The benefits of owning such a bun shop that's open late was that Rhys got to meet all sorts of characters.

Like the Mysterious Mister that comes in like clockwork for a few sweet pastries at odd hours, always looking a bit pinched and tired. The blond always offered a smile and small talk, just to ask how his day was. The other never really said a lot, a few vague details here and there. But it was enough to wait for the tea to steep.

On this particular night, it seemed Mysterious Mister was a little more weary than usual. Rhys set the tea mug and fresh bun on the counter for him with a smile. No one else was in for this evening, just the two of them for now.

...and you should've seen how big his eyes went, I'm sure if he'd caught me I'd still be digging my way out of all those rainbow eggs. Then again, frozen eggs are not the best to throw at anyone anyways.

It was over. Anvard had not fallen, and Rabadash would pose a threat no more. True, there would be repercussions to deal with-- and what had Aslan been thinking, turning the Calormene Prince into a donkey? The diplomatic woes that would pose gave her a headache already-- but she could let the tense ball of anxiety that had settled itself quite solidly in her chest unravel a little.

And, apparently, the full range of emotions-- the betrayal, the hurt, the shattered remnants of her affection for Rabadash-- could also unravel and make themselves fully known.

She finds herself a quiet corner, one where hopefully no one will see-- they're meant to be celebrating a victory, after all-- and lets herself grieve.

She should be letting him rest, she knows. His coronation tomorrow will be draining as it is; talking this late into the night likely won't help matters.

But it's the first time they've simply gotten to talk. The first time they've been able to sit and talk of everything and nothing under the sun. And she quite finds she likes talking to him.

It's what makes it easy, to finally ask the question that had been lingering in hers and likely her siblings' minds, "Do they-- tell specific tales, about us? Is there more they remember beyond the fact our reign was-- a good one?"

They don't often get lazy mornings. It's simply not something either of their schedules allow them to have on any regular basis. But sometimes they do, and when they do, they always make the most of it.

Her fingers trace absently along his chest, drawing idle circles against the skin. Her lips press against his collarbone, a small smile gracing them.

She knows, of course, every inch of his body, but moments like these allow her to make sure that knowledge stays current.

[he dragged her into the party, after many promises of safety and the like, almost unwillingly. it's nothing formal, just a couple of the soldiers celebrating the end of the year. they're allowed to bring partners, and erwin had politely pleaded her to come, and assured her she didn't have to wear a dress or anything she wouldn't want to so long as she goes with him. his final bribery included good quality ham and assorted tea.

his fellow soldiers were nice to her; whether it's out of respect for erwin, or because she was just ridiculously formidable with the scowl on her face, is something else entirely. nevertheless alcohol flowed in the giant hall, some great music and singing was had, and erwin got to know various friends' partners and relatives. he made sure levi was marginally less uncomfortable around people, and that petra and oruo and hange especially don't devour her patience for the night. mike remarked that he smelled her scent faintly on him, a rare thing, and erwin laughed it off.

after a while, the lights are dimmed and the floor is opened for some slow dancing with partners, and erwin smiled, taking her hand with his own.]

Staring at the ceiling, twitching and turning over, sighing in quiet exasperation - being Eren, he probably thinks he's being quiet and subtle, but quiet and subtle isn't exactly his forte.
