Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.

Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.

Now it’s time to roll some dice and see what the weather will have in store for you today.

1. DRIZZLE ☂ It’s not too heavy or too light of a downpour, just enough to wash away stuff in the air, water the ground, and clean up the streets.

2. MONSOON ☂ It’s horrible and awful! Rain is coming down in buckets, no one can get anywhere, the wind is whipping everything about, and now the cable is out.

3. SHOWER ☂ Reminds you of early spring, doesn’t it? A nice shower to make everything all green and smell fresh again. Lovely.

4. FLOOD ☂ While rain is good, it can sometimes be bad. Grab a boat!

5. CATS & DOGS ☂ You’re lucky with this one. It’s not the worst storm in the world, but it’s still pretty heavy. Be careful when driving!

5. PUDDLES ☂ After it rains, what is the number one thing you have to do? Go put on some rubber boots and splash around of course!

6. SUDDEN STORM ☂ It might have been predicted, but sometimes storms just sweep in and do their thing with little to no warning. Hope you’re not outside.

7. THUNDER & LIGHTNING ☂ Loud, surprising, scary, ominous, comforting, fantastic to watch or listen to… some like thunder and lightning, others not so much. Of course, if this happens before a big confrontation, the universe is telling you something.

8. CAN’T GET WORSE ☂ You did not say that. You did not just say that. How many times does this need to be seen in movies and books before anyone learns?

9. STUCK ☂ No, no, no, no. This cannot be happening. What happened to the ten percent chance of rain? You forgot your umbrella and now you’re stuck in it!

10. RUINED PLANS ☂ You had all these wonderful plans to go outside, have some fun in the sunshine, do some errands, maybe a date… and the weather goes against them.

11. DANCING ☂ Sometimes rain is a cause for celebration, or you just feel like doing something spontaneous. Grab someone to join you and get wet!

12. RAIN BATTLE ☂ The most intense, important battles happen in the rain. Verbal spars, punching someone in the guts; it’s all dramatic and climatic. And no one slips.

13. DATE ☂ Aww, don’t let the weather ruin your date! It can be really romantic, being out in the rain, and it’s always fun to go with the flow.

14. A DAY INSIDE ☂ Sometimes, it’s just better to stay inside and enjoy something simple and easy like board games or catching up on TV shows, or maybe the bills.

After soaking and washing, Loki took his time dressing. There was something satisfying about layering on the clothes and ornaments of a prince of Asgard. It may not mean much here but it certainly kept his goals at the forefront of his mind.

Once he was dressed and ready, he strode back to the great hall and resumed his place. There was much less activity then there had been for the mid day meal, only himself and the servants. Until the Solider arrived of course.

He came in before too much more time had passed, still clean, well dressed, and with his metal hand covered in a glove for the sake of cleanliness as much as anything else. He took the same seat he'd been shown to at the previous meal, deciding to keep his questions until there were fewer people nearby.

They ate in silence for a bit, so the Soldier could eat without interruption. Then, his wine cup in hand, Loki turned to him. "So how is the arm? Do you need me to look at it?" He's been so concerned about it that he figured he should ask.

"It's working perfectly. Our sparring didn't damage it. It may need lubricated at some point in the future, but right now, it's fine." He paused, glancing over, and then adding - "Thank you for asking."

Odd to think that there had been concern. He'd have to think about that later.

"I am glad to hear it. " The arm did look fine and it wasn't that Loki doubted, but he did still wave a quick hand down the arm, not touching it, just using his magic to make sure the insides were as undamaged as the Solider believed. It satisfied him and he sat back in his chair again, casually sipping his wine. "Yes, it does appear undamaged. But if you ever have an issue, come to me at one." It was not a request. His new toy was no use to him broken.

Something was off about the thanks, as if the Solider wasn't expecting Loki to ask about his arm. Had Hydra really taken so poor care of their asset? He was clearly in much better hands now.

He nodded his agreement - and only asked afterward, "Can I have a specific set of orders, my lord? I can't follow your orders if I don't have them, and so far, I... have more free time than I'm used to. I should be doing something more useful. And productive."

The 'my lord' eared the Solider a raised eyebrow and an approving smile. It would seemed he'd accepted his place quite nicely. "Was my order too broad for you? To make this keep defensible against any threat wasn't a big enough challenge for you?" He asked was curiosity, careful not to sound condescending.

"No." That order was simple. "But it doesn't fill all of my time." In fact, it hadn't even started in earnest. When he had things to supervise, more time would be taken, but until then, he needed more.

"You must be commanded on how to use all of your time?" Of course he did. Hydra had frozen him in between uses. There was no such thing as free time to the Solider.

While Loki pondered what he could order the Solider to do, he couldn't help but pursue his curiosity. "Have you nothing you like to do? Or did Hydra beat it out of you?"

