It's easier to understand metaphors when they're not metaphors. The human brain just prefers concrete information. Luckily for you, you live in a world where there's one less abstract; for as long as you can remember, you've known about the glow. The "glow" is exactly what it sounds like - it's a glowing in your chest, emanating from your heart, that you receive when you meet the one. Your soulmate. Your actual, indisputable soulmate.

The glow doesn't always automatically happen when you meet that person. Sometimes, there's a delay. Sometimes, you've known them for years before it kicks in. When it happens, though, you'll know. You can't simply ignore your ribcage lighting up.

Other than that, the glow isn't harmful, per se, at least not physically. Psychologically, it can be pretty taxing, because there's virtually no chance of escaping fate. You will end up with the person you glow for. It's a given. Sure, you can try to defy it. You won't explode or anything. You will, however, begin to feel a sense of incompleteness that comes from trying to stay away, and fighting the growing - and glowing - feelings of fondness and the desire to be with them and to protect them.

friends ♡ You've known each other for a while, then one day, you both light up.
exactly who you wanted ♡ Yes! Jackpot! They're totally the person you've always dreamed of being with.
hate ♡ ...are you serious? They're your bully! Your rival! Your enemy! There has to be something wrong here.
forbidden ♡ You're glowing for somebody totally wrong, whether it's wrong by law - a relation or age difference - or some other manner.
distaste ♡ You view this whole process with a critical eye. Doesn't mean your exempt.
with someone else ♡ You thought you found the one and were just waiting for the glow to show, but then, you started up with another person.
inopportune time ♡ Nobody likes their big speech ruined by a glowing heart.
unfortunate implications ♡ These sorts of memes rarely explore how creepy the idea of soulmates intrinsically is. What if you end up with someone you are ultimately incompatible with? What if you're miserable?
doing something big ♡ They just saved you from certain death! Rescued you from captors! Loaned you five bucks! And how do you repay them except by starting off their glow.
fighting it ♡ Nope. Nope. Not going to happen. You won't give in. You'll be the first in history to shake it off.
giving in ♡ ...you were saying? Might as well get together.
first time ♡ The obligatory sex option. Sex is like sealing the deal, and some report their whole bodies lighting up.

There was nothing traditional about the glow in Tony Stark's chest. What, for so many others, seemed to be a pulsing red heartbeat had taken on very different qualities for the mechanical genius. The teal blue glow in his chest emanated and pulsed in a different manner entirely. He had seen plenty of people get the glow before. It was just a part of life. Everyone who found their soulmate found that glowing pulse starting in their ribcage. Some tried to run from it and others embraced it, but it was next to impossible to ignore. The strings of fate twisting and pulling two people together.

Tony just didn't expect it would happen to him. Especially not like this. He was known for being a playboy. For hopping from partner to partner of one night stands, never being their in the morning and never bothering to call them back. Keeping everyone at a distance. And unsurprisingly, none of them had ever lit up his light like a Christmas Tree. So it was easy to imagine his surprise when it happened.

He was under one of his favorite ladies when it started. A hot little thing all dressed in red and black, his hands sliding along her belly, his own body covered in sweat and oil. Muscles sore from holding his arms up for so long while he explored. And while Tony knew he loved her, he also was fairly positive his heart and soul had not just latched onto his Lamborghini.

But there was no one else in the house at the moment, save his own creations. Unless someone had dropped by unannounced?

"Mute." The ACDC track blaring in the workshop went dead quiet at a single word. Tony slid out from under the car, his hands lingered on the interior of the bumper as he went quiet and listened. Nothing. So what was with the sudden personal light show?

Why, hell-oh.

[A philosophical question for the ages: if he doesn't have a heart, period (not to break and not to stab and not to generally pump liquid through the veins he doesn't have) , what, exactly is lighting up in his chest upon contact? It's enough to provoke a total systems check, which reveal no aberration to speak of and no explanation.

Blaming the Vision's ex seems like a good place to start. Not that his advanced sensors can't pick up a couple of things right off the bat: 1) that the general permeation of trace cosmic radiation fond in nearly all active superheroes due to intense contact with "outer space" has a different pattern than it does with heroes from his own universe, 2) she seems different from what his internal databanks have stored on the Scarlet Witch, in a way he can't precisely quantify owing to the fact that he's never really had a conversation with the damn woman, and 3) that her chest appears to be glowing exactly the same way his is.

Metaphor doesn't exactly slot with him the way it would for a human being; or it shouldn't, but it does. But regardless, he feels absolutely zero shame in checking out this woman who he damn well knows is totally into sweet sweet robot love, presuming this is some sort of fairy tale crap or some magic on her part and...well, he doesn't really need an excuse, ok.]

Gauron had found out two very unexpected things today. The first was that he had the necessary prerequisite to have a soulmate. The second was that fate was apparently a thing, and it was more twisted than even he could've suspected. That, on its own, impressed the hell out of him.

Back in the plane, that cute little schoolgirl uniform had hidden the glow, but when he'd had her change into a hospital gown to make it easier for the specialist he'd brought with him to examine her, it was unmistakably obvious. Watching the horrified realization creep over her face had been a better show than Gauron had had in a long time. It's too bad he doesn't have the time to savor it a little longer before he crushes any hope she might have that this means things will go easier for her.

His lips creep back from his eyeteeth in a smile that would give eldritch abominations nightmares. "Sorry to have to say it, but this doesn't change anything."

The only people who are ever going to mean anything to him are his child soldiers - and even them, though he loves deeply, he's not attached to - and it's a little too late for her to join their ranks.

He hadn't realised at first. It wasn't that he didn't get his glow, but beneath the drive suit it hadn't been visible. And maybe he'd been a little caught up in everything that was going on; they'd taken down a Kaiju and headed straight for Hong Kong, he hadn't even gotten changed afterwards.

It wasn't until they were in the mess that Chuck realised. And wasn't that shitty timing? Barely days away from the biggest fight of his life, of their lives, and that's when it happens. And of all people, his soul mate has to be Raleigh fucking Becket.

And okay, maybe he isn't as angry about it as he'd like to pretend he is, but denial is something the Hansen men are good at and he'll be damned if he's going to admit that there's anything going on, that he feels anything for the other man. At least, anything outside of loathing and grudging respect.

It isn't as easy as he'd hoped either, avoiding the other pilot. But he forces himself to do it. He's not giving into this. He became a pilot at 15. He can do anything.

Or so he keeps trying to convince himself the whole time he's out walking Max.
