The boundlessness and daring unchained nature of the sea captured the attention of writers and historians and adventurers for centuries; it still does! Exploration, conquest, commerce, and luxury all find roots in uncharted waters, be they ocean or large inland sea or freshwater lake and river. Along with those marks of growth come some consequences, born of nature and man: namely, several ways in which you might find yourself…

Not quite sure how you got here? There are a few starter options to consider:

1. Shipwreck: Did it go down in a storm? Lose a fight with pirates? Ignore the warnings of a competent lighthouse-keeper (or see no warnings at all due to a competent one)? Whatever the cause, your ship is lost and you survived, somehow. This applies to lakes and rivers, too, which can be just as tempestuous with a bit more potential for settled, "modern" life springing up around them.

2. Vacation Misfortune: Surfing lesson or session gone wrong? Lose your kayak and your paddle? Not quite the island tour/lakeside town fishing expedition/flight across the sea you expected? Jumping from tall seaside cliffs doesn't always have an easy ending, either. Maybe you were caught in a riptide and managed to get through it, but you definitely aren't where you started...

3. Lost at Sea: Can coincide with a shipwreck, but you might also be an intrepid explorer seeking new and uncharted islands, or someone on the run from an overbearing family or one too many failed assignments. Or you just plain can't read a map and work a sextant at the same time, and your compass doesn't point north.

4. Walk the Plank: Of course, for the less ethically inclined there is always piracy in its various forms. A prisoner or a renegade acting for his own benefit can be forced off the ship into the sea and whatever awaits him there; a stowaway or thief aboard could meet a similar fate.

5. Crossing Lines: Speaking of the criminal realm, if you run afoul of the wrong crowd in a port city, or you are the wrong crowd and you screw up one time too many, there's no law in that lawless profession saying they can't truss you up and toss you off the nearest dock. Hopefully you find some benevolent help after that.

6. Too Close to Land: What if the water is your natural home? Drawing too close to the shallows leaves you subject to crashing waves and sandburn, among other things; stay for too long as the tide ebbs, and you might get beached. Weather is probably a factor for you, too, as the hot sun and changing tide leave you dry quickly, or a storm rolling in makes the surf churn and pull.


It doesn't have to be one of these! There are near-countless variations on how and why and with what means one ends up washed up on the beach (unconscious, or drifting in on a makeshift raft, or swimming for shore, or looking for new discoveries - or any combination thereof), all of which include just a bit of suspension of disbelief. Maybe it's tropical; maybe it's frigid. Be bold. Be creative. AU stuff, one person in another's canon stuff, completely unrelated but you think it would be cool to play this out stuff: everything goes.


Setting up your initial post with some kind of scene suggestion is recommended, but not required.


Tag other people. Become the rescuer, actively seeking to assist after an accident or rumor you heard, or a fellow survivor/explorer, or someone taking their beachcombing find captive (alone or as part of a larger collective), or someone sent to fetch the missing person for straightforward or nefarious purposes. You don't even need to be the person making the discovery! Maybe you're introducing the washed-up victim to life in his or her new environment instead, a walk about town or a lesson in how to do the hard labor required of such vagrants. This isn't an explicitly smut or violence-ish meme but it could happen, so please take note and warn or describe permissions accordingly.

[ it's cool that his friends just think that water calms him down, is his security blanket. it's probably better that way. though he has to wonder if they notice he's gone... a lot. they probably just think he's at his house but really that's just a laugh. after all, his own, real, home is the ocean. the sea. not the wood.

[Chell has decided she likes this beach. It's quiet and not very popular with the locals, and it's a good place to go when she needs to get away from everyone. Which is perhaps more frequent than she likes, but it does mean she's familiar with what it's usually like.]

[And what this beach is usually like does not involve a giant dark blue and red machine lying on it.]

[Chell isn't sure if she should turn back or try figuring out what it is and why it's there. But asides from being a machine it doesn't really remind her of Aperture, so curiosity stays her feet.]

[It's almost peaceful when his emergency pod finally decides to open; a warm sun high in the sky causing him to squint, along with the soothing sound of waves gently hitting a shore. Correction. Almost peaceful had it not been for Raleigh's body tensing up on him, hands balling into fists at his sides and the events prior rushing back in a painful way.

