the floriography meme

Flowers, in the Victorian Era (1837-1901), were often used as means of communication when people could not openly say things that we do these days. Think about someone who is naturally repressed; now imagine a whole society focusing on being repressed. You can see why lovers needed some sort of secret code. Poor things.

No longer used much, there are some remaining, well-known meanings—roses inspiring passion and love are a classic example. So, grab a bouquet and give it to someone special. Beware of what certain flowers could say, though. Not all flowers were used happily.

note: some prompts might cause triggers; be aware and specify in your comments

oo1. comment with your characters
make sure to put names, series, & preferences somewhere!
oo2. reply to others in character
oo3. go to RNG and roll 1-20
oo4. play out what happens! anything goes!
oo5. profit? profit!
oo6. originally from here

p r o m p t s
oo1. begonia beware
A hidden message is always appreciated. You need to keep an eye out, because your best friend might be banging your girl, or your girl is trying to off you!

oo2. chrysanthemum you’re a wonderful friend
Commonly used for funerals, this flower can also be used to send a gentle message. Someone is interested in you, but you only see them as a friend. Sorry.

oo3. clover promise
Promises, promises. Sometimes you mean them, sometimes you break them. Today, you promised your lover the best day ever. But does it work out?

oo4. daffodil unrequited love
There is an old tale of how a youth fell in love with his reflection and drowned. This is the ultimate rejection: no sparing of feelings, no kind words. Crush their souls.

oo5. forget-me-not memories, don’t forget me
This well-known flower is often given to loved ones as parting gifts. Who knows how long you’ll be gone? Maybe for only a day, or forever and a lifetime.

oo6. hazel reconciliation
You and a former love have parted ways for one reason or another. Time has cooled your head, but not your heart, so maybe it’s time to rekindle that fire.

oo7. hyacinth sorrow, forgive me
This holiday does not bring happiness to everyone. Yes, you’re sad and alone this year—but what are you going to do about it? Hopefully not mope with ice cream.

oo8. marigold cruelty
Love doesn’t mean a thing to you. The people around you are all puppets, and you love playing with them in the meanest way possible. Have fun, you psychopath.

oo9. mistletoe kiss me
Pure and simple: give someone a kiss! Your lover, your little sister, a stranger from across the room, or go wild and give the whole town some love!

o10. orange blossoms wedding, marriage bliss
Oh yes, you’re doing it: having a wedding on one of the cheesiest days of the year! Bring your rice and gifts, a priest is waiting to unite two people in love.

o11. plum blossom beauty, longevity
It’s a long shot, but you gotta try it. Flattery and buttering people up is one of the best ways to get what you want… romance, a date, money, sex…

o12. poppy oblivion
It is never good to be oblivious, and it’s awful to not see that someone is in love with you. But sadly, you are. Or is the other person the clueless one?

o13. primrose can’t live without you
You need them. More than lust or financial stability, you cannot imagine a world where you are not with this other person. Who said anything about a healthy relationship?

o14. rose (dark red) mourning
You never broke up with them, you never forgot about them. This is true love separated—they’re dead and gone. But have you moved on?

o15. rose (red) i love you, confession
Today is the day to express love, and nothing is better than expressing a love not expressed before! So go on, confess those beautiful feelings!

o16. rose (white) secrecy and silence
Sometimes you have to keep secrets. Sometimes that secret is someone else. So, enjoy a midnight rendezvous or run away for a passionate day somewhere.

o17. rose (yellow) infidelity
You couldn’t help it, this other person was just too… something to resist. That’s right! You’re cheating on your public lover today, but do you care or not?

o18. saffron abuse
Not all love is happy. Sometimes the problems are worse than money or cheating. It’s not limited to physical abuse either: there’s emotional, verbal, psychological…

o19. sweet pea good-bye
This day can really suck sometimes. Not as bad as being dumped on Christmas, but all the same. Your special someone obviously doesn’t feel the same anymore.

o20. violets let’s take a chance
Go for it! Love is exciting, and you don’t have to stay in a rut. Date someone new, elope, or do something creative. In the end, be different from the norm this year!

[Poland can always expect Lithuania to turn him down. He always does at first, but Poland knows that with some prodding he can make Lithuania realize skipping would be better. Lithuania always comes around.]

I can see Italy any time and I want to go with you to this one cool restaurant I know here! [He notices how Lithuania can't seem to pick out a tie and even if he's slow on the uptake? No country actually likes these world meetings. Who would? This is easy.] It'll just be Romano getting all grumpy because he's Italy, too, and why doesn't anybody ever call him Italy? And then Germany will have to take over and that'll get Romano even angrier. Then America pipes in and then England comes in, telling him to mind his own business. Then France makes some comment that makes England get all irritated and then they fight. Then Russia makes some creepy statement like how he's probably into everybody's misery or something. We might get through like, one paper.

[You've gone to one world meeting then you've gone through them all. This is how they go and Poland hates them just as much as the next nation. It's a waste of time and Poland has to see nations he doesn't want to. Plus it's a crowded room. Why would he ever want to go?] But if we skip then I get to show you cool things and it'll be more quiet. [He leans in close to comment in a sing-song quality.] I'll pay for lunch!

[It's a small sacrifice to get away to have some fun with his best friend.]

[ poland paying for something, count him in.

But seriously, in the back of his mind, he does think about the pros. No Italy, no loudmouths, no wasted time. Plus he really can't choose between the green with subtle velvet stripes and the green one with subtle silk stripes. His life is really hard. ]

My boss will call, upset. [ Because that's always what happens when Poland makes him skip a meeting, trip, conference, etc. But there's hesitation and he's not actually saying no, is he? Lithuania turns around, dropping his arms and shoulders from holding up ties. ]

If we skip, then this is the last time for a while. [ Since this happens. A. Lot. ] But I really think we should go. It's only for today, right? It's not so bad...

