Exploration, conquest, commerce, and luxury all find roots in uncharted waters, be they ocean or large inland sea or freshwater lake and river. Along with those marks of growth come some consequences, born of nature and man: namely, several ways in which you might find yourself…

Not quite sure how you got here? There are a few starter options to consider:

1. Shipwreck: Did it go down in a storm? Lose a fight with pirates? Ignore the warnings of a competent lighthouse-keeper (or see no warnings at all due to a competent one)? Whatever the cause, your ship is lost and you survived, somehow. This applies to lakes and rivers, too, which can be just as tempestuous with a bit more potential for settled, "modern" life springing up around them.

2. Vacation Misfortune: Surfing lesson or session gone wrong? Lose your kayak and your paddle? Not quite the island tour/lakeside town fishing expedition/flight across the sea you expected? Jumping from tall seaside cliffs doesn't always have an easy ending, either. Maybe you were caught in a riptide and managed to get through it, but you definitely aren't where you started...

3. Lost at Sea: Can coincide with a shipwreck, but you might also be an intrepid explorer seeking new and uncharted islands, or someone on the run from an overbearing family or one too many failed assignments. Or you just plain can't read a map and work a sextant at the same time, and your compass doesn't point north.

4. Walk the Plank: Of course, for the less ethically inclined there is always piracy in its various forms. A prisoner or a renegade acting for his own benefit can be forced off the ship into the sea and whatever awaits him there; a stowaway or thief aboard could meet a similar fate.

5. Crossing Lines: Speaking of the criminal realm, if you run afoul of the wrong crowd in a port city, or you are the wrong crowd and you screw up one time too many, there's no law in that lawless profession saying they can't truss you up and toss you off the nearest dock. Hopefully you find some benevolent help after that.

6. Too Close to Land: What if the water is your natural home? Drawing too close to the shallows leaves you subject to crashing waves and sandburn, among other things; stay for too long as the tide ebbs, and you might get beached. Weather is probably a factor for you, too, as the hot sun and changing tide leave you dry quickly, or a storm rolling in makes the surf churn and pull.


It doesn't have to be one of these! There are near-countless variations on how and why and with what means one ends up washed up on the beach (unconscious, or drifting in on a makeshift raft, or swimming for shore, or looking for new discoveries - or any combination thereof), all of which include just a bit of suspension of disbelief. Maybe it's tropical; maybe it's frigid. Be bold. Be creative. AU stuff, one person in another's canon stuff, completely unrelated but you think it would be cool to play this out stuff: everything goes.


Setting up your initial post with some kind of scene suggestion is recommended, but not required.


Tag other people. Become the rescuer, actively seeking to assist after an accident or rumor you heard, or a fellow survivor/explorer, or someone taking their beachcombing find captive (alone or as part of a larger collective), or someone sent to fetch the missing person for straightforward or nefarious purposes. You don't even need to be the person making the discovery! Maybe you're introducing the washed-up victim to life in his or her new environment instead, a walk about town or a lesson in how to do the hard labor required of such vagrants. This isn't an explicitly smut or violence-ish meme but it could happen, so please take note and warn or describe permissions accordingly.

Finally getting to this

The ebb and flow of the tides on this particular island are prone to bringing in many things; driftwood, small sea creatures and today, it seems that a wanted super criminal with history's largest bounty on his head is also on the menu.

Washing up in the wet sand, his face just turned to the side as he struggles to cough the sea water from his lungs, he wearily manages to lift his head and look over his new surroundings. It was an island, it looked like. At the very least, he was on a beach... it was a nice beach, no wreckage or garbage like the spoiled landscapes he'd walked by from time to time. Actually, in most respects it was pretty nice. Another cough and a gout of sea water from his nose and mouth filled his lungs with air -clean air and oddly without a trace of seither in it.

[Well of course she's happy, she's happy anytime the magical best-things-ever of conquest and adventures and the ocean and swimming in the ocean (if you can call it swimming when a freak storm overtakes your totally awesome and gallant pirate ship of sweet infamy and leaves you, ahem, floundering there in the rolling water like a drowning, er, spider) cross wires. And oh, did they ever cross and wire.

Making the best of it is a particular talent of Aranea's, she thinks, flopping down in a tastefully bedraggled way onto the clean sand of, what, someone's planet? Their planet? She could know if she wanted to think about it hard enough, and she didn't want to at the moment. She wanted their ship back, it was not her idea to go "treasure huntin an cavortin" in the first place, anyway, and-

When you live the life of an assistant to a university professor...well, you don't expect to end up face-mostly-down on a mercifully forgiving stretch of sand along a pebbled beach. He's soaking wet, half-drowned, and in no state to contemplate just how awful he'd feel if he could feel anything. Almost nothing in his recollection (once he's awake and can recollect, anyway) will match a bedraggled crawl through churning sandy waters and the resultant collapse at the receding tideline. Now he's just...lying there.

Option 2:

Every good gentleman puzzle-solver needs a break now and again. Luke's on just such a break - not too far from the nearest town, as most beaches are not, and taking in the smells of the water mixed in with the smells of a nearby fried-fish stand. Mmm. Yes, lunch is definitely in order as soon as possible.

Which would be "now" except he spots a still form on the beach ahead, and takes off at a run toward it.

[An unusual set of circumstances had led to this situation. Descole had heard that this island had a similar effect on airships as Kodh had; this seemed to warrant investigation, in case there was an active Azran site that they had overlooked. But things went horribly awry - embarrassingly so or Descole. And he had wound up washing up on this shore just several days earlier - with no sign of Raymond or the scuttled Bostonius.

Today brings something unexpected he sees someone else has washed up on shore - someone else who seems to have been separated from his own constant companion. The Triton boy.

Descole loomed dramatically over him, his cape billowing slightly in a summer breeze. Was Layton investigating the same lead? Or was this some coincidence, a new stroke of fate? Regardless, Descole saw no point in hiding himself, at least not beyond wearing his favored costume. Not when the boy could be helpful to him. And so he growled.]

Still, it wouldn't hurt to do a once-over before departing. Lara adjusted a dial on her GPS, letting it guide her back to the shoreline.

Her eyes widened when she saw a man lying face-down on his stomach. Without hesitating, she jogged over to where the body was, kneeling beside it. He looked young, wearing some sort of strange wetsuit. ]

Know what, Bones? It wasn't his fault. He wasn't even making googly eyes at the ship captain's daughter. Not after the first time he'd been warned off of it at least. And besides, the beach was pretty nice. Sure, they didn't have their uniforms or their communicators but--

"It's like a vacation." A vacation where they'd managed to accidentally give up all of their technology to people that were basically the equivalent to the Pirates of the Carribean, forced to walk the plank, and ended up on a (hopefully) abandoned beach kilometers from where the Enterprise would be looking for them.

And somehow, Jim managed to lose his shirt along the way.
