It is true. Or, at least, true enough, which is the best kind of lie. Tell the truth, then stop before the truth runs out. Lessens the chance that her haptic tells will give her away.

The whole truth is that one of the witnesses to the murder that Joan and Sherlock are investigating has reached out to Joan. The young woman is afraid, and Sherlock's abrasive manner has alrrady spooked her. Joan promised that he wouldn't get involved unless absolutely necessary.

Hence the lie.

Pressure is when you have one shot to kill a major terrorist operative. Pressure is when your unit gets ambushed. Pressure is when you have to force yourself not to have a drink every day. Pressure is when you watch blood from a gunshot spatter from two rooftops away. Pressure is when you wake up with nightmares of the war and know you can't drink to make it stop. Pressure is when your father is arrested for treason. Pressure is when your security company is investigated for possible ties to terrorists. Pressure is when you have to protect the same person who just investigated you.

Colonel Sebastian Moran knows a great deal about pressure. Ever since he was twenty-three and finished with his degree, tired of the life of a spoiled aristocrat, he has lived in and for pressure. From the war to private contracting, from protecting diplomats to being the right hand of the Napoleon of Crime, from alcoholism to mourning. There has rarely been a a day since he left university that he hasn't felt pressure.

Which is probably why he can so calmly plate a meal worthy of at least a three-star restaurant and serve it to a man who is supposed to be dead. Who has been dead for years. Why his hand doesn't shake from nerves or from turning back to drink. That was a distinct fear for awhile, yes, but he treated it like any other threat. Squared off against it and walked away victorious. Which is what he will do here.

He will not be intimidated. He will not be shocked. He will be the perfect bodyguard and butler, doberman and labrador. He will be utterly put together. Like this isn't a shock, like this is just another day.
