7. Screw RNG, I do what I want!
Joel ☢ TLOU
5/1
He had explained that if anyone was trying to bust in, he could easily shove the shelves over to barricade the door, make extra time to get his ass out.
Tess figures that made sense. A lot of sense.
Hours later and she was finally making her exit. Her building was to the right of his, it would be a short walk over. With the notes rolled up in her hand as she was making her way for the staircase, she's too distracted with mental tallies of inventory and numbers to realize there's someone coming up the stairs. She's talking to herself in a quiet whispering murmur, numbers numbers and more numbers, and dates.
About to move on down the stairs Tess turns the corner and practically collides with whoever had been coming up. Some of her papers slip free and flutter down to the rotting filthy carpet, the rest crumpling in her grip. Her balance is thrown back a step. It had been her own goddamn fault, but that doesn't mean she's going to apologize!
"Hey! Might want to watch where you're going." Asshole.
Tess catches a glimpse of dark hair as she shoots whoever she'd bumped into an annoyed look, crouching to collect what had dropped, one paper having tumbled in the air to land at the bottom of the seven stairs from the second floor to the third.
no subject
He's taking the stairs two-by-two. It's either smart as hell that Tommy chose to live in a place to high up from the ground - a longer time for patrol or Infected to get to the top of the building, buying him more time to get out - or really fucking stupid, given it's a really damn long way down to fall if that rattly, rusting fire escape outside one of his windows should ever collapse.
As he's rounding another landing and taking another flight further up into the building, he spots a woman coming down. Hand gripping the rail, he moves to the right-hand side to get past her, noticing that she seems distracted with whatever is in her hand - and finds her bumping right into him when he's about to swing around the landing to take the final flight up.
And whoa, that's quite a bark the woman's got on her. "I was just thinkin' the same thing," comes his gruff reply, though as his eyes land on the paper floating down to the bottom of the flight of steps, he lets out a sigh and trots back down them, stoops down, snatches the paper up, trots back up the steps.
"Ma'am," he says, holding the paper out to her.
no subject
Tess straightens up as he returns with her paper in hand, chin lifting as she looks him in the face to get a real good look at him. She knows almost everyone in the zone, in almost every sector. She makes it her business to know and yet this guy has somehow slipped beneath her radar because she doesn't recognize him at all, there's no name she can put to his face, all that dark hair and the beard covering what looks like might be a nice hard jaw underneath.
Her attention darts down to the paper in his hand, back up, and Tess takes it from him. The 'ma'am' bit throws her for a bit of a loop but that doesn't mean it's not nice to hear that manners still exist in their shitty little world.
"Thanks," she answers with some reluctance, rolling the paper up with the rest of the others.
Again her eyes cut to his face to search his features. There's something about him that seems familiar, like a resemblance to someone she knows.
"You got a name?" A name to go with that accent, which is thicker than her own, deeper. She tries to place it, and can't.
no subject
He falters at her asking his name. The way she's studying him, too, like she's trying to work out if she knows him, or like she's recognised something about him that she can't place.
If Joel has learned anything over these last ten years, it's to never freely give away his identity. Especially given the people he's known in the past, the people who could come looking for him. His three, four years banding with Hunters leaves a pretty shady mark on anyone.
And so he replies, giving her a wary, assessing look, "Why?"
no subject
"Either you're new to these parts and that's why I don't know you, or you slipped under my radar." Tess plants a hand on her hip, shifts her stance to the side as the hand holding the papers lowers. She tilts her head and doesn't hide the way she checks him out, checks him out like he's promised merchandise at the end of a successful drop. "Which is it?"
no subject
The way she hides no shame in checking him out is a little unnerving. And, he supposes, a little exciting, although mostly unnerving. He prefers to do things like checking women out when they're unawares, glance over his shoulder to check out their hips and their ass and their thighs. Always only a glance and nothing more. Joel has become a lot of things since the outbreak, but that's one part of him that hasn't changed. Besides which, it's always safer to inspect on the sly. Last thing he wants is someone pulling a gun on him.
He takes a half step backwards, hands coming out either side of him in a vague shrug. "Don't see why it matters which it is," he replies. "You, uh…" A vague nod in the direction of Tommy's apartment. "You just on your way from seeing Tommy?"
no subject
"Oh, it matters." That's all she'll say.
Tess glances back over her shoulder and then looks at him again. "Why?" she throws right back at him, jaw jutting slightly to the side in thought as she gives him another up and down look. Her tongue clucks against the inside of her cheek twice; she's curious about him and why he's dodging.
It's one of her pet peeves when people play hard to get, even if she knows exactly how to play along to get the information she needs. Everyone's entitled to their skeletons in their own closets, god forbid hers is heaping with old bones and dusty cobwebs.
no subject
A faint, "Heh, does it?" leaves his lips, but he doesn't press it any further. He's going to be on his way in a minute; and he has a pretty solid feeling this woman was just in Tommy's apartment, and that is going to be a matter Joel will be taking up with his brother in a minute. And Tommy'll tell him it's none of his god damn business, and Joel'll just shrug and tell him he oughta watch out for women with sharp claws. And that'll probably be the end of that.
