange to him as well. They could be wounded, and killed, but their bodies didn't age, or require food to survive. Yet, they still felt basic needs similar to those that humans felt.]
Sure, why not. [To her question on playing the game.]
No, but it is sweet.
[His eyes went to her mouth, again, as she nipped at it in thought. His thumb moved across her knuckles, his attraction to her increasing the longer they were together. Michael smiled, giving her a little help with guessing.]
and dark in color.
no subject
She gave a soft chuckle and nodded. Sweet, she bit her lip again, only just catching the way he stared at her lips. Her breath caught in her throat and she felt a shiver pass down her spine. Unconsciously she gave his arm a squeeze.]
Sweet and dark. [She repeated, and for a moment she was distracted by the question of how his lips would taste. And then she blinked, the answer coming out of nowhere.]
Chocolate? [Victoria hoped she was right, wanted to be right. Heaven's help her.]
no subject
[It wasn't hard to guess, as it was a popular item. Even with it being so rare now.]
It's unfortunate that it is so hard to find anymore.
[The war had changed so much of human life, the years reverting most of the civilization back to an older way of living. The one big advance, or rather, what hadn't reverted backwards, was their power source.
They still lived in houses, had cities, but the food sources were limited and generally stuck to the main essentials. Fruits and vegetables that could be grown in this climate, or in the greenhouses, were easier to find. Whereas the coca beans needed to make chocolate weren't as easily acquired.]
What's yours?
[It was a simple game they were playing, getting to know each other without really getting to know one another. He tugged her arm, pulling her into the busy market. There were more people on the streets today than was typical, but he didn't mind.]
no subject
[None the less, she was pleased to be right and found it oddly reassuring that he enjoyed something so normal.]
You're telling me. Last time I had any was... Five years ago.
[As a child of this new world she only had the memories and stories of those old enough to have seen the change. Music, arts, something called the internet, politics that weren't a class based dictatorship...
Utterly unknown to her.
Michaels question draws her from her thoughts. Her gaze moves back to his face.]
Hmm, should I make you guess? [Allowing him to lead her through the crowd, she spared a thought for how many eyes could be watching. But another look at his face, the feel of him right beside her, his hand over hers, she couldn't find the will to care.]
It's sweet. Very sweet.
no subject
Apples?
[He was teasing her, continuing the joke he'd made previously. Michael was curious as to what it was, and, feeling up to the task, made further inquiries to help him with the game.]
Another hint? Fruit, pastry?
[They stopped when an older woman approached them. His grip tightened over her hand, always assuming each person he met was a threat. Michael couldn't be too careful, especially after discovering that there were dangerous angels in the city. And that he wouldn't be able to recognize them immediately.
He sighed in relief when she merely offered his companion a flower.]
no subject
[She grinned at him just the same, delighted at the discovery of his humour, smiling wide enough that the tips of her canines cleared her lips. Her longer and pointier than average canines.]
Not a fruit. But it's sticky.
[She stilled when his grip tightened, glancing from the angel to the old woman. She looked harmless enough, couldn't sense anything out of the ordinary. In contrast to hesitation, she smiled immediately, taking the flower with a warm smile and a 'thank you'.
As the woman went on her way, she lifted the bloom to her nose to take in it's scent. Sweet, pretty and delicate. Her head canted to the side so she could see his face and offered the flower for him to smell. ]
A little tense? [The question is quiet, bourne of genuine concern.]
no subject
[It came naturally to him, being suspicious of everyone. Michael knew that it wasn't good to worry so much, but he could never shake the feeling that something was going to happen.
That probably had to do with the threat his brother imposed on him, more than anything else.
He leaned forward, gently breathing in the floral aroma. It was a lovely scent, one that made him realize that he hardly took the time to indulge in the simpler things. Walking around without a destination, smelling flowers, the sort of stuff that could so easily take away his stress.]
It's hard not to be so wary of everything.
[He didn't want to burden her with his own troubles, so he steered their conversation back to favorite foods.]
I feel inadequate with this game. Is it candy? I fear I do not know.
[His face was stern, the smile having faded away to be replaced with a thoughtful expression.]
no subject
[She knew paranoia, she'd spent so much time with it wrapped around her like a second skin. One always had to be careful in this new world, especially with secrets like hers. She gave his arm a gentle squeeze, attempting to be reassuring with the angel, where with anyone else, she'd envelope them in a hug.
Her lips quirk as he indulges her whimsy.]
Believe me, I understand.
[She chuckled.]
Sorry, mine's kind of vague. It's honey. [She twirled the flower between her pale fingers.]
no subject
[It was softly spoken, and more of an awed statement, than it was a question. There weren't many who could understand what it was like, and it pleased him that she did. Though, his sense of righteousness typically made everything he did, and went through, feel like it was all worth it.
Michael didn't mind the way she squeezed his arm, finding the contact comforting.]
Honey. Naturally sweet, just like you.
[It wasn't the most eloquent compliment, but it was genuine. He smiled, moving to the side to let a group of children pass them. He made a mental note to find out later why the market was so abnormally busy today.
They were pressed closer together, having had to in order to to make room for the group of bustling youngsters. His hand had released hers during the movement, finding a comfortable place to rest on the small of her back. It was a gesture made unconsciously, but showed that he was feeling content in her presence.]
no subject
[And she was. She may not have the whole of humankind to care for, but she had brought life into this world, she'd fought to protect it and others. One solace of her condition, she was strong enough to survive and do more. Heat rose to her cheeks at his tone and she looked away, bashful at the sincere compliment.]
Same could be said of you. [A pause. Why the hell not?]
And handsome too.
[She stepped to the side with him, smooth and graceful. She watched them go, a fond light in her eyes.
Finding herself nestled against him was surprising, but welcome and she found herself almost leaning into his solid frame. He was so warm.]
no subject
[He wasn't embarrassed, but he wasn't used to such compliments. Most were too afraid to speak to him, let alone say something so bold. His hand moved a little, his fingers gently rubbing.]
Then, I would say the same to you. But a more appropriate word might be engaging. Or fair.
[The last word was used from it's archaic form, not to state that she had light hair like the more recent use of it, but that she was a beautiful woman.
Michael pushed into her back lightly, signaling for her to walk forward with him. He didn't move his hand when they started through the crowd, preferring its current location.]
Perhaps you would like to sit somewhere? Speak with one another without all the noise and commotion of the market.