[ Yes it is. Yes he would really love to skip. Please let them just skip, please make him. ]

[Poland takes the ties and sets them aside, grabbing Lithuania's hand to tug. Probably a little rougher than necessary, but he never does know when he's being rough. Maybe one day he'll learn. If Lithuania's lucky.]

You worked overtime for your boss like, all last month, right? Dude, you've earned this. You so deserve this break, don't you think? And isn't it just wasting time to go to that meeting when nothing's gonna happen? Come on! [He whines at the end there, pouting.] It'll be fun! And I'm paying so this is a reward. You work hard all the time.

[ Usually some things take a little more prodding. But this time...he's tired, he hates being here. And he can grow to rationalize spending this much cash on something that turned into a small vacation, then he would be pretty much okay with this.

It's not like he hasn't been screamed at by every boss he's ever had over some stupid crap Poland has pulled. ]

Okay, okay. [ His hand being roughly jerked. Right now he's slightly stoney, but before long he'll be Into it. That's how this goes, right? ] But if you say you're paying you better pay!

[ This will not stop him from bringing cash and the emergency credit card because he will not be stranded at an Italian restaurant with Poland who didn't bring his own wallet. Because this has happened before. Many times, you know it has. ]
paluszki: ((happy) stare at his thighs.)

[personal profile] paluszki 2014-01-15 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Guess who is forgetting his wallet? Poland is. Not on purpose because when he did promise to pay for something then he meant it. He's not that dishonest. No, this is just his forgetfulness coming into play. Wallet completely forgotten and near his bedside, Poland practically bounces his way to the door as he waits for Lithuania to get a move on.]

I'll pay! Want to go shopping, too? We should make this day super good for us. It's not like we get to go to places like this for vacation a lot, right? [Their vacations usually aren't too thrilling considering they spend so much money on going to places like this for work. It's a little sad when your work trips are more exotic than your vacations, but alas. The life of a nation.]

[ Maybe it's subconscious or something because he's a masochist and likes to clear out his account for Poland constantly, but he doesn't even notice. ]

Fine, fine. If we're skipping, we have to make it good, right? [ Is he overdressed for shopping and food? That's not his area of expertise. He's forgotten the tie, though. He probably needs a jacket, right... ] I don't know if I converted enough litas for anything too extravagant though.

[ The emergency card will probably have to be used. A lot. ]
paluszki: ((smile) the cat eats are for confidence)

[personal profile] paluszki 2014-01-29 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay because you're not good with extravagant anyway. [Simply said and told without much thought because that's just Lithuania. He's simple and plain, but that's okay. That's who he is and how Poland likes him even though he does wish Lithuania would loosen up a little sometimes. It'd do them both a world of good.]

I'll buy you a tie or something. You always need those, right? [It seems like a responsible gift.]

I just mean that if you see something you want, don't hold your breath. [ He is a man on a budget!!! Even though that goes to hell, all the time. ]

But, uhm...that's fine. [ he says as he brought 20 of the same tie with him. ] You don't have to buy me anything, though. But if you really want to...

[ He trails off, as he pulls out his phone, fiddling with it. He suddenly starts again. ] I should probably call someone, just in case there's any worry or people start to wonder or anything. Or in case there's an emergency.

[ He begins to dial someone, he's too work conscious to be comfortable with this. Happens every time. ]

[Poland practically dashes forward, grabbing the phone from him in a terrified squawk.] Dude, don't you know the first thing about skipping? Which you should because I make you do it enough! [He sounds completely offended right now as he crosses his arms, pinning Lithuania with a stern look. For shame.]

If you tell anybody then they'll tell someone and then before we know it, we're getting lectured about needing to go to this meeting! That's like, the most obvious thing. If there's an emergency then we call, duh. But they have our numbers, Liet. They can call us.
sakotis: (( nervous ) 011)

[ He is simply too responsible for these shenanigans! Lithuania groans. ]

If there's a search party or a fire or-- or anything, then you'll be the one who gets to take the blame...just please give me back my phone?

[ Extending a palm, very nicely. If you give it back, you can enjoy him looking at it every two minutes for about an hour or so. ] Give it back and we can leave as soon as you want!
paluszki: pixiv member 60590 ((omgwtf) you're looking cute.)

[personal profile] paluszki 2014-01-29 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[He eyes Lithuania suspiciously. Can he trust him with the phone back or will Lithuania try to call again? Well, he has been friends with Lithuania for so long that he should give him the chance. Handing him the phone, Poland waves off the concerns as he goes to leave and expecting Lithuania to just follow along.]

Like, as big and important as I am I totally doubt there will be a search party. [But then he stops, thinking it over.] Or will there? Wow, what if they're throwing me a party or something?
sakotis: (( timid ) 199)

[personal profile] sakotis 2014-02-18 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's not your birthday. I doubt it. [ He can't think of a lot of reasons they should throw Poland a party, oops.

Looking at his phone. No texts and no calls so far. ]
And I think they'd me if there was a party for you.

[ That's not true because he's a like a sieve when it comes to talking to Poland about 98% of anything. ]
paluszki: pixiv user 462445 ((irritated) let me tell you something.)

[personal profile] paluszki 2014-03-01 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
[He looks to Lithuania, hands on his hips as he frowns.] Why wouldn't someone throw a party for me just because? You should throw me more parties. Parties to celebrate how totally great I am. [Which really is a thing to celebrate.]
