Months pass between each visit, but Matthew makes it a point to return to the Cair as often as possible, ostensibly to bring news of the lands that he so loyally watches over. Really, though, they're all just an excuse to find out how how much trouble he and Lucy can find themselves in before his time is up, and he must return to his life, and his duties.

Soon, he knows that he must take his leave, so any chance they can get to escape, to explore, to spend time underneath the bright blue sky, to enjoy each other's company. She's speaking, and it might seem as though he's paying attention, but really, all he is focused in on are her lips, and suddenly, he can't resist temptation any longer, and he raises a hand to cup her cheek, to turn her toward him more fully, and then he bends, pressing the gentlest of kisses to her lips - something he's been wanting to do for far too long now.

[ he wakes up in the cage again. the round glass room they built just for him; he should be flattered. they always put him in the cage after missions. they're afraid of after-effects. bruce doesn't blame them. he's afraid too. but he's lived his entire life afraid, and he's tired of it.

loki says he doesn't have to be afraid — says it while looking bruce in the eyes, whispers it in his ear while they're pretending to pay attention to the adults, laughs it when they're running from whatever new devastation they've created. murmurs it when bruce's skin ripples and loki runs a pale finger along the bulging veins, right before backing away to watch bruce turn. loki never puts any more room between them than he has to. bruce never thought he'd want that.

loki is bruce's first coherent thought, after reorientation and hunger. his phone's nearby, and he sends a text: ]
