There are lots of reasons why people would pretend to be in a relationship. If the fakery is mutual, they could be using each other to get their friends and family off their backs. Spies and detectives use marriage as a cover all the time. And what about those in a future dystopian world where your mate is selected for you if you don't choose. Wouldn't it be better if you chose someone you at least knew?

If the fakery isn't mutual...well, maybe your intentions were good. Maybe you were pretending to be with them because you didn't want them to feel bad. Or, more likely, you were using them to get at a greater goal - information, riches, a seat of power, anything they have access to.

Now it's time to dissolve this fake relationship, and now here's the rub: you've grown real feelings for the other person. What to do, what to do? Do you come clean? If you were using them, will they forgive you and take you back for real? If you were both in on the act, are the feelings mutual?

If it's not time to dissolve, there are other problems you could run into. Since you're not really a couple, you shouldn't mind them being in love with someone else...right?

Madelyne Pryor has not reformed. Nor ever will, not until she's gotten her revenge. But with her powers on the fritz and half the superpowered people on the planet ready to expect the worst, she was going to need a cover. And that cover was going to have to be a stable relationship, with all signs of having settled down and given up her supervillain schemes.

She'd been thinking of settling down with a man, maybe a single father so that the kid was there to help reinforce the illusion. And she still had access to her money, and the shadow corporation she'd built with it, so it wasn't difficult at all to use her connections there to arrange for a relationship with someone who wouldn't mind that it was fake and would be willing to play along--so much easier than nauseatingly playing the little wife role for however long this took. A fake relationship. Convenient.

Only surprising that her contact had sent her Janine. Not the conventional choice Maddy had been expecting, but perhaps the unconventional relationship would make the lie easier for the powers that be to believe. And there was something about the photo of the woman that made Madelyne want to meet her.

So she arranged for a meeting, on the top floor of the now-empty building she owned. Madelyne would have to fill it soon enough, build her corporation from the skeleton that was left behind from the last round of her schemes and reincarnations.

For now, she rather liked the silence. Lovely and deadly, dressed to kill, Madelyne sat behind an expensive desk in an empty office, and waited for her new fake partner to arrive.

Some ideas, but not mandatory ones, are:

Asura pretending to be a good guy for nefarious purposes, only to discover he actually doesn't really want to stop the act. Bonus points if he was pretending it was a 'redeeming himself because of love' deal.

Asura and another villainous character both faking a relationship as a basis for a team-up for their own ends, until accidentally actually feeling something for one another.

Good character pretending to be evil in order to get close to him with the goal of getting rid of him, and being unable to pull the metaphorical trigger on him.]

After her powers had gotten a little out of control and she'd sent her entire boarding school just a wee bit insane, all trapped inside their own private illusory hells, Regan had found herself in custody at the Xavier school, being monitored until they decided whether or not she was redeemable.

She was supposed to integrate. Play nice with the other kids, and only use her powers under supervision. Seventeen, and being treated like a toddler.

But fine, if she had to play nice, she'd play nice. Regan had managed to strike a deal with one of the other girls at the school in a similar situation. They'd play nice together, use each other for alibis, and maybe intentionally get caught kissing now and then so that the teachers would think that was the worst trouble they would be getting into it.

Thing was, Tabitha was a really good kisser, and Regan kept finding herself daydreaming of kissing her friend more often than daydreaming about the firey death of the X-Men.

Groaning as she stumbled through the door of Tabitha's room, as was her habit, Regan flopped onto the bed sprawled across the other girl's lap. "Ughhhhhhh. Class was awful."

[When Kise first approached him with this fake relationship business, he thought the blond had lost it. Them? Be in a relationship? A fake one, but still! Couldn't Kise had gone to someone else? That captain of his? Kuroko? One of his fangirls? Why did it have to be him? But somehow he agreed to it because Kise was just that persuasive and then they started fake dating.]

[It was only supposed to be until the summer ended, until Kise's summer commitments were brought to a close and he was able to finish them without much interruption. They had a pretty good run. The publicity was mostly positive, a lot of people seemed to like them together given how they looked good together and the basketball buddy-buddy thing was "charming". It was hard at the beginning because Kise was a guy and he was whiny and clingy and demanding like he usually was but then...things just changed. Or Aomine had. Suddenly, it felt weird if he didn't see Kise everyday, didn't see his dumb, bright smile and heard his stupid, happy laugh, like something was missing. Then he started thinking about him when he wasn't there, unable to get him out of his mind because that was probably how it was with Kise: he forced a place for himself (somewhere in that cold, hard heart of yours) and wouldn't just get out even if you wanted him to. Persistent little shit. Then it was all sunshine and rainbows when he was around and Aomine found himself smiling, laughing, his chest light though he's started to carry someone there he hadn't expected to.]

[Kise was still Kise, still that guy who used to idolize him and was now someone Aomine respected for his effort and skill, someone he valued as a friend and rival, and suddenly it was like he was something more. It was a cruel twist of fate that it was only for the summer, was just an act so that Kise's job commitments would go smoothly and he'd be less bothered by his fans. Kise himself was also flighty as hell and changed girlfriends like he changed shirts. Looks like he was just going to be one of those abandoned girlfriends and he got into this willingly which just made this even worse. What the hell had he been thinking when he agreed to this? Nothing, he hadn't been thinking anything and that was probably the problem.]

[Summer's end comes to soon and that meant it was time for them to end it. As with most pivotal events in Aomine's life, it's going to happen at a basketball court. Another bitter memory to add to his collection but he's not one to be afraid of bitterness or pain so he goes to meet Kise as he's asked him to the day before. A typical one-on-one to break the flow of appearances and dates they've had to do the past few months or so.]

[There's a cool breeze and it's not as warm as it had been a few days ago even though the sun shines brightly against a clear blue sky. The ball in Aomine's hands is rough and familiar, soothing and steadying, as he moves with it down an outdoor court. It's all instinctual, how he dribbles the ball and runs with it to shoot a basket in a formless, graceful arc. It goes in, naturally, the swish of the net the only sound heard for a brief moment of peace. The silence is broken when the ball drops to the ground and Aomine catches it deftly back into his hands as he wonders where Kise is. He's early for once and Kise's not one to be late when he's going to be playing basketball with Aomine but he wonders anyway. It's another one of those pesky habits he's picked up since finding himself in love with the blond idiot he's only supposed to be fake dating.]

[It's muggy outside the loud, crowded house where the party is taking place. This doesn't dissuade the small blonde from camping out on the porch, one knee hugged to her chest and a cigarette between her fingers. The time she's shown her face to her "girlfriend's" friends were few and far in between. This is just another obligation, as far as she's concerned.

She can't deny the arrangement is beneficial to her, as well. It's stopped Annie's pesky friends from setting her up--through sheer obnoxiousness and good intentions--on one blind date after another because they were concerned. Having a girlfriend who's "too busy to get out of work to hang out often" was a convenient excuse as any to divert unwanted attention.

Little did Annie know a few months back that walking up to the gym regular and ask her to "pretend" would end up like this. But here she is, at someone else's party, waiting for the time to pass so they can drive home and spend the night separately. Not that anyone will have to know.

Frankly, Annie was pretty irritated, and more so at not knowing why she was, this time.]
