You took them for granted, that's a fact. Maybe you were cruel, maybe you didn't notice them, or maybe you just didn't tell them how you really felt...or you didn't get the chance. You couldn't get yourself in line and you were stupid before and didn't realize what you felt for them. And now, they've moved on (or so it seems). You haven't. You feel like you lost your shot. It could be far, far too late for anyone!

You're faced with them once more. You've gotten one more chance. You've used it, too - you've just confessed flat out! It came out of your lips with no provocation. So what do you do now? Follow it up with more blabbering confessions? Try to be smooth and win them over? Apologize? Hug and kiss them...or steal them away?

What's more important, though, is how they respond.

He never really liked the kid. Luke didn't like anyone and it was little wonder. He was, at best, a sociopath, and sociopaths didn't generally have any ability to connect empathically with people. It was a little hard to make friends that way. Besides, Luke's desires were typically dark, selfish, and more or less on the violent scale.

Trying to get close to people generally started out with name calling, lying, and picking fights. He understood a fist to a face better than he ever could a smile.

That was probably where this whole mess started, now that he thought about it. A group of kids had surrounded Zach the first time saw him across campus grounds. Luke didn't go to school there, he was just passing through in his attempt to find the asshole that left him in that diner on the side of the road. The thought of a fight, however, was good enough to get him involved.

The group had stolen Zach's camera and were in the middle of calling him all sorts of names (though 'fag' was the most common word flung) when Luke strode between them and put his arm around the stranger's shoulders. "So what the fuck?"

Needless to say, he'd gotten a black eye out of the deal, a broken nose, and nearly killed one of the boys when his ability went a little haywire. He'd only meant to heat up the kid's zipper...not give him first degree burns on his crotch.

It'd gotten weird with Zach after that...but only because Luke had turned more or less into a stalker than anything. He was always just...there. At the coffee shop, outside of the media lab building, waiting around the dorms.

It wasn't normal but not even Luke's mom could ever claim her son was.
