They'd made definite progress, since Moritz had unsuccessfully tried to get them divine intervention. The elven armies weren't necessarily much smaller - though there'd been much fighting - nor were the devil's numbers pared down enough to be a game-changer, but what they'd gained in the meantime was a plan. They'd started up an underground resistance force (nicknamed the 'Petunia Guard', for the flowers that followers displayed in their house windows as a sign to others) that had grown in numbers. It spread throughout the town of Berdusk and a few of its outliers, a quiet whisper of hope throughout the streets. Those of them capable of infiltrating castles silently or by impersonating others were getting ready for coup at the castle of Lord Malenar, and things had been going surprisingly smoothly...

Then that cleric had shown back up. Lee didn't know him well, personally, but then everyone had been a stranger to her before this. She'd made the decision to leave her monastery to explore the world not three months before this entire fiasco had started and she'd gotten roped into it.

Now they were all them crowded into 'The Inn', the ex-Two Headed Dog pub and rest stop whose owners had met their fates at the hands of the devils. It had been made into a makeshift headquarters, all the windows blackened and boarded up, the door full of scrapes from where they stacked excess furniture at night. Protective spellwork hung heavy in the air at all times, especially when the sun went down and the devil's curfew began. Til then, they only contended with elves - once dusk hit, and until dawn crept back in, the devils flew and crawled and bellowed their ways through the streets. Their little base was protected, ironically, by the devil's own lawful code - they were safe without breaking the laws, and living communally broke none of them. Keeping everything a secret was a constant problem, though.

And sometimes, just finding enough to do became an issue. It's midday, about a week after Moritz returned - returned with a stranger, which was fine. A stranger from another world - that had caused a little stir. Lee had heard the ripples of it, and watched from afar, as the newcomer had been welcomed into their crowded multi-floored cavern that never had enough beds or waterskins for the group living there. They'd even been introduced, briefly, and Neph had reminded her - in the spare few minutes they'd spoken to each other - of Alastair. The man she reluctantly now had as a constant companion was full of trickery and deceit alongside his many helpful assets, and it had sent Lee on-edge about Neph even though she'd never consider herself a good instinctive judge of character. She just recognized the type of excitable friendliness and, perhaps, the way she surveyed the room, looking for either exits or purses.

She hadn't bothered bringing it up to Alastair, of course, because the best case scenario was that he'd try to recruit Neph into stealing elven purses with him during the day, which, really...might be helpful... No. No, she's not going down that road. But what to have her do, could she even help them?

Could she be trusted? Lee hasn't seen her risk her neck for anyone else so far.

It's these thoughts - and perhaps just the general displeasure of being cooped up, helpless, for so many weeks - that has Lee frowning over in Neph's direction that afternoon. She shifts, plays with the sleeves of her robes. The yellow's just as bright as before, but it's slowly being covered in a layer of sawdust and grime. There's a couple drops of blood at the left sleeve and shoulder that Lee tries to ignore. She sighs, too bored for meditation, too excitable for a walk where she can reliably say she won't start a one-man fight against the elves who walk around as 'caretakers' during the day.

Her eyes on Neph narrow and just like that, her mind's made up. "Hey," she starts, standing abruptly and walking over the paladin draped across the bottom of the stairs, whittling. "Neph." She sees you, Neph, over by the 'bartop', now used as a workbench by anyone with the skills to use it. It's just as often used as a coffee table, to be fair.

Sleeping on floors, skipping meals, skipping even more baths...it's just like being fifteen again. On the upside, there's less chance of anyone here trying to roll her in her sleep, making off with her meager belongings or reporting her to the authorities, so that's a definite improvement on homelessness back in the ol' USA. Neph's determined not to complain (out loud, anyway), aware that she's here on Moritz's word alone, that she has things to prove. It's just, she'd've been perfectly happy never going hungry again, if she could've avoided it. Some things don't come as easy as they had when she was starting out back at home...it's only been four years since she used to sleep under staircases, but now when she does it she it she swears she can feel every scar, healed bone and bruised muscle she's had since then.

People have been kind enough, if somewhat bemused about her. Mostly she gets the impression that she doesn't fit when held up against their existing templates. Folks in general around here seem to have pretty specific skill sets. Like, if someone introduces themselves as a paladin or a bard, the resistance leaders know exactly where they'll be able to do the most good. Neph says 'Allomancer' and gets blank stares. She could explain, and she's sure they'd be happy to find something more useful for her to do, but there's been no time. The guys making those decisions are running 'round the clock, and Neph still doesn't have a good enough grasp on what needs doing to take her own initiative. The risks of butting in where she's not needed or wanted, or of screwing up something that might be basic to a native, are too high. The dry rustling of devil wings serves as a nightly reminder of that.

She's spent most of her time keeping the Inn in repair, patching leaks, boarding up doors, coaxing stubborn nails from warped wood. In the last couple days she's been put on supply runs, gathering up donations from Petunia Guard supporters, trading news around, keeping her ear to the ground in the process. The way people gossip and the things they choose to fixate on have proven to be pretty universal. She feels fairly confident about picking out the things that aren't being said, even if the significance is still lost on her most of the time.

On one of those runs, she made the acquaintance of a blacksmith willing to whip up her specific alloys. He'd been confused and a little irritated by her anxious insistence on the ratios, but happy enough to accept the fat purse she'd cut from a passing elven underling (Her first take, unauthorized but useful for gaining experience. It turned out people here still tied their purses and wallets in place, and no piddly cloth or silk or leather thong could stand up to her glass knives). Each ingot is about the size and width of her palm, all lined up on the bar before her now. She rasps away at them with a file the blacksmith had thrown in, collecting dull little piles of flakes on a chamois. Her vials and knives sit by her elbow, waiting to be filled, examined for nicks and tucked away.

Neph doesn't register the "Hey," at first. Calls like that aren't usually directed at her, unless she's being lumped in with a nearby group. People are friendly, but she's had to take it on herself to start most of the conversations she's had since she arrived. Not that she blames them; how do you talk to an alien, right? But then--"Neph."

Blinking, she looks up from her file and block of steel. It's a woman's voice, but it still takes her a second to attach it to the approaching monk. She hasn't chatted with Lee much although, ironically, hers has been one of the easiest names to remember in a sea of new people and faces. When they'd been introduced, she'd thought Oh, that's kind of what you'd figure a person who looks like her to be called back on Earth, too. Weird! before she'd been flooded with horror. It's never fun to realize she's got some latent racism, or racial stereotyping or whatever, floating around in her own head.

Anyway, not a hard name to remember, is the point.

"Oh, Lee, hi!" She sets the ingot and the tool down gently, careful not to send the fine metal flakes puffing away. "'Sup?"