But, ah, so she's going to use his tactic against him? Well, alright, then. Must mean she was seeing Tommy; it ain't like she's denying it.
"Just makin' conversation, I guess," comes his vague reply. "And I'm gonna take that coy answer as a 'yes'; though, guess I'll find out from my brother either way soon enough." And with that, he starts to round the bannister to head up the next flight of stairs to Tommy's apartment.
no subject
Tommy's told her about his brother, bits here and there. He's kept some details on the vague side and she respects the guy enough to not badger for the full details. But this guy--this guy--is Tommy's brother?
Tess brings up a hand as if to stop him. "Hold up- Joel?" she says his name like she's testing it, letting the last letters roll off her tongue. "You're Joel? You're Tommy's brother?"
Jesus Christ, he cannot be serious.
This time she's the one taking a half-step backwards and her gaze cutting over his frame isn't the appreciative kind like it was moments earlier. Tess is sizing the man up while he's in front of her, in the flesh, trying to piece the resemblance together between the two. Shit. No wonder he had seemed so familiar. And that accent...
Now it all made sense.
Goddamn Texans.
Does this mean Tommy's talked about her to him the way he's talked to her about his brother, this Joel? She knows Tommy likes to talk and trusts him to not say anything other than her name and maybe her business within the zone. Who knows what else he's said.
no subject
Oh, hell, Tommy. That boy's got a mouth on him sometimes. The hell has he been saying to this woman about him? He throws a brief glance of annoyance up in the direction of Tommy's place.
And, great. Now the woman's sizing him up, as though it's her god damn business who he is. He draws in a deep breath, lets out a mildly irritated sigh. He'll be having words with Tommy about keeping his damn trap shut. Joel don't like people knowing who he is, unless he's got a damn good reason for them to know.
"Why?" Joel replies, arms coming up to cross over his broad chest. The sleeves of his ratty denim shirt are rolled up over his forearms; there are a couple of faded red-brown stains on it near the hem. Blood. His or someone else's, it's impossible to say. "What's my big mouth of a brother been sayin' about me now?"
no subject
"You never smile, for starters," is her casual response, her eyes lifting back to his. They drop the few inches to settle on his lips and then up they go again. "The rest you'll just have to take up with him when you see him, I suppose."
Since Tommy had asked her to keep in touch again with him two days from now, Tess figures she'll be having words of her own with the guy about this brother of his. Would've been nice if he'd told her that Joel would be hanging out in her part of the neighborhood. She'd hate to think what it'll be like if he was sharing the same fucking building as her.
no subject
As for the rest of whatever it is Tommy's told this woman… Well, ain't that a conveniently vague answer. He sure will be taking it up with Tommy.
But now that this woman really has Joel's attention, he tilts his head slightly, eyes narrowing just as slightly in contemplative scrutiny. Come to think of it, he's beginning to wonder if this is that woman Tommy has mentioned. The "looker". The one with a tongue like a fuckin' machete, as Tommy had once described this woman he works with. Helluva mouth on her. You wouldn't want to cross this woman if your nuts meant anything special to you. What did Tommy say her name was? Tess?
His arms are still crossed over his chest, and that same scrutinising look of contemplation remains affixed on his face for a few short beats. "You wouldn't happen to be Tess, would you?"
no subject
She would throw Tommy's apartment an annoyed look of her own but her back stands to it.
Tess looks him over one more time (damn nice arms, comes the absent thought) before deciding to shrug off her pack. She gets the buckle unclasped and folds the papers up to slip them inside. Now it's her turn to wonder why the hell Tommy's been saying anything about her to his brother; it's none of his goddamn business. Doesn't matter if her name is known out on the streets and throughout the sectors. Her business has been mostly with Tommy and only as business partners where shipments are concerned, nothing more.
Her pack is swung back up, shrugged on. She loops her thumbs into the thinner bottom ends of the straps and stands again with a hip locked to the side. "I might be. Or for all we know my name's really Sharleen. Which d'you figure?"
no subject
"Well, Tommy don't know any Sharleen," not that Joel knows of, anyway, "so based on that fact alone, I figure you must be Tess."
So, this is Tommy's business partner. Tess. Just a business partner? Business partner with benefits, perhaps? Tommy don't seem to talk about this woman in that way, though. Joel supposes he's not surprised. This woman seems like someone who'd have a guy's balls for breakfast if he so much as tried to pull anything on her that she didn't like. Tommy has always been a smoother talker than Joel; and he doubts any smooth talk would work on this woman.
no subject
"Since you're so concerned about your baby brother's business, Joel, we were discussing a shipment. Nothing more, nothing less. You go on up there and I guarantee he'll run by you the same pep talk he gave me."
Tess has a feeling the three of them are going to end up working together sooner or later. Shouldn't be so bad, she's learned from Tommy that Joel's a decent shooter. He's had plenty of practice, that's what Tommy had said. Although the thought crosses her mind that he might make a damn good meat shield with the broadness of his upper body, and that thought brings a faint curve of a smile to her lips.
no subject
His arms cross back over his chest, and he gives a vague shrug. "I believe you. You don't strike me as someone who minces your words."
