They were on your front door, in your yard, or on the street, confused and clearly in no position to fend for themselves; in a worst case scenario, they were bruised and battered, possibly close to death. Bleeding heart or not, you can't just be so cruel as to let them suffer. They need a place to stay, and you'll open your home to them...long enough to get back on their feet, anyway.

Speaking of feet, the shoe could be on the other one. You're worse for the wear - in a new place, possibly injured, certainly not in the best state of mind. You could not even remember how you got here or who you are to get here, for that matter. You may not want to remember. Whether willing or not so willing, you're in no position to turn down help, especially if said helper won't take no for an answer. No matter how dedicated you are to looking after yourself, there's only so much you can do in your position.

The two of you are staying together, at any rate. Only for a while, the plan is. But after said while, even though strength and confidence is returning to the injured, there's something a little different between you two. It could be the close quarters, the kindness shown, or a number of things, but quietly, softly, feelings have grown. Could more confusion and hurt spring from this? What about when it's time to go? Can the temporary resident leave as easily as they intended? You're so close now, perhaps a little while longer can't do any harm...

...until whatever it was that put them in such a perilous position in the first place comes back, and there could be "justice" for anyone who's dared to help.

... I mean more along the lines of how if I can sense that kind of thing, or if I hear anything. I'm not gonna hang around you all the time, we would drive each other nuts.

[Then she pauses as she eats some more.] Just recite Psalms at them. You saw how well that worked on me.

[Okay she can't making some kind of comment. But since she and ghosts share the same weaknesses, that would work.]

Will you notice it if you're sleeping? ...hmm, I didn't know that reciting bible verses would work on them, though. If I were to go and do that, would it chase them all out of cryogenic storage?

[Because he'll get his bible and preach for an entire day to work toward that cause.]

... I can hear ghosts in my sleep better than when I'm awake. If anything happens while I'm asleep, I'm very likely to hear it.

[Then she just simply shakes her head, taking another sip of water.] Nope, probably not. If you made their bodies move, they're stuck. All it'll do is hurt them and probably make them mad.

Would it drive out the ones who aren't attached to moving bodies, though? I could send out the reanimated corpses. I'd really rather not deal with that again...

[Though he could also move all his zombies out and invite Lapis in to get rid of any lingering ghosts. That could work too...]

... It should drive them out, but that wouldn't stop them coming back if they were mad enough at you. Which they probably are.

[She leans back in her chair and crosses her arms, her expression even as she thinks.] Why can't I just go in and speak to the ones that aren't attached?

[Because... he doesn't like people in there, that's why! Ryan eats to avoid speaking, thinking the matter over. With some maneuvering he could get all the reanimated corpses out of sight, then Lapis could drive the spirits out for him.]

...very well. I'll need some time to set up.

[At least she doesn't press him to answer right away, instead waiting until he responds, absently rearranging shapes with the mushrooms before eating them, her eyes flicking back over to him at his answer.]

... Mm, alright then. When you're ready, just let me know. [She finishes the rest of her water, clearing her throat since it still felt dry, and then goes back to eating.]

Do you want people to be sent away, though? What if they can help too? I guess you can't answer me right now, though.

[Not that Ryan looks particularly conversational. He's already thinking about how he's going to have to put his machine back together and just deal with its inconsistencies if he'll be dragging Lapis in to talk to who knows how many ghosts. He's definitely not letting her go in there alone, anything could happen. She could try to torch all the bodies, for one.]

[While Lapis doesn't respond to Julie, she does tighten her grip around her fork; the only reason she wasn't pushing for Julie to leave is because she seemed so adamant about helping. She doesn't want others to stay here if they really do want to pass on, it wasn't fair. But logically, she does need the help, but she doesn't want to keep them here if she can help it...

She pushes herself to eat a bit more, but for once she doesn't eat everything, too absorbed in her thoughts, and she simply goes to wrap the plate of leftovers in foil and places it in the oven so that she can eat it later.]

... I'm going to go lay down for a bit. [She isn't tired, but she wants to think for a bit, and so she gets onto her bed and flops back, staring at the ceiling, her expression having been stuck in a sort of eerie calmness the entire time.] ... If they want to help, I can't force them to go. But I don't like the idea of you or any others staying when you don't want to be here.

[It's a quiet remark to Julie, pretty much a whisper, since she doesn't want to alert Ryan.]

[Lapis' behavior leaves Ryan feeling oddly put out. They'd been getting along somewhat better, and he thought that releasing those two souls and giving her some company would put her in a good mood. Instead it seems to have made her somehow on edge. He doesn't comment as she leaves the room.

Julie floats right after her, figuring Lapis wants privacy so they can talk. She settles down to sit next to her head, having an easier time looking like she's interacting with objects and surfaces now that she's bonded to a medium.]

