[ it had all happened so quickly. after eugene's... deception was revealed, rapunzel barely had any time to process any of it before she was suddenly whisking her away. rapunzel had been so sure, so certain that that would be it — the end of her adventure, the end of her beginning... back to being locked up away in that tower, never to see anything past its single window ever again.
but before she could even get the chance to be that dramatic about it, she had blinked, and rather than find herself trapped within stone walls, she was out — back into the kingdom's courtyard, being presented to the king and queen as — as what? their missing princess?
she took a breath. processed. eugene was gone. revealed to be nothing more than a conman. a liar. a thief. mother gothel was gone. turned in by the very men she'd hired. a liar. a thief. the men who had found her — their rewards were endless, their futures made.
there were parties. so many parties. so many faces she suddenly had to know, etiquette she suddenly had to learn, places she had to memorize... amidst it all, rapunzel had tried to take another breath, but there wasn't any time for that, not now that the princess were back. not now that the heir to the throne had returned.
this was a very different sort of adventure now. now... she had responsibilities. ]

of all the possibilities opened by the baskerville gate, the jury deems this most interesting: the castoff glen discarded as he should have been, once. thread by thread, the loose ends are tied off and -- oh, to the abyss with it, what does anyone else's fate matter? his master is lost and gil is dead and they're two aberrations abandoned in the sealed courtroom, left to madness and rot. isn't the rest irrelevant? there is no escape from their dimension, and this, perhaps, is the jury's own petty vengeance: these once-pawns past their control, boxed away in the darkness of a finished game at last.
there's gunpowder dusting his gloves and the sight of the checkered floor tires him. black and white and the taste of iron thick in his throat, and vincent is smiling and smiling. isn't that what this means, this particular gritting of muscle and blood and teeth? ]

[ he could have simply abandoned this vessel for another when it had become clear that its wounds were too great and time too short for it to be salvaged. that he had even been so careless as to take this kind of damage was something he would have deemed nigh unthinkable even moments ago, but -- somehow fujimoto has always had the unique ability to twist mephisto's existence into something he can barely recognize.
and that's why he's lying on the ground with fujimoto now, white clothes stained with dirt and blood that keeps spreading further across the fabric like watercolor on paper.
mephisto turns his head to look at him -- the only being he's ever considered a companion -- and halfheartedly feigns annoyance as he strains to keep his voice steady through ragged breathing. ]
Don't take too much satisfaction in this. Now you won't have anyone to get rid of all your dirty books.

Kazuki had died and hadn't Haruki had to deal with it? So he can be strong right now too; he had come back, after all, so it wasn't that bad in the end.
He just had to be patient and wait for Haruki to come back, since they were the Kings and Kazuki hadn't been the one to hurt him. He's no stranger to blood and gore even in real life, where he could nearly taste it with how the coppery smell clawed through his nose and down his throat, filling his lungs with every breath. Surrounded in it, having to look at people's guts spilling out or broken bones bright in the dark goop of congealing blood.
Even if he tells himself these things he can still feel the stinging in his eyes as he began to cry upon the mere sight of his best friend laying there all broken and sopped in his own blood, heard the catch in his voice and the nasally tone as he tries to be gentle, getting his hands under Haruki's shoulders to pull him close and keep him warm. He'd nearly tripped over his own feet as he shuffled over to him, both trying to be quick and trying to be quiet like he was visiting some hospital. ]
Haruki...? Hey, what happened?

It wouldn't matter if he died too. Just that he took John Watson with him when he did.
"Good aim, Doctor." He says, grinning. There's blood on his teeth. "Punctured the spleen, I think. Fuck if I know, you're the one with the anatomy education. Won't be walking out of here, that's for damn sure. Does that make you feel better, at all?" He offers, head rolling on his neck. "Are you a betting man? Which one of us do you reckon'll go out first?"

[Their relationship was a secret almost from the start. While it was generally regarded safe to bond with Mike, too many still saw such a relationship as odd, if not outright unnatural. For romance to be considered would make one a pariah, regardless of Mike learning at a capacity that eventually developed into what some would consider a soul. And while Mike loved all of those it was assigned to assist and protect, the evidence of one caring for it in return had made it feel. Complete. It would not allow M'Gann to come to harm do to its own whims.
And so their relationship bloomed and matured in secret. M'Gann was its world, and it would do anything to protect her. Which was why, when their base fell, when Mike could no longer provide sufficient support, it downloaded itself into its emergency body, grabbed M'Gann and ran. And kept running, trying to keep one step ahead even when M'Gann was tiring and Mike's ability to keep a reliable escape strategy began to fail.
And its failure was spectacular.
Assuming a cave was a safe place to run to, it inaccurately predicted it was part of a larger cave system, a place where the two could hide. When all possible avenues of escape proved useless, Mike began to lag, thinking up a new solution, when the soldiers so doggedly pursuing them caught up. Instead of running the risk of allowing M'Gann come to harm, the AI shielded her with its own body, being hit repeatedly with a hail of fire. It withstood the attack long enough to fulfill its last action before malfunction racked it's system, causing Mike to fall to the floor in a locked-up fit of spasms.]

[Time had flown by so quickly, seconds drained into minutes into hours, days, weeks and months. All of it faster than Anna had ever thought it would. In the darker times within the ranch it had been as if time stood at a stand still, fastened tight with the bonds of seemingly endless hours.
It's almost unfair that good times move as quickly as bad, the woman thought to herself with a labored, shallow breath.
And yet that was part of life, wasn't it. There couldn't be beauty without pain to reflect off of. And while the good times had moved too quick, they had also been just as wonderful as they had been speedy. It had all been time she shouldn't have rightfully had in the end.
A soft smile rose up on her lips as she sighed out, voice soft.]
