[ she was there when it happened. or at least she thinks that was the start of it but clare could easily be wrong. nate's always been a tough read at best, and throw the hustle and bustle of HQ in the mix and it's hard to parse out the odd behavior from the steely russian shtick ( coulson's words, not hers. ) twenty minutes, forty automatic rounds and three broken necks later the widowmaker is making off to god knows where, defecting like so many people swore up and down he'd do from day one.

when she gets him back—she will get him back—she's going to punch him for proving maria hill right.

he leaves a trail. coulson and the others pat themselves on the back, call this easy mode since their longtime agent seems keen on knocking out one of the enemies on their list and isn't bothering to change his methods to throw off his old partner. except clare knows nathan, knew him back when the russian accent still slipped when he didn't think anyone was listening and before his semi-robotic equivalent of trust kicked in. this doesn't match up. it doesn't make sense. but clare refuses to let him out of her sights and continues her pursuit from a safe distance.

it's outside a compound in tokyo when they're finally face to face. hill's voice is coming in as a choppy put him down in her ear, bow held taunt, a red dot painting the front of nathan's tactical suit over the sternum. just like old times.
