Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...
22. ADDITION. Babies should be joyous things unless you're in a situation where you know you won't be able to care for them. Either you've adopted or found out you're pregnant.

     The words are almost disappointing to hear, not that Ventus knew what he would have expected. It's hardly enough to damper his spirits, although the subdued tone from his friend does make it come close.

     This isn't the way he'd imagined any of their reunions to be. There should be smiles and laughter. Maybe a hug and a ruffle of his hair.

     The corner of his lips quirks up in a smile that isn't quite sure it should be there, but it's too stubborn not to. The boy scratches the back of his head as he nods.

     "Yeah, I guess it has," he finally replies.

The fragility of Ven's smile hurts. He should always be carefree and happy, the way they used to be. The thought that maybe Terra isn't the only one finding those times unreachably distant cuts him to the bone.

He's never been good with words - but he doesn't need them, maybe. They're not all he has anymore. His body is his own again.

Terra holds out his arms for a hug. "Can I?"

It's the simplest gesture, but it's enough to spark that full smile back into place where it should be. Terra doesn't need to say or do anything further to prompt Ventus, the boy practically hopping forward with a little laugh. He throws his arms outward as he nearly launches himself at the older Keyblade wielder like an eager puppy.

Some things are easier to remember than others: Terra catches Ven automatically, holding him up off the ground in the hug. He should really put him down again...or not. Not is also good.

"I missed you," he says into Ven's hair. It's more lying-with-faint-truths; he's not sure there's any way to explain just how much he missed Ven, how that was left behind when everything else of Terra was gone.

     He doesn't mind so much. Wrapping his arms about Terra is solid proof enough that he's really there. Granted it's also a little like running into a firm mattress, but it's all right. He's not dreaming, right?

     "Me too," he says, somewhat muffled, but he can't quite move his head this way. It's fine. He can hear Terra's heartbeat, feel his warmth, just like he remembered it. Two parts of a trio. Why did they all go so far away from each other?

     "...where did you go?"

     He slowly tilts his head up as he asks this, blue eyes peering searchingly at the face of his friend.

...Terra can't. Can't look at him and say what he did, what he became. Ven not knowing is an unexpected gift, of sorts. He's the only one who still looks at Terra the way he did before. If Terra tells him, he'll lose that. Maybe he'll lose Ven entirely. (He should, he deserves to, he doesn't understand why anyone would want to see him now.)

So he...doesn't lie, exactly, but doesn't tell the full truth. "I - got lost," he says, not looking Ven quite in the eye. "For a long time."

     There's nothing Terra could ever say or do to make Ventus ever doubt his friend, that's what the boy holds in his heart. Things happened and changed, but there would always be things that remained the same.

     Still, it's hard to feel at ease when Terra avoids meeting his gaze. He's trying not to frown, but the concern is there in the slight furrow of his brow. It's not enough to disperse that smile, ever hopeful, ever optimistic.

     "...but you found your way back, didn't you?"

He knows Ven believes that. It's what makes the thought of telling him so unbearable: losing that faith he's never deserved. The whole story would break that trust. It would have to.

He meets Ven's eyes as best he can. His smile is kind of falling apart at the edges. "...Maybe."

     It isn't quite the look he's hoping for, but he can't possibly fathom what's happened to Terra that would make him react this way. Maybe he's better off not knowing...

     But then, does he really need to? It doesn't seem like his friend would want to talk about it anyway, and Ventus hardly wants to push him to it, especially if it seems to upset Terra.

     Shaking his head, Ventus pulls back a little so he can better look at the taller Keyblade wielder.

     "No maybes about it. You're here. It doesn't matter what happened, or how long it's taken. If something's wrong, we'll fix it. If we're apart, then we'll find each other again. That's how it's always been with us- with you, me, Aqua too."

"You're right," Terra says slowly. "You're right, Ven." For as long as they've been apart, they've still come back together. Not even - what happened - could keep them separated forever. Maybe that can be enough, at least for now.

His smile is much stronger now. "An unbreakable connection, right?"

Seeing Terra's smile even out, Ventus can easily find his own smile again to match. He nods.

"Exactly."