That's true. It wouldn't be good to make people stay if they didn't want to. But I can tell them about it if you want, so you can bond with them without having to say you can do it.

[Even if he commented, she wouldn't know what to say. Maybe it's because of that dream, or all these plans, but she feels anxious. It's not something she's enjoying, and she rubs her face with her hands again.

She does peek up at Julie when she settles near her, sighing heavily enough that her feathers ruffle.]

... I suppose. But then there would be the issues of Ryan's machines, they would pick up on that and he would get even more suspicious. He knows you're here so that's not a problem, but the bonding makes a spike in energy occur, so that would be an issue if I bonded with more spirits.

Ohhh, that stupid machine! I hope he broke it when he took it apart!

[The girl kicks her feet animatedly, huffing and puffing. Seems like Julie has a little bit of a temper. She was cooped up for most of her life though, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that she gets impatient and sometimes throws small fits.]

[Lapis can't help but chuckle quietly, despite how she still felt a bit sluggish. She doesn't mind the temper, especially since Lapis has a very nasty one herself when pushed, which Ryan had seen before when she lashed out at him.]

... Maybe if we're lucky. Or we could try to overload it somehow and make it explode when it's back together.

Do you think I could do that? Ghosts can do stuff with electricity, can't they?

[Julie is all too willing to break machines. She wouldn't want to possess anyone, though. That's a step too far, she'd feel like she was hurting someone... and she doesn't want to hurt anyone directly, not even Ryan.]

... Mmhm, you certainly could. It would take some concentrating, but you would be able to do that.

[Lapis and Julie share the same ideas, then. Though for Lapis, the very idea of physically hurting someone tends to make her panic, but luckily she hasn't had this happen yet and she would like to keep it that way.]

[Her face lights up when Lapis says she could do that. She could actually be useful beyond just delivering messages!]

I should do it right now, then! Before he puts it totally back together.

[It's easier to mess it up when it's in pieces, right? And it probably won't make a big explosion either. She doesn't think she wants it to explode.]

... Ah, wait. If you do it now, he might end up focusing on trying to fix it and not let me go into that room. [Which would be annoying, especially since she really wants to go in there and talk to the spirits in there.] Though once I'm in, then you can try to break it.

[It might be too hard for her to break once they're in that room... but it's important for Lapis to get in there, so Julie relents, nodding.]

I'll wait, then. Maybe the other ghosts in there can help me, anyway.

[Lapis realizes that it'll be more difficult, but right now priority is getting into that room and speaking to those spirits.]

... Right, and I can give you more energy too to make it easier, though only for a limited time. [But that might be enough, hopefully. But anyway, she pushes herself to sit up with a quiet yawn, stretching her wings out as she moves to rest her chin on her knees.] I'm hoping this will go smoothly, but I probably shouldn't get my hopes up.

[The sound of Ryan getting up and moving about would reach them - he's finished fixing his little toy, so now he's relocating his zombies. It won't be too much longer now.]

I hope too... just don't do anything to make him mad, okay? I don't want him to hurt you, too.

[That he apparently hasn't hurt her yet baffles Julie. Of course, even Ryan treats the living and the dead differently.]

[She perks up when she hears the sound, her feathers bristling slightly.]

... It's not like he can do anything worse than what I've already been though, trust me. But I'll try.

[Honestly, she's a bit surprised he has hurt her too badly yet as well. Sure there was the whole wake up call thing, but that has been it. She doesn't expect that to last though.]

[Once Ryan opens that door, faint screams might reach her ears. They'll fade away quickly, though - he orders them into another closed off area in the hopes that Lapis won't be able to see or hear them. A couple minutes later he shows up below her nest, peering up and trying to get a look at her.]

It's ready.

[She winces faintly when she hears the screams, frowning faintly for a moment and shivering slightly, still feeling uneasy even when they fade away. She keeps her expression even as she peers down back at him, though.]

... Mm, alright then. [With that she hops down from her nest, her feathers bristling almost anxiously as she heads to where she needs to go.]

[He left the door open, so all he has to do is lead her inside. If all the containers in the room are full, there around thirty bodies stored here. There's only six ghosts, though, and Thomas. Bernie is present as well - since Ryan knew he wasn't haunted, he didn't order him away. He's standing slack jawed with drool running down his chin, looking more like a big dumb dog than a frightening moving corpse.]

Manners, Bernie, [Ryan chides, causing him to snap his mouth shut.]

[Her eyes fix on the ghosts before glancing over at Bernie, blinking at him and still feeling a bit wary. Even if how he snaps his mouth shut at Ryan's words almost makes her smile. But her attention is on the ghosts again, not wanting to think about all the bodies that might be in here.]

... Why're you here? You're not bound to anything, are you? [Her eyes drift over to Thomas and she frowns, her feathers bristling apprehensively.]
