Balls were one of those things Alina thought she was never going to get quite right. With a drink in hand, she could usually stumble her way through an evening at these. Especially since others liked to talk at her so much, rather than talking with her. But if she wanted to be careful not overindulge, she couldn't drink too much wine which meant she was a little too sober for the boring conversation she was an ornament in.

Eventually, she found her way back to Nikolai. Nikolai made it look effortless, but she knew him better than most would. She knew what he could be like away from the others.

"Excuse me, but I need to steal his highness for a moment," Alina said politely, nearly stumbling over the courtesy she rarely afforded Nikolai. She never called him 'highness'. He never asked her too, either. But she took his hand, and nodding apologies, pulled Nikolai out into a side hall. One that, from past experience, she knew led them to the small throne room he had shown her before where they would be alone.

"Toast is burning!" Because announcing said things instantly fixes the problem. "Oh yeah...Bread." Sora said to himself as he added it the list of things to pick up then popped the switch on the toaster to remove the extra dark bread now sitting in the machine.

Not one to waste food regardless of how clearly the toast in question was beyond edibility, he started to butter the blackened square liberally with butter as he put in a new slice. [After a certain point, deciding to settle down didn't seem as insane as it used to seem. For the first time in years, the world is a quiet - no Apocalypses, no emergencies, no demons rising or angels falling. There are still things to hunt, but they finally feel like it's somebody else's turn to hunt them. Maybe they didn't want their last dead to be bloody like all their other deaths had been. Maybe they were tired of staring into the face of darkness every day. Maybe they were just tired.

Regardless, they put a payment down on a small, one story house in New England, a little worse for wear, but it got the job done. They didn't mind fixing up what had to be fixed, and eventually it had the essentials, including a garage for Dean and his baby and a small library and study for Sam to retreat from the world (a human mind can get heavy with the Cage after so many years of carrying it). It's an ongoing process, but it's theirs, and their first stable home that had nothing to do with the supernatural.

It was not a question if Castiel was going to be staying with them - now human, and together with Sam for a long time now, it was only natural for him to move in. Dean grumbles like the old man he is, saying that he didn't sign up to live with a married couple, but Sam knows he's glad Cas came along. He's part of the family, and it feels like it. They all bicker over ridiculously trivial things, like taking out the garbage and cleaning the bathroom, they pile onto their Craigslist couch and watch movies and talk over them the whole time - things they did before, but feels different in a place away from all the danger, a place Sam is willing to call home.

Sam works mostly odd repair jobs to help with the upkeep, but he also volunteers at the animal shelter, because he still needs to feel like he's helping the world, even in a small way. One day, one a rare occasion, they bring in a dog and a cat - a golden retriever with scars around its muscle that looks like it came from a wire, and a black tabby cat with a white streak on its forehead. They were found together, and strangely enough, refused to be separated when they came in. The smaller cat was the more protective of the two, clawing at the vets whenever they tried taking its companion away. Sam was the first human it let touch the dog at all.

They were treated and eventually housed together and put up for adoption, but no one seemed to want to adopt two animals at once. The thought entered his mind the first few times he saw them, the cat lazily perched on the golden's shoulder as lazily as you please, the dog curling around the smaller feline as they slept. Even when Sam played with the dog, the cat wasn't peering at him from far behind. They had obviously been through something tough, those two. They deserved a home, too.

In the end, it wasn't hard for him to decide. Sam spent a few weeks saving up to make sure they could afford taking care of two pets, managed to talk Dean into keeping two furballs around, and made the arrangements at the shelter to bring them hope. So when he pulls into their driveway, it's with a dog and a cat piled in the backseat. He hasn't told Castiel, wanting for it to be a surprise. He hopes it will be a pleasant one.]

[sky blue eyes flutter open, mirroring the view of the Tokyo bay as a soft breeze billows through the curtains that frame the open window of the studio apartment. Ryuuko yawns, groaning softly as she shifts her body's position on the bed. lying on her stomach with her head turned to one side she gazes out the adjacent window to where water meets sky on the horizon. catching sight of seagulls singing noisily in the distance. the sound of the water rolling and lapping against the shore. it's the same peaceful picture she wakes up to every morning. long gone are the days of being awoken by the frantic rustling of the Mankanshokus, though endearing in their own way, Ryuuko never took a peaceful morning for granted ever again.

the soft wind tickles the bare skin of her arms and legs that stick out from underneath the disheveled sheet that drapes over her form. navy blue strands gently trembling as the cool springtime breezes sift through her hair. she inhales deeply, the familiar scent of the salty water and warm sun filling her nostrils. ah, but there's something else... a deliciously sweet smelling substance that causes her mouth to water as her mind works to place the peculiarly pleasant scent.

How hard can it really be to find a suitable house? [ So whined the Black Prince, as he was flipping through numerous offering ads about real estate. Really, it was a group call between the two of them, but it seems there was just no consensus to be found - it was probably his desire to push for the largest house that could be found on their budget, and the fact that this was conflicting with them being able to find a house in close proximity to a school or anything like that. Really, he had a tendency towards the impractically extravagant which needed to be curbed. And generally, she would be able to do that.