He's telling the truth, too. In just the very short span of time that he's met this woman, he doesn't doubt for a second that this woman messes around when it comes to getting what she wants. She gives off that vibe. Something about her hardness, in the way she talks, in the way she looks.
He takes a strolling step closer towards her, and another. "I will say, though." he continues, "as a matter of interest: you mess with him or go pullin' any fast ones on him, and I guarantee it won't end well for you."
no subject
Share what, though, is something she keeps in the air.
That's how it works, doesn't it, in this day and age? Family sticks together. Family shares amongst themselves. Brings a whole new meaning to what's yours is mine and what's mine is yours.
"The same could be said for yourself," she replies to his comment then on mincing words, and shares the same thoughts on him. Though he's more reserved than she is. An observer first, analytical as opposed to how she charges on in guns out, doesn't dance around. Gets straight to the point.
Speaking of getting straight to the point and being blunt, Tess raises a brow at his approach. There might have been a thrill run through her at watching him move closer, seeing how he appeared so fucking casual about it all, words included. She keeps her eyes locked with his and something darkens them; they drop down briefly to the movement of his lips. Is he threatening her? Both brows come up and she finds herself giving a short mocking breathy laugh. Her arms cross under her chest, breasts pressing up against the dip in her neckline. Alright, she can play this game. It's a game she knows well.
"That right?" Tess takes a step of her own forward to match him, not one to ever back down. "I suppose I'll have you to look forward to if and when I do?"
Is there such a thing as personal space in a post apocalyptic era? Not to her. It's also how she works; get in close and unnerve 'em.
no subject
That doesn't stop him from being a little surprised at how brazenly the woman steps into his personal space. Tommy was right: this is a woman you don't want to mess with. Joel can respect that. But he can only respect it if she don't mess with Tommy. Tommy is all he's fucking got left.
He stands his ground, doesn't waver in posture or in eye contact. If she does? When she does? This woman is really something.
"Yeah, you'll have me to look forward to," he replies, "and you'd be mighty stupid to test me."
no subject
She might be looking forward to the day she has to do a job with him, to see if he's everything Tommy's made him out to be, vague descriptions and stories or not.
Another step forward to again match the second one he'd taken towards her earlier. "And I'd say you're mighty stupid right now to tempt me," she answers and mimicks his Texan drawl with ease.
Is it obvious that she's testing him? That she might be teasing him? She's definitely not interested in trying to intimidate him, not at all. Tess is more interested to see what his limits might be. After all - to her - he's new territory. She makes it her business to know new territory, name and occupation aside.
no subject
"That so?" Joel replies.
Arms still crossed over his chest. Eyes, hard and becoming increasingly distrusting, still watching her closely. "Hell of a threat to make against your own business partner, wouldn't you agree?" he finally replies. "The way I hear it, Tommy's been nothin' but gracious towards you. And you're givin' talk about being tempted to mess him around? That ain't no way to show respect towards your business partner."
Another half-step in closer, and now he's right in her personal space, towering over her. "Just so we're clear, you do mess him around? I won't think twice about poppin' your kneecaps off."
no subject
And just like that she moves fast, too fast, whipping her gun out from the back of her waistband. The sound of the safety clicking out is sharp in her ears as she gets it brought up to press the barrel uncomfortably against his crotch.
There's a hard edge to her eyes now, a cold and penetrating look. A look that almost says, Try me, I dare you.
What a wonderful start.
Tess doesn't give two shits that this man is Tommy's brother. He should've warned him better, but then again this is actually the first time in a while where someone's stood up to her, never backed down. Challenged her by just standing there and glaring at her.
no subject
--so?, but he doesn't get a chance to finish the rhetorical question. Instead, he realises she's reaching behind her for her gun, hears the safety being flicked off, goes to dash his hand to his own waistband to grab out his gun--
--and finds himself letting out a stunned, almost horrified, "Jesus Chr--!" as a gun is suddenly pressed to his crotch. And not just pressed to his crotch; digging in to his crotch. His first instinct is to lash out at her, throw a punch at her, slam his fist right into her face and break her nose just to get the fucking gun away from him, but survival just as instantly kicks in and he knows that if he does anything like that, she'll blow his nuts clean off.
Without thought, without hesitation, both hands instantly fly up in surrender, and his gaze cuts wildly between the gun pressed to his groin and the crazy fucking psychotic woman holding it. His mouth has suddenly gone dry. His heart has just as suddenly picked up, pounding hard and fierce in his chest.
"The fuck is wrong with you?!"
no subject
"Not so tough now, are you?" she notes on a smug tone, and snorts under her breath. The gun is nudged against his crotch for extra measure just once more - to mostly get a rise out of him - and then gradually it's eased away. "And here I'd thought Tommy had been smart to warn his big ol' mean brother about his business partner."
Clearly not.
"You're bein' rude, Joel, keeping him waiting."
Letting her eyes drop down to where she'd had her gun against his crotch they linger there and then dart up again to his. She goes to take a step back, safety clicked back into place, and makes to brush past him to continue on for the stairs to leave.
She's pretty sure she's said (more like done) all that's been needed to be said.