He shook his head. "If there's nothing specific for me to do, all I can do is wait, and that doesn't accomplish anything."

"And you ever want to be useful." It was almost mocking, but not quite. More a hard statement of truth.

In truth, waiting was really all Loki had for the Solider to do now. Once the keep started filling with other outcasts he collects, it would fall to the Solider to keep them in line. But now..."I will have more orders for you but they will come later. You are only the first I plan to bring here, to build my army, and you will be the one to keep them in line. But if waiting is all I have, will you do it?"

He wouldn't like it but he nodded. "Of course." If that was all there was to do, then he would do it. He would cope with the frustration.

"Think of it as an exercise in breaking your programming." Loki said loftily, as if it were as simple as it sounded. He knew it wasn't but there really was nothing for the Solider to do besides the tasks Loki had assigned for him. His research and duties as Lord of this world were not things the Solider could assist with.

There was a fleeting frown. Breaking his programming...

Programming.

His hands tightened into fists as images flooded him and he caught his breath, having to clutch the side of the table to keep himself from acting either in anger or in fear.

Loki frowned as the Solider suddenly seemed to tense before he realized his careless words must have triggered something in the poor man's brain. Damn. "Are you alright?"

Setting down his cup, he stood and moved to stand behind the Solider before he lightly set his hands on his shoulders. He used his magic to chill his hands to give the Solider a feeling to ground himself too.

The touch at first had him startled -- but the chill went through and reduced his startle and anger to a trembling that wouldn't quite stop. One moment, he could see reality. The next, he was surrounded by freezing metal, which had been reality.

The Solider seemed to fall deeper into his memories and Loki immediately pulled his hands away. He was a lose at what to do and he was trying not to panic himself. Biting the inside of his cheek, he moved in front of him now and knelt down so he could look into the Soldier's face. It was as he suspected, his thoughts were else where.

After a split second of debating, Loki placed his hands on the Soldier's shoulders again, this time cupping his neck and tracing his fingers down it. It felt odd, giving in to his urge to comfort instead of sealing it away as usual but he didn't think violence would bring back the Solider. But once he was back, Loki planned on snatching back his fingers and pretending this hadn't happened. "Solider...Solider, listen to me. Come back."

The touch was gentler than any in his memory. What he remembered was pain and metal and bright lights, the touch of blades or probes, the smell of blood, the undefinable scent of cold. Gentle hands jarred him out of thought, away from the memories of metal and into the reality of wooden tables laden with food with a gasp, his hands lifting to grasp the wrists of those that touched him. His eyes sought wildly, seeing nothing of the pain-filled memories - but then settled on the pale face that looked up at him.

"You... Oh. Oh..."

Tension was slow to ebb away, but it did leave bit by bit, leaving him looking into green eyes that settled him into himself as he hadn't been before.

When the Soldier grabbed his wrists, Loki froze and swallowed thickly. He could break the hold easily enough, and he wanted to, but instead he stayed where he was. In the name of building loyalty, or so he told himself. The vulnerability and lose staring back at him was far to familiar then he'd like to admit.

Once he was sure the Solider was back to himself, he spoke again, trying for a lofty tone though he wasn't sure he succeeded. "Are you back to yourself now, Solider?"

That tone of voice hurt something inside him - something unexpected. He looked at Loki with confusion before letting him go. He shouldn't have taken hold. "Yes," he said quietly. "I'm fine."

He wasn't. But he would be soon enough.

"Good." Loki took his hands back and stood up quickly. The look in the Soldier's eyes still haunted him.

"If you need anything else, I'll be in my library for the rest of the night." The wine bottle disappeared into his leathers as he moved back. "Rest well, Soldier." He was retreating and he knew it, but he needed space from...whatever had just happened.

The Soldier nodded once and stood in programmed respect as his host left. And then, once he'd had time to go on his way, he went as well.

To his rooms, where he could surely harm no one. Where he could embarrass no one. And where the past surely wouldn't come to haunt him.

The next day, Loki spent most of his time in his library, if anything to hide the fact he was hungover from the Solider and the servants. One bottle of wine had turned into many to forget the look in the Soldier's eyes and the response it had caused in Loki himself. It was no way for a Prince, a King to act.

What duties he did have, he fulfilled - he spoke with the architect, made plans, sent him off with the requirements and the designs he had in mind, and did make sure he knew that the construction would be supplemented with magic before any of the impossibilities concerned him.

But then, with nothing to do, he went through exercises, fought and trained, ate when he needed, and eventually took up a guard's post on the rampart. It was something to do.

Court that day had been light so Loki had sent his apologies and promised those with business to return tomorrow and they would be heard first thing and in private if they so chose. The extra honor seemed to work and no one was upset.

In fact, he did not emerge from his library until dinner, when he came down to the great hall and asked one of the servants to tell the Solider dinner was served. It wasn't a clear invitation and not a request either.
