[ convincing katniss to stay and smoke with him doesn't often work, but charles makes a habit of asking anyway. he's never disappointed when she refuses, as that's the answer he expects, but he can't figure out what it is that makes her say yes.

this evening, for example: he'd texted her asking for a delivery and when they met at the back door, he barely had to invite her in before she moved past him. it was odd, but katniss was odd (as were most of the people charles knew, himself included) and charles couldn't say he wasn't delighted.

they beeline for the basement study, where the nice speakers are. charles shuts the door behind them (as though his mother would ever come down here, but better safe than sorry) and picks up the baggie and papers from his lap. ]

She couldn't even remember the man's name, at the moment. What did it matter? He was just another fleshy tool, like all the rest. And he wasn't going to miss a handful of his precious cigarettes. She simply couldn't stand another night of listening to him drone on about nonsense before he either fell asleep or took to artlessly groping her.