The Kaiju was big. Category V big. It was a four Jaegar team mission and the damn thing still mopped the floor with them, took down two Jaegars before they could even land a good hit. All Raleigh could remember in those final moments was Stacker yelling at him and the others over the comms and taking a pretty serious beating before the fight was taken to the sea.

It was all over then. The kaiju slaughtered the third jaegar before dragging Chuck and Raleigh under, pulling them deeper and deeper as it tore their Jaegar apart, meaning to drown them. Their systems went haywire and they lost all communications with the Shatterdome when they got too low.

It was Knifehead all over again and rather than the fear making him curl up in the fetal position, Raleigh acted. He couldn't lose someone else. Chuck was the first to be ejected to safety with Raleigh's help who promised he'd follow him up. And then there was just this... A sunny and peaceful beach.

Raleigh jerks upright when his body finally allows it - the trauma after losing his brother doing a number on him - and scans his surroundings. Sand, sand, water...a lot of water, sand, sand and more sand. There is a lush green forest behind him but he pays it no mind as he leaps out the pod and on the shore, searching in a panic for what should have been a second. He seizes up, losing his breath and collapses to his knees, the life almost literally draining from his body. His heart aches and his vision starts to spin.

It's happened again. First his brother, those six other pilots, now this--

Something in the water catches his unreliable gaze though, something reflecting the sun's glare. Raleigh almost ignores it until he squints and shields his eyes with a hand... It takes less than a minute to get out his drivesuit armor and setting off into the water. He couldn't risk sinking before making it to Chuck's eject pod.

The swim takes awhile, exhausts him, but he pushes himself and when he finally reached the floating pod, he collapsed on top of it. Raleigh doesn't even bother reading the vitals on the front, just pulls the latch and tries to call Chuck's name only for nothing to come. His throat had swollen up on him and he shakes Chuck instead, tapping the side of his face repeatedly to wake him.]

They come by sea on the black winds of a storm. The fleet is vast--vast enough to hold their entire nation, after all, small though it is. He's fairly certain it must blot out the line of the horizon.

The problem is that they also come with an actual storm. The fleet stands in deep waters, waiting for the choppiness to abet so they can sail closer to the shoals. The ships are holding fine, well-built and study despite the battering of the sea. It's the people he worries after.

It's the children, for example. The little ones who scurry and try not to get stuck aboveboard too long while not losing track of their parents. They don't know how to move on the ship. They don't always have their footing in the storm.

Caspian is unarmed when he dives over after one such child. His armour is stripped from his shoulders as he throws himself into the waves to drag the boy back to the surface. The child's hands are firmly molded around the rope running back to the ship. His own--

--slip.

The undertow is strong. The battering of waves and wind and the rocks he's finally hurled against are painful. Dragging himself to shore leaves him in a barely conscious mess. Unarmed. Unguarded.

Undeniably a Telmarine soldier on Narnian shores.

It had not been one of his better landings. Long story short, the computer console had fried in his spaceship and Zunar had plummeted to Earth at an alarming speed. All anyone would have seen was a fireball crashing into the ocean.

A nice space of time later, the cat himself struggled out of the ocean. Bedraggled, half drowned, coughing up seawater. He collapses onto the sand, letting his eyes close in exhaustion. At least he was here...wherever here was.

The air up in the northern territories bites sharp this time of year, and the pebbles along the river's edge are slick even under the careful tread of boot heels. When he steps, it's quick and quiet, moving towards the figure lying near the water's edge where she washed up.

The deep red of her hair gave her away in the wilderness, that unnatural twist of color amidst the stone and grass in the scope of his gun. Certainly not the target he'd been after. He's probably better off leaving her where she lies. She'll come to on her own, even if she's injured. Natasha is a survivor if nothing else. But from this distance he can't tell what put her in the river to begin with. Truth be told he doesn't know what brought her out this way, or he might not be here at all.

Still. Can't turn his back now that he's seen her lying there on the rocks. He finds his way to her side and drops down to a knee with a soft grunt. His rifle slings up onto his back with practiced ease, and gloved fingers gently pull her damp hair away from her face, hoping to get a once-over in before she wakes.

If all is well, he vanishes back into the wilds. If she's breathing, he'll leave her be. Keeps things simple when they're anything but.
